DeAngelo Hall Happy to Take pay cut for Chance to win

dhall 300x187 DeAngelo Hall Happy to Take pay cut for Chance to winWashington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall was on NFL Total Access on Tuesday and was asked about re-signing with the team for less money.

“For me, this time around, it wasn’t about the money,” he said “We started something here in Washington with coach (Mike) Shanahan and that was the biggest thing I wanted to stress. I felt like my contract along with (Albert) Haynesworth were the reasons we were in the situation we were in. So for me, it wasn’t about the money.”

Hall said he’s made plenty of money in his career, including $8 million to play eight games for Oakland in 2008.

“I wanted to come back here,” Hall said. “I wanted to finish something I started. I grew up in Virginia Beach area. I’m a local l kid, went to Virginia Tech. I want to be a part of this football team. I’ve been a part of it when we weren’t so good. So to finally be on the cusp of being great, I want to be a part of that. I was willing to take a pay cut and get back on this football team to help us win.”

Hall said he hopes RG3 will be ready, but if he’s not the team has faith in backup Kirk Cousins to lead them to the playoffs.

“If (Griffin’s) ready to go, we’re all for it,” Hall said. “We can’t wait to have him out there. But if he’s not, like I said, we feel great having Kirk out there, whoever else we put out there in different schemes and all that to win football games.”

Cap Penalty Could be Blessing in Disguise for Redskins

20121203 jla aq3 254.0 standard 709.0 150x150 Cap Penalty Could be Blessing in Disguise for RedskinsThis NFL off-season has been far from business as usual at Redskins Park. The Redskins have been cash strapped as it pertains to the NFL’s salary cap ever since they had to take a second 18 million dollar cap penalty. To make things tougher this year, the Redskins had several key free agents to re-sign and some contracts that were not very team friendly.

Instead of being hasty and restructuring already bad deals to free up money, the Redskins have been calm, cool and collective in their moves on new free agents as well as their own players. Moving on from the horrible deal DeAngelo Hall was signed to may have been the most important move of the year. Hall was set to make nearly 8 million in 2013 and now is signed to a much more affordable one year deal.

Gone are the days when the Redskins over-payed players who didn’t even fit the teams needs (similar to trying to put a square peg in a round hole). Mike Shanahan has made it a point to pursue players who are affordable and fit the needs the team has. There is still work to do to free up space for the rookies they will draft this year, but that may not be as hard as one might  think when you factor in the new “51 rule”.

The “51 rule” basically states that only the top 51 salaries count against the salary cap. For example, when a player who makes 1 million a year is signed, the player who has the 51st highest salary will fall off the list, thus freeing up money on the back-end. At this point running-back Alfred Morris does not count against next years cap since his salary is near the league minimum. The Redskins can get far enough under the cap to sign their draft picks by restructuring one or perhaps two deals on players who will be around for awhile.

The Redskins were able to bring back 21 of 22 starters (most in the NFL, they only lost Madieu Williams) from a team that won the NFC East last year, the only key player they lost was Lorenzo Alexander (special teams player). Obviously hurting for cap dollars has hindered the teams ability to fill needs, but the cap penalty that kept the Redskins from free spending could in fact be one of the biggest blessings in disguise the franchise has ever seen.

Our friends over at Over the Cap agree, they had this to say about the Redskins heading into the future:

In many ways I think that the cap penalty was a blessing in disguise for the Redskins. For years the Redskins have overspent on mediocre talent and this penalty kept them from doing just that this season. While they have spent more than I would have liked to see they do have 47 under contract in 2014 and only $106 million or thereabouts committed to the cap. Those are very reasonable numbers for a team whose QB will likely begin entering his real prime provided he is healthy.

That said the Skins have work to do if they want to sign their rookies as they are running right on the cap right now. I tend to think some will say that the Redskins will look to get RGIII more weapons in the passing game but the smarter move will be to improve their defense which can upgrade at multiple positions. The defense has 7 starters who are on their contract years and a number of key subs on their final year. Plus the defense is not that good to begin with. The Redskins relied too much on RGIII in 2012 and they need to balance that out somewhat by building a better defense. If the QB is healthy they can get by with some patchwork pieces for the time being as he looked so good last season he doesn’t need all great players around him and he already has the running game to rely on. The trade for RGIII depleted their draft reserves so using what hey have and not getting caught up in trading games again is the teams best chance for success.

