Redskins OTAs Start Today

The Redskins will begin the third, final and most intense part of the off-season program Monday with the first of 10 voluntary organized team activities.

It’s the first time this off-season team drills are permitted under the collective bargaining agreement. That gives coaches the opportunity to install the team’s offensive and defensive systems on the field.

It’s also the first time the Redskins can require players to wear helmets. Live contact is prohibited, though, and no shells or pads are permitted.

During the last five weeks, players have participated in a strength and conditioning program, had meetings with coaches and performed individual position drills and offense- or defense-only drills.

“We’re going against the defense now, and those guys will be doing the things they usually do, so I’m really excited,” said fullback Eric Kettani, who spent last season on the practice squad and hopes to make the 53-man roster this season.

“Everyone’s optimistic and has confidence from last year, but we know each year’s a different year, and each team in the division is changing around,” center Will Montgomery said. “They’ve had changes, we’ve had a few changes. Last season doesn’t mean we’re going to have a good year this year. We have to go back to the grind and work for each victory.”

All 10 of the Redskins OTAs are closed to the public, here are the dates for those activities; May 20, May 22-23, May 28-30, and June 3-6; are closed to the public.

Quarterback Robert Griffin III this Thursday is scheduled to address reporters in an organized setting for the first time on team property since he suffered his severe right knee injury in January. Griffin is expected to be ready for the Redskins’ regular-season opener on September 9th.

Washington’s mandatory mini-camp is scheduled for June 10-13 and is also closed to the public.

Redskins Sign top Draft Pick David Amerson

940x Redskins Sign top Draft Pick David AmersonThe Washington Redskins announced Friday that they have signed 2013 second-round draft pick cornerback David Amerson (51st overall).

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Amerson (6-1, 205) started 35 of the 39 career games in which he played at NC State, amassing 169 tackles (131 solo), 18 interceptions and three interception returns for touchdowns.

His 18 career interceptions are the most in school history and are tied for the third-most in ACC history.

As a junior last season, Amerson started all 13 games for the Wolfpack, earning second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors after leading the conference in interceptions for the second straight year.

A year earlier as a sophomore, Amerson led the nation with 13 interceptions, setting ACC and NC State records in the process.

That season, he was named the winner of the Jack Tatum Award, given annually to the nation’s top defensive back.

Amerson, 21, was born on Dec. 8, 1991 and he attended Dudley High School in Greensboro, NC, where he was ranked the number 19 safety in the country by Rivals.com.

FedEx Field Will be Installing OSU Developed Turfgrass ‘Latitude 36′

310R9347StadiumFedExFieldInside 150x150 FedEx Field Will be Installing OSU Developed Turfgrass Latitude 36When the Washington Redskins open their home season this fall, they will do so on a new playing surface sodded with an award-winning turf of bermudagrass created by researchers at Oklahoma State University. The team announced in April it will install OSU’s Latitude 36 at FedEx Field in June.

As many will remember, the last time we saw the turf at FedEx Field it was in extreme need of a redo.

“The NFL is the ultimate for any football player so we are delighted that a bermudagrass created by OSU experts has reached this pinnacle of success,” said OSU President Burns Hargis. “The NFL also is the ultimate test of a turf’s durability and we’re confident the Washington Redskins will be pleased with the performance of Latitude 36.” FedEx Field becomes the first NFL field to showcase Latitude 36.

The Baltimore Ravens also have installed the new variety on two practice fields, and the University of Virginia and Bradley University home football fields are sodded with Latitude 36 as well. The grass is ideal for use in parts of the eastern, western and southern United States for sports fields, golf course fairways/tee boxes, commercial grounds and residential lawns, in part, because of its excellent tolerance for traffic and recuperation rate once it is damaged. It has improved cold hardiness and excellent color, texture, density and uniformity.

Redskins to Make Slight Change to Away Jerseys

rg3 Redskins to Make Slight Change to Away JerseysAnyone who absolutely hated the two-toned collar on the white road jerseys from last year will be happy to hear that the Redskins are doing away with the burgundy, and using only white on the collars next season.

The two-toned collar look was part of Nike’s stock design from last year and as expected, changes are coming for many other teams around the league as well.

There is a possibility of an alternate jersey being used by the Redskins next year…stay tuned.

DeAngelo Hall Happy to Take pay cut for Chance to win

dhall 300x187 DeAngelo Hall Happy to Take pay cut for Chance to winWashington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall was on NFL Total Access on Tuesday and was asked about re-signing with the team for less money.

“For me, this time around, it wasn’t about the money,” he said “We started something here in Washington with coach (Mike) Shanahan and that was the biggest thing I wanted to stress. I felt like my contract along with (Albert) Haynesworth were the reasons we were in the situation we were in. So for me, it wasn’t about the money.”

Hall said he’s made plenty of money in his career, including $8 million to play eight games for Oakland in 2008.

“I wanted to come back here,” Hall said. “I wanted to finish something I started. I grew up in Virginia Beach area. I’m a local l kid, went to Virginia Tech. I want to be a part of this football team. I’ve been a part of it when we weren’t so good. So to finally be on the cusp of being great, I want to be a part of that. I was willing to take a pay cut and get back on this football team to help us win.”

Hall said he hopes RG3 will be ready, but if he’s not the team has faith in backup Kirk Cousins to lead them to the playoffs.

“If (Griffin’s) ready to go, we’re all for it,” Hall said. “We can’t wait to have him out there. But if he’s not, like I said, we feel great having Kirk out there, whoever else we put out there in different schemes and all that to win football games.”

Redskins Sign Draft Picks Brandon Jenkins & Bacarri Rambo

The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed 2013 fifth-round draft pick linebacker Brandon Jenkins (162nd overall) and sixth-round pick safety Bacarri (buh-CAR-ee) Rambo (191st overall). In addition, the team announced that it has waived wide receiver Jason Thompson.

Jenkins (6-5, 251) played in 40 games with 28 starts at Florida State from 2009-12. In his time as a Seminole, he recorded 119 tackles (81 solo) and exited the program ranking ninth in school history for career sacks (22.5).

Jenkins, 23, was a preseason All-ACC selection before missing the majority of the 2012 season with an injury. Rambo (6-0, 215) played in 47 games with 36 starts at Georgia from 2009-12. He exited the program tied for school records in career interceptions (16) and career interceptions returned for touchdowns (three), ranking in the Top 10 all-time in SEC history in both categories.

Rambo, 22, had 73 tackles (47 solo) as a senior last season. He had three interceptions, one year removed from a junior season in which his eight interceptions were second-most in the Football Bowl Subdivision behind only NC State’s David Amerson, a fellow 2013 draft selection of the Redskins. Rambo’s four-year deal is worth $2.261 million, including a $101,672 bonus.
