Brian Orakpo: “I Would Love to be a Redskin for Life”

09000d5d81ad9ec5 gallery 600 214x300 Brian Orakpo: “I Would Love to be a Redskin for LifeIf Brian Orakpo has his way, he will not be wearing any other teams jersey except the Redskins.

“I would love to be a Redskin for life,” Orakpo said at the golf tournament he hosts yearly for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. “That’s my goal. Obviously, when I talked to Mr. Snyder, he said that’s his goal. Coach Shanahan said that’s his goal. As long as both sides take care of our business, it shouldn’t be a problem.”

He and the team have not discussed an extension in detail, Orakpo said Monday. That could have something to do with the season-ending torn left pectoral muscle he suffered in Week 2 last season. Orakpo said Monday he is fully recovered from that.

Orakpo also tore the same pectoral in the final game of the season in 2011, though each tear occurred in a different place on the muscle.

“It feels differently because I’m not having any aches, I’m not having any pains,” Orakpo said. “I’m not having any sort of discomfort once you’re post-injury or post-surgery, you know?

“A lot of times when you come back from injury you can have some setbacks. You can have some discomfort, but you try to play through it. This time around, it’s really been beneficial for me as far as not really feeling any pain, and it’s great so far.”

Orakpo would not rule out signing an extension before training camp.

“The coaches know what I mean to this organization,” he said, “and that shouldn’t be a problem once it’s all said and done.”

Bacarri Rambo Impresses Coaches at Rookie Camp

628x471 Bacarri Rambo Impresses Coaches at Rookie CampBacarri Rambo was drafted in the sixth round by the Washington Redskins after a solid career at Georgia that would have made most think he would be selected sooner.

A couple suspensions during his career with the Georgia, at least one for a failed drug test, likely caused the safety’s stock to slip.

“All that’s behind me,” Rambo said Sunday when the Redskins concluded their three-day rookie minicamp. “I’ve moved on from that. It helped me grow (into) the person I am today. I’m just a regular, cool guy. I feel like I built my trust up . I know I still got things I need to improve on . just to show them, ‘Hey he’s not that guy. He grew from that.’”

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Rambo aced a test to measure prospects’ dedication and work ethic. That and background checks and talks with the coaches at Georgia, including former Redskins linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti, convinced them that Rambo was worth a sixth round pick.

That’s the same round Shanahan drafted 1998 MVP Terrell Davis for Denver out of Georgia in 1995 and record-setting running back Alfred Morris for the Redskins last year.

“I know Coach Olivadotti had something to do with it, told ‘em what kind of player I was and about my true character,” Rambo said.

Shanahan was impressed with the skill set of Rambo and fellow rookie safety Phillip Thomas, Washington’s 4th round selection. There is a starting spot available in the secondary.

Tanard Jackson, who was supposed to start at free safety last year remains on an indefinite NFL substance abuse suspension until at least August 31st. Madieu Williams, who started last year, wasn’t re-signed after not having a very good year in 2012.

“Their ball skills were very evident over the last few days,” Shanahan said of Rambo and Thomas. “We do a lot of different things with our secondary. We put a lot of pressure on them mentally as well as physically. You’ve got be able to play both (strong and free safety). They’ve got the size and the athletic ability to play both positions.”

Rambo pleased the coaches with an interception on Sunday.

“I kind of knew the system because we run the same system at Georgia with Coach Olivadotti,” Rambo said. “I really learned a lot from him and it carried over. I just follow the scheme and do what the coaches ask me to do. Once you do that, it allows you to make plays, it allows you to play full-speed. It’s just natural once the ball’s there to go get it and make a play.”

Injuries Keep Jordan Reed & Chris Thompson out of Rookie Camp

Newly drafted players Jordan Reed and Chris Thompson both were held out of the Redskins rookie camp this weekend due to them still recovering from previous injuries.

Mike Shanahan had this to say about the two players and their injuries.

“Take a look at Thompson. It’s six months since he had the ACL [injury]. He’ll be full-go according to the doctors by the time we open camp. It’ll be right at eight months, which is great. He’s working out now. Doctors say the ACL is looking great. He’s working out right now. You can see him run. I’m very impressed. He’s a guy that we think can help us. He’s got big play capabilities and a guy that we had ranked very high. I believe if he didn’t have that injury, he would have been a first-round, second-round draft choice. That’s how we had him ranked. Hopefully he can get healthy”

“When you take a look at Reed, he had a little bit of a pull with a quad, a little bit of soreness in the knee because of the quad. We’ll see. We’re going to put him through a little bit of rehab and hopefully he’ll be able to go in a couple of weeks. We just don’t want to push him too hard because it’s a little bit sore right now. He hasn’t done anything in about two-and-a-half, three weeks. But our key is to get him them ready for the season and both guys will be, I think, more than ready.”

