Super Bowl XXVI: Redskins vs Bills (Full Game)

About Minneapolis, Minnesota: Football fans in Minnesota were looking forward to hosting Super Bowl XXVI after their Vikings missed the playoffs and they would now get to see playoff football in the Metrodome. Residents prepared for months for the biggest sporting even of them all and fans from around the world would tune into watch the Washington Redskins take on the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVI in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Ticket Sales / Attendance:  There were 63130 people in attendance at the 26TH Superbowl game in Minneapolis and it is estimated that another 79.5 million more excited fans watched from home or other football parties around the world while tuning into CBS.

Team Pre-Season Stats:  After a heart breaking loss in last years Super Bowl, the Buffalo Bills were anxious to get back to the championship. With the same team still in tact, head coach Marv Levy would count on his veteran offence and defensive stars to lead the team through the year and back to the playoffs.

The Redskins were ready to begin the 1991-92 NFL season with QB Mark Rypien ready to lead them through the season and hopefully a long playoff run. Defensive back Darrell Green and company would also have to help the team from their side of the ball to ensure their success.

Team Roster: The Bills line up looked similar to the previous year including QB Jim Kelly, RB Thurman Thomas, WR Don Beebe, WR James Lofton, TE Pete Metzelaars, OL Bruce Smith, and OL Cornelius Bennett.

The Washington Redskins would start the season with QB Mark Rypien, RB Earnest Byner, WR Gary Clark, TE Terry Orr, DB Darrell Green and DL Charles Mann.

Game Highlights: The Redskins struggled early in the game scoring only 3 points on their first 3 possessions on a 34 yard field goal from Lohmiller. However, they managed to take 17-0 lead into halftime after a 10 yard touchdown reception by Earner Byner and a 1 yard TD run by Gerald Riggs. The Buffalo Bills would have to come back from a 17-0 lead with half of the game to play.

Gerald Riggs started the scoring early in the 3rd quarter with another touchdown run and increasing the Washington lead to 24-0. The touchdown came after an interception on a Jim Kelly pass on the first play of the second half. Buffalo responded with 10 points of their own, but Washington crushed any hope of a comeback with less than two minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter with a 30 touchdown reception by Gary Clark.

Buffalo would add 2 touchdowns in the 4th quarter, but it would not be enough and Washington would roll to a 37-34 victory. Buffalo would lose a second straight Super Bowl after Jim Kelly was intercepted 4 times. For Washington head coach Joe Gibbs it would be his 3rd Super Bowl victory.

Game MVP:  Washington Quarterback Mark Rypien would be named MVP of the 26th Super Bowl after a great performance in the game. He would complete 18 of 32 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns. His 35 yard pass to Gary Clark in the 3rd quarter would crush any chance of a Buffalo comeback and leading the Redskins to victory.

Half Time Show:  The halftime show was presented by Timberline with a theme of Winter Magic. There would be performances by pop star Gloria Estefan along with US Olympic Figure Skaters Brian Boitano and Dorothy Hamill.

Commercials:  The average cost of a 30 second commercial was $850000 during the game and there were several great commercials during the game. Some of these commercials included an Advil commercial with Nolan Ryan, Air Jordan from Nike, and of course Bud Bowl IV.

Redskins 10 For 80 Winners Announced

As most fans of the burgundy and gold already know, the Washington Redskins had their ‘Redskins 10 for 80′ contest for the fans to vote on exactly who they believed should be added to the all-time Redskins team. A few years back the first 70 were announced, but this year in honor of 80 years in existence, the team decided to add ten more players to the list.

The team announced the winners at the 51st annual Redskins Welcome Home Luncheon Friday. The new add-on’s to list include vital pieces in the Redskins front office during the Superbowl years in the 80′s and 90′s as well as all-time greats who were very deserving of the honor.

The following players were added to the list.

 

 

Clinton Portis - RB | 2004-10

A dynamic player and personality, Portis is the second-leading rusher in franchise history, and scored 49 touchdowns over seven seasons in Washington. He was elected to two Pro Bowls and was named second team All-Pro in 2008. He finished with 8,164 yards from scrimmage and 26 100-yard games.

 


Sean Taylor - S | 2004-07

A complete defensive player, Taylor was known as a hard-hitter and play-maker  He made the Pro Bowl in 2006 and 2007, and logged five interceptions in his last nine games.

 

 

LaVar Arrington - LB | 2000-05

A dynamic Redskins linebacker and second overall pick of the 2000 NFL Draft, Arrington earned three consecutive Pro Bowl berths from 2001-03. He had 22.5 sacks – including 11 in 2001 – in six seasons with the Redskins.

 

 

Roy Jefferson - WR | 1971-76

A three-time Pro Bowler with the Redskins, Jefferson caught 208 passes and 15 touchdowns in six seasons. Often a clutch receiver, he led the offense in receptions in 1971 and helped the team win the 1972 NFC Championship.

 

 

Richie Petitbon - S/ASSISTANT COACH | 1971-72, 1971-93

Petitbon finished his playing career in Washington and had nine takeaways on defense in 16 games. He later returned as a defensive coach, serving on all three Super Bowl winning staffs. He later relieved Joe Gibbs as the head coach and was inducted into the team’s Ring of Fame in 2011.

 

 

Bobby Beatherd - GENERAL MANAGER | 1978-89

Beathard was one of the chief architects of the Redskins’ championship teams of the 1980s. He drafted the likes of Art Monk, Darrell Green and Russ Grimm. The Redskins’ 1981 draft class is regarded as one of the greatest ever.


Chris Samuels - OT | 2000-09

Samuels was a six-time Pro Bowl left tackle during his ten years in Washington. He started 141 games protecting the blind side of Redskins quarterbacks, and was received the Ed Block Courage Award in 2002. He returned to the team in 2010 as a coaching intern for the offensive line.

Jon Jansen - OT | 1999-2008

A 1999 second-round draft pick, Jansen was mostly a “Rock” – his nickname – at right tackle, starting 123 games in his Redskins career. He helped block for two of the top rushing performances in franchise history (1999 Stephen Davis, 2005 Clinton Portis).

Joe Bugel - ASSISTANT COACH | 1981-89, 2004-09

A legendary offensive line coach, Bugel guided one of the greatest offensive lines in NFL history, instilling toughness every step of the way. He coined the nickname “The Hogs” for the likes of Russ Grimm, Joe Jacoby, Jeff Bostic, George Starke and Mark May, among others.

Terry Hermaling - OT | 1970-80

A tough-minded left tackle who joined the Redskins as an undrafted free agent, Hermeling would start 103 of 120 career games in 11 seasons in Washington. He helped the Redskins capture the 1972 NFC Championship.

Flashback Friday: Darrell Green

Darrell Ray Green was born in Houston, Texas on February 15, 1960. Little did the world, or the state of Texas know that such a great man and football player had been born that day. Green will long be remembered for many different reasons, but most will remember a little guy with the heart of a lion, who could run like a cheetah.  Taken with the last pick in the first round of the 1983 draft, Green may be the best draft pick the Washington Redskins ever made this side of Sammy Baugh.

Green had more moments than I can begin to mention without missing a few, so I figured I would share this video, and let it be today’s walk down memory lane!

On May 15, 1973, Redskins coach George Allen traded five players to the Houston Oilers for Ken Houston, a five-time Pro Bowler and one of the NFL’s premier safeties. Allen made a slew of trades in his coaching career, but this was one of his beauties.  Houston made seven more Pro Bowls and was All-Pro or All-NFC every year from 1973 to 1979.