The Redskins are moving in the right direction and next year they will have 34+ million in cap space to fill the needs the team will have moving into the future, and RGIII’s prime years.

D Hall Says he Turned Down More $ Elsewhere to Rejoin Redskins

tempDH8 nfl mezz 1280 1024 300x241 D Hall Says he Turned Down More $ Elsewhere to Rejoin Redskins

DeAngelo Hall joined LaVar Arrington on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, DC., earlier this week to discuss rejoining the Redskins.

He had the following to say.

On why he decided to return to the Redskins at a greatly reduced salary after being released earlier in the off-season:

“It was about being where I felt comfortable, a place where I felt like I could definitely succeed, and a place I felt like had a chance to win. I can remember a couple years ago when I took that deal and left Atlanta and went to Oakland, I kind of found out the hard way not all money is good money. If a team wants to pay you $7-8 million and you’re struggling to go to practice, you’re struggling to play in games, your heart’s not in it, that’s no way to play football. When I feel like I’m not having fun and my heart’s not in it, I’m gonna hang it up. I felt like Washington was a place that I definitely wanted to be a part of.”

On if he thinks this team is good enough to win a championship:

“I think so. You add our quarterback, one more year smarter, tougher, wiser, knowing what he can do, what he can’t do. The defense, they have a lot to prove. We actually made some plays when we needed to, but we definitely didn’t play to the best of our ability. I think that’s gonna be a challenge to us, myself included. … But I definitely feel like we got a chance to do something special, absolutely.”

On being upbeat despite the fact the Redskins have been hamstrung by cap sanctions:

“Any time you take an $18 million cap hit, man — you can do that to any team in the National Football League, and they’re gonna struggle to compete. We were able to do it last year and win the division, something we hadn’t done in a long time. And you get Fred Davis back healthy, Orakpo back healthy, to get me back on the roster after being released early in the free-agency period, it’s huge. It’s huge. We were able to get quality players — players we felt like could help us win games — but didn’t have to go over the top and spend money.”

On money not being a factor:

“I’ve been blessed in this league to make a lot of money, so for me it wasn’t all about the money. I’m 29 years old, so hopefully if I can go out there and … help this team win a lot of football games and make plays, the rest of it is gonna be taken care of.”

On offers he received from other teams:

“A couple teams gave me some offers that definitely made me think, but like I said, ultimately I had great communication with Coach Shanahan throughout the whole process, with Raheem [Morris] … so the lines of communication were definitely open. I wasn’t shy about letting everybody know I definitely wanted to go back to Washington, but if it didn’t work out, I definitely had some other options out there. Just happy that we both could agree on things. This obviously wasn’t the most money I could get, but it made the most sense for me and my family.”

Hall has been a guy that many Redskins fans either love or hate. No matter which category you fall into, everyone should see this as veteran, team-first mentality coming from DeAngelo. It’s refreshing to know the players want to play in Washington now a days instead of worrying they are only here to collect paychecks, like in the past.

Hail to the Redskins!

Redskins Re-Sign DeAngelo Hall to One Year Deal

128506 330 0 150x150 Redskins Re Sign DeAngelo Hall to One Year DealThe Washington Redskins re-signed veteran cornerback DeAngelo Hall today.

The move will fill the last open need the Redskins have on the roster at a position Hall has played at for a few seasons in DC now. It has been speculated ever since Hall was released that he could in fact return to the Redskins at a much much reduced rate of pay. Hall’s deal is worth $2.25 million; he would have counted approximately $8 million against the salary cap had the Redskins not cut and eventually brought him back. Hall could not be reached for comment, but told 106.7 The Fan that he has not yet signed his contract.

“The whole point of free agency is to test the market to see if anything’s better out there,” Hall told 106.7 The Fan. “I think Mike [Shanahan] made it known that he wanted me [back]. I made it known I wanted to be part of this team. We’ve been down for so long and to finally have something to look forward to … This really is a family atmosphere in that locker room, in that building.”

It is uncertain how the Redskins will be able to get Hall’s deal together and stay under the NFL salary cap at this moment. More than likely that will come with the release of a current player on the roster now or perhaps a restructure of a current contract.