Hopefully they will both be ready to go by the time OTA’s start back up at the end of this month, the next OTA’s sessions will be held May 22-23.

Redskins Rookie Camp: Alfred Morris’s Brother Shawn Amongst Tryout Players

Redskins rookie camp was full of prospects this weekend looking to make a team that last year won the NFC East.

Amongst those in attendance was Shawn Morris. What’s so special about Shawn Morris you might ask?  Well he’s one of Redskins runningback Alfred Morris’s younger brothers.

The younger Morris was a tailback at Division III school,  Birmingham Southern, and was named First-Team All-SAA running back in 2012. Morris also made the SAA Academic Honor Roll and played in nine games, starting seven, rushed for 1,026 yards on 172 attempt and nine touchdowns. He tallied  five 100-yard rushing games and caught 13 passes for 193 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The 5-foot-8, 197-pound runningback had this to say at UAB’s Pro Day in March. “I’ve always been small and I’ve always excelled because I have the heart of a lion.”

When Coach Mike Shanahan was asked to compare the younger Morris to his brother he replied, “Same personality, for sure. I’m not sure they both run the same. But what a quality young man.”

Shanahan went on to say about players like Shawn Morris getting an opportunity, “What we do is have our scouts look at these players and if they think somebody has an attribute where it gives them a chance to make our football team, then we bring them in. We brought in, like I mentioned, I believe it was 47 guys and either a scout or a coach saw something that they thought they should be in our camp and have a chance to make our football team.”

David Amerson Looks Forward to Redskins Rookie Camp

david amerson 150x150 David Amerson Looks Forward to Redskins Rookie CampA week after hearing his name called during the second night of the NFL draft, cornerback David Amerson will get his first taste of pro football when the Washington Redskins’ draft picks and undrafted free agents take part in rookie minicamp.

Over the next three days, the players who reported to Redskins Park on Thursday will go through a series of classroom activities and five practices as they receive their introduction to Washington’s playbook.

“I’m excited to get there and just start familiarizing myself with the playbook and the place that I’m going to be for the next stage of my life,” Amerson said in a phone interview. “I don’t really know what to expect, to be honest with you. I know the defense is similar to what we did in college. They go after turnovers. I know DeAngelo Hall is a DB. I’ve always looked up to, and I’m really interested in working with him and learning from him.”

Amerson led the nation with 13 interceptions in 2011, and he added another five last season. He knows that the Redskins drafted him because of that playmaking ability and his impressive size (6 feet 1, 205 pounds) and speed (4.35-second 40-yard dash). He also knows that the level of competition just kicked up another notch and that he will have to spend hours studying opponents if he wants to duplicate his success from college.

But Amerson says he is up to the challenge.

“I wouldn’t say I feel too much pressure. Pressure is nothing new. I’ve been feeling it for a while now,” he said. “But I know they’re counting on me and some other guys to help them get better, and I’m looking forward to doing that. I’m a pretty quick learner. I pick things up quickly. I can learn whether it’s hand-to-hand or just watching on a board. . . . I’d rather be thrown to the fire. That’s the best way for me to learn.”

The Redskins are looking to use Amerson on the outside and sharing the field with Hall and fellow starter Josh Wilson, one of which would play nickelback and cover the opposing slot receiver.

“The first thing we want to do is see if he can play outside because that’s the toughest position to play,” Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said. “If you can find that guy, you are in pretty good shape. I think he can play nickel, but we are looking at him as an outside corner, and we’ll adjust some other players on the inside.”

“I definitely think Redskins fans should be excited about this draft class,” Amerson said. “We’re all looking forward to getting out there. It’s a lot of talent, and we’ll see what happens. But it’s definitely [one] they can be excited about.”

Joining the draft picks will be 12 undrafted free agents who signed contracts, including Utah center Tevita Stevens, Florida tackle Xavier Nixon, UAB inside linebacker Marvin Burdett and wide receivers Jason Thompson of New Haven, Nick Williams of Connecticut and Chip Reeves of Troy.

London Fletcher No. 86: NFL Top 100 Players of 2013 (Video)

The NFL annually does a ‘Top Players of’ list (voted on by the players) after each season as most people know. This years list is being shown on NFL Network the next couple of weeks and London Fletcher was listed at number 86.

Fletcher is the second Redskins player to be o the list so far, as Trent Williams ranked in at number 99.

