Saturday Slop: D.Hall Looking For A Team-Win In Chicago; Will Kirk Cousins win the Backup QB Role?

hogs haven daily slop gfx medium Saturday Slop: D.Hall Looking For A Team Win In Chicago; Will Kirk Cousins win the Backup QB Role?

So as we head into preseason week 2 for the Redskins tonight, here is the weekend version of the ‘Daily Slop’, a collection of Redskins news from around the web…as seen daily over on Hogs Haven.

Redskins thoughts: Three things I learned | WashingtonExaminer.com
Aldrick Robinson is anxious for another chance to return punts. He attempted to return two last summer, but he had never done it in college and fumbled both his opportunities vs. Pittsburgh in the preseason. But Robinson worked a lot on catching punts while on the practice squad last season. He said he catches 10 punts a day now in practice (they rotate the returners). “Last preseason was kind of tough,” he said. “But I’ve learned how to catch the ball. I’m better at catching it and feel more comfortable. I’m way better than I was.”

RG3 Report: Aug. 17 | WashingtonExaminer.com
They liked what they saw. They know they need to see more. Not that Robert Griffin III’s teammates doubt what he can ultimately do, but they also know there’s a long ways to go. Griffin was poised and relaxed in the pocket in his preseason opener vs. Buffalo. However, quarterbacks succeed in the NFL based on their ability to handle duress as much as anything. “It’s hard to stay poised as a rookie when things aren’t going well,” backup QB Rex Grossman said. “He had a couple open guys, made the right throws on time [vs. Buffalo]. Looked good. I thought he looked great. I thought he handled every situation given to him.”

HomerMcFanboy ” lorenzo alexander isn’t very good at math
How much of an adjustment was it to fill in for London Fletcher as the quarterback of the defense? “Obviously it’s a huge adjustment because I’ve got to know all of the plays and know how to call it depending on how the offense comes out,” he said. “But it’s good. I just wanted to make sure I could hear everything they were saying to me and get used to hearing that. Especially with the crowd noise and everything, it’s a little bit harder because I’m not used to it. So I just wanted to make sure I got the call clearly so I could relay it to everyone so no one is panicking.”

Redskins 2nd Preseason Game: What I’ll Be Watching | Fanspeak Washington Redskins Blog
Again it’s not surprising that the most important part of the game I will be looking at is the play of Robert Griffin.  I was impressed with his first career action versus Buffalo last week and look for him to continue against a solid Bears starting defense even without Brian Urlacher.

Revisiting the Receiver Position Battle: | Fanspeak Washington Redskins Blog
As we head towards the 2nd preseason game I thought it would be a good time to take a deeper look at where the wide receiver position battle stand. Though there will obviously be an order for this group, the focus is on who is making the roster. That means I won’t be focusing on Pierre Garcon, Santana MossLeonard Hankerson and Josh Morgan, since they have their roster spots locked up. Also, I’m not going to really address any of the “camp bodies” at the position. Instead I’m focused on the guys who I think have a real chance to make it, and first up is the wide receiver battle.

We’ve got a young stud here today in Darrel Young, and I think we’re headed for a turnaround this year.  They’re gonna play great defense, be aggressive on offense, and I think we’re gonna win at least 10 football games.  How about you?  I think that Redskins fans are the best in the National Football League!”

Change We Can Be Proud Of

slider Change We Can Be Proud Of

The Washington Redskins have taken huge steps towards a valid rebuild in the last few weeks. The biggest and most obvious upgrade was at the quarterback position, where they not only added Robert Griffin III, but they also added a quality backup prospect when they drafted Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins in the 4th round of the draft. The Skins were then able to cut career backup quarterback John Beck, a player who in my opinion, had no business wearing the burgundy and gold to begin with.

The Redskins have also had a major shortage of yard producing wide receivers in previous years and added Josh Morgan and Pierre Garcon to the mix in free agency this off-season. Signing Garcon gives the Redskins a young, up and coming receiver who is no stranger to the YAC (Yards After Catch) that they desperately need to aid the offense in scoring more points. Morgan has been near the top of many discussions the last few years thinking the young Virginia born receiver was near a break out season, last year was a shortened one for him due to a ankle injury early on.

While the offensive line was nothing to write home about last season, injuries showed the world that not only was our 0-line painfully mediocre, it was also painfully thin with hardly no depth. To address the depth issue head on, a pair of guards were drafted in Josh LeRibeus from SMU and Adam Gettis from Iowa as well as tackle Tom Compton from South Dakota. LeRibeus has already been used at rookie camp in a center role, showing his versatility at multiple positions could lead  to him being used early and often.

All fans of the Redskins know that we have a strong front seven on the defensive side of the ball, though some could point out that the depth at the ILB position was very thin with only Lorenzo Alexander listed as a backup to London Fletcher and Perry Riley. The ‘Skins addressed that need by signing linebacker’s Jonathan Goff and Bryan Kehl, and then drafting Keenan Robinson from Texas with their second pick in the 4th round of the draft. Robinson has the skill set to be groomed as a possible replacement for Fletcher in a couple of seasons.

The secondary may present the biggest problem/question mark on the entire Redskins team. Since last season the ‘Skins have added Brandon Meriweather, Tanard Jackson, Madieu Williams, Cedric Griffin, Leigh Torrence and drafted Jordan Bernstine from Iowa and Richard Crawford from SMU. Not to mention the signing of former UVa star corner-back Chase Minnifield, who went un-drafted after being looked at as a third round pick before surgery in January. Minnifield could very well be the steal of the draft.

Last year was focused on fixing a problematic defense, this year it appears as if the main focus has been providing depth at key positions and upgrading at the major skill spots. Coach Mike Shanahan has already announced that RG3 will be the starter from day one (as if we needed to hear that to know it). Those who wanted change in DC…it is here, and I for one think it’s change we can be proud of!