The coaches will be happy that Hall is returning. They tapped into his versatility last season, putting him in the slot and often times at safety (though mostly in a run defense designed to get the other two safeties closer to the line of scrimmage). They have always liked Hall’s toughness. And even though he’s prone to gamble and give up some big plays, he also ended last season by playing two of his better games with the Redskins.

It seems unlikely that the Redskins will be able to sign both, but the Redskins are still actively pursuing free agent cornerback Antoine Winfield as well.

Despite the cap penalty and loss of $36 million in cap space over two seasons, the Redskins have only lost one player they wanted to keep this off-season, linebacker Lorenzo Alexander. Hall is the 12th player to re-sign with Washington, which now have 21 of 22 returning starters under contract from last year’s NFC East Champion team.

DeAngelo Hall Released; Brandon Banks Will not Return to the Redskins

128506 330 0 300x268 DeAngelo Hall Released; Brandon Banks Will not Return to the RedskinsIn what may be the least shocking news of the day, Mike Jones from the Post is reporting that the Redskins have released DeAngelo Hall.

Hall was set to account for nearly $8 million dollars in cap space this year. The move is based purely on money, or lack there of for the Redskins to retain Hall.

DeAngelo Hall’s contract is the one of the reason’s the Redskins were given the $36 million dollar salary cap penalty when they dumped all of his bonus money into the 2010 “uncapped” year.

It is still possible the Redskins could re-sign Hall to a cheaper deal, but the current contract was out of the question.

Wide Receiver/Return man, Brandon Banks will not be back next year as the Redskins decided not to tender him an offer today.

Chris Baker was offered a  a right of first refusal qualifying offer (meaning if another team decides to sign him, the Redskins would have 7 days to match it and would receive no compensation if they didn’t match the offer) worth $1.3 million dollars for one year.

A 4:30 press conference has been scheduled where General Manager Bruce Allen and Head Coach Mike Shanahan will speak about free agency. The overall thought is that there may be more players to add to the list of cuts….this could get interesting.

UPDATED 2:44

Adam Carriker has agreed to restructure his contract. This is what Carriker had to say “It’s unfortunate that the league is penalizing us. I was willing to help. Whatever I can do to help the team.”

Redskins Free Agency Moves Finally Begin

skinslogo 300x225 Redskins Free Agency Moves Finally BeginSaturday proved to be the day that the Washington Redskins would start the inevitable task that is re-signing their own players.

Tight end Logan Paulsen signed a new deal, 3 years, $4.1 million, $1 million signing bonus, as did fullback Darrel Young, 3 years, up to $6.2 million, $1 million signing bonus. Rob Jackson also got in on the action as he signed a one year deal, the terms of which are unknown.

Late last night, another Redskins player got himself a new  5 year deal (terms unknown as of yet), Kory Lichtensteiger.

Interesting enough, Paulsen spoke about the fact that Redskins officials told him that Fred Davis would be brought back to be the starting tight end this year. No news as of yet on if Davis has signed a new deal or not.

The Redskins are pursuing a deal with free agent offensive tackle Tony Pashos as well, although no finalized deal has happened as of yet.

Pashos has played eight NFL seasons for four teams, including the Ravens from 2004-06. He most recently played in Cleveland, where he was the Browns’ starting right tackle in 2010 and 2011.

Pashos sat out last season while recovering from surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his left foot.  The 32-year-old appeared in only 23 games from 2009-11 because of injury.

Rumors have been swirling about DeAngelo Hall possibly being cut or restructured, but nothing official has happened in regards to Hall.

Top Five Redskins Defensive Players of the 2012 Season

london 150x150 Top Five Redskins Defensive Players of the 2012 Season1- London Fletcher

The General of the team and heart of the defense is easy to pick out. London Fletcher is having better seasons in his late thirties than most guys have in their twenties or ever, for that matter.

Fletcher had 139 total combined tackles in 2012 (61 assisted and 78 unassisted), one forced fumble and five interceptions (career high). The untold story is that London played almost the entire year with injuries that kept him from fully practicing.