The 5-10, 245 Fletcher is about to start his 16th NFL season, year number 15 was a gem by anyone’s standard.

All London Fletcher did was register 141 tackles, 78 unassisted, get 5 interceptions and make 3 sacks.

Fletcher was named the Pro Bowl as a alternate last year and continued to be the captain of the Redskins defense despite having major issues with his ankle and elbow, both of which required surgery after the season.

One could make a valid argument that London Fletcher should be much higher on this list.  Since the players vote on this list, I’m wondering what they were thinking when they penciled in Fletch that low.

There are sure to be more EVEN Redskins players on the list….stay tuned.

RG3: “People say DC’s my Town not Obama’s, I Don’t Look at it That way, But I can see What They’re Saying”

Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III (or RG3) is being featured in an upcoming ESPN “The Magazine” article written by J.R. Moehringer.

The interview, which is over 5000 words in length, details some of the moments of Griffin’s young life as well as his playing career.

The following are a collection of excerpts from the article:

- In the fall of 2009, just when Briles and the fans in Baylor Stadium were starting to dream big, Griffin went down. Anterior cruciate ligament. The whole Baylor community took it hard (overnight, the stadium was half-empty, Griffin says), but Griffin took it to heart. He personalized the injury, made it his fault. “I saw how many people I let down,” he says. “My head coach cried. My offensive coordinator cried. My offensive line coach cried.”

Then he saw, beneath their sorrow, a genuine concern for him. “Not even worried about the season — worried about me as a person & I saw that in their eyes.”

It broke his spirit. It lifted his heart. Until that moment, RG3 says, he’d never embraced football. He’d always played full speed, all out, but he’d never cherished the game, not until it was taken from him. “I didn’t love football before I tore my ACL. When I came back, I loved it.”

-  He insists that as last season wore on, he became more — you should forgive the word — conservative. Take Week 14, he says. He was leveled, laid out, by Baltimore’s Haloti Ngata, a behemoth descended from the Kingdom of Tonga who, that day, descended from the sky. The hit caused Griffin’s leg to fly straight up in the air, then whipsaw from side to side, like the needle on a lie detector.

“You’ll never see anyone get injured like that again,” Griffin says. “All 350 pounds of Ngata, all the massiveness that is Haloti Ngata, running at you full speed, and as I’m getting down he hits my leg.” Just a “freak” thing, he adds. He was trying to stop running, trying to slide. What more do people want? Everyone harasses Griffin to change his game, he says, “but what everyone doesn’t realize is — I did change my game.”

- Kirk Cousins, the Redskins’ talented backup, who relieved Griffin in the Baltimore game and again in the Seattle game, recalls eavesdropping on an intense sideline conference between Griffin and Shanahan: “Robert, you’re clearly limping, you’re not at full strength, do you think you need to come out? And I’m not quoting anybody, I’m just paraphrasing. And Robert’s attitude was: I’m okay. I understand there’s a limp, but I’m going to be okay. I brought us this far, I want to finish this thing.”

Cousins adds: “I think it was tough for Coach Shanahan to tell him no. And it was tough for Robert to back down. Both of them were in a tough spot, each guy’s word against the other.”

- “If I had another incident like the Ngata hit, I’m out of the game. You pull yourself out at that point. You learn from your mistakes.”

What about the Seahawks game? “I don’t feel like playing against the Seahawks was a mistake. But I see the mistake in it.”

Come again?

“With what happened and how everything was running — you take me out. If that happened again next year, I’d come out of the game and sit until I was 100 percent healthy.”

- When Griffin woke in the operating room, he once again saw his entire football family with tears in their eyes. The family members were different — Dan Snyder, Redskins owner; Bruce Allen, general manager; Tony Wyllie, head of public relations — but Griffin’s feeling of gratitude was the same. “It’s tough for professional athletes to trust anyone in this business,” he says. “When the owner of the team, the general manager of the team, the PR director of the team, they’re all there, that’s how you know: I can trust these guys.”

- “A lot of people have said DC’s my town, it’s not Obama’s town,” RG3 says. “Obama’s the second most popular person in the city. I don’t look at it that way. But I can see what they’re saying.”

- The hair, he says, began as a mild rebellion. His parents decreed that he couldn’t wear it long until he left their house, so he grew it out the minute he left. His sister braided it the first time; his mother braids it best. Now it’s his signature. He couldn’t cut it if he wanted to. He’d be the Felicity of football. “People associate me with braids,” he says. “It lets people with long hair say: Look, my long hair does not define me. Just because I have long hair and I’m African-American doesn’t mean I smoke weed.”