Fletcher has now played in 240 straight regular season games, a stat that dates all the way back to 1998. He was selected to the Pro Bowl as an alternate but was added to the team last weekend. London was also named 2nd team All-Pro this year and is still deciding whether or not he will play in the 2013 season.

nfl a kerrigan ah 400 150x150 Top Five Redskins Defensive Players of the 2012 Season2- Ryan Kerrigan

When Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo went down early in the season with a shoulder injury many thought the Redskins were doomed. Ryan Kerrigan did all he could this season to try and show everyone he can be a premiere pass rusher.

Kerrigan had 54 total combined tackles (12 assisted and 42 unassisted), two forced fumbles and one recovered fumble and one interception which he returned for a touchdown. Ryan also recorded 8.5 sacks this season, which lead the team.

Going forward into next season Kerrigan looks to be breaking out in Jim Haslett’s defense and should only get better when Orakpo returns. Ryan was also added to the Pro Bowl roster this past weekend.

158824131.0 standard 730.0 150x150 Top Five Redskins Defensive Players of the 2012 Season3- Rob Jackson

Brian Orakpo’s injury this year had many thinking Washington was in trouble; luckily the Redskins had a backup that could step in. Rob Jackson is not the same style of player that Orakpo is but he offers a better coverage player to the mix.

Jackson ended the season with 37 total combined tackles (11 assisted and 26 unassisted), 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery to go along with four interceptions.

The future is cloudy for Jackson as he is a restricted free agent this year and would like to have a chance at being a starter somewhere.

20120825 kdl ae4 200.0 standard 730.0 150x150 Top Five Redskins Defensive Players of the 2012 Season4- Perry Riley

Perry Riley continues to grow as an inside linebacker and appears to be the heir apparent to London Fletcher once he does retire. Riley started every game in 2012 and recorded 129 total combined tackles (56 assisted and 73 unassisted tackles), 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one recovered fumble.

The growth in Riley’s game the last two years is obvious and Perry could look toward 2013 as a real breakout season.

dhallpic1 150x150 Top Five Redskins Defensive Players of the 2012 Season5-DeAngelo Hall

DeAngelo Hall is the most polarizing player on the Washington Redskins roster by far. Many fans can’t stand him while others love the way he plays. One thing is for sure, Hall gets inside of opposing receivers heads for 4 hours on Sunday afternoons.

Hall recorded 90 tackles and at least three interceptions for the third straight year as he had 95 total combined tackles, four interceptions, one sack and one fumble recovery. While he may not be considered an ‘elite’ cornerback in the league any longer, he is still the best coverage man the Redskins have heading into 2013.

The future is unknown for Hall at this point as he is set to have a cap hit somewhere near the 7.5 million dollar area. The Redskins are harnessed with the 18 million dollar salary cap penalty again this season so Hall may have to take less pay to continue to play for Washington.

Redskins win the NFC East for First Time Since 1999

15421 10151410072619574 1358224679 n Redskins win the NFC East for First Time Since 1999The Washington Redskins did something many “experts” never thought they could do, win the NFC East with a rookie quarterback and running back. In a game that will forever go down in Redskins lore, the Redskins controlled the Dallas Cowboys for pretty much the entire game and claimed their 7th win in a row.

The win put the Redskins in the playoffs as the four seed, which means Washington will host the Seattle Seahawks next Sunday in the wild card round.

The Redskins rode Alfred Morris hard in the Sunday Night Football showdown, Morris had 200 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns. Rookie phenom quarterback Robert Griffin III, looked like he was playing at less than 100% but still had 100 yards passing and 63 yards rushing on 6 carries (rushing TD).

DeAngelo Hall had the game of his career as he held Dez Bryant in check for pretty much the entire game. Bryant had 4 catches for 71 yards and no touchdowns.

The Redskins did what they have down all season long, force turnovers without giving any away themselves. Tony Romo threw three interceptions and extended his horrible ‘win or go home’ game record to 1-5. The Cowboys are now 2-11 in week 17 games since 2000.

After Alfred Morris scored on a 1 yard run, the crowd erupted, singing ‘Hail to the Redskins’. Thankfully, Chris Collinsworth finally found the right time to be quiet! (Video below)

Fletcher said Friday that he’ll play if he feels he can help. Fletcher spent last week in a walking boot, but started vs. Dallas. I talked to one person this week who is very familiar with both the Giants and the Redskins and someone I greatly respect. His take? We’ll see what happens, but thought you might like to know.
