Redskins Injury/Rehab Updates

mike shanahan 150x150 Redskins Injury/Rehab UpdatesWashington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan on Wednesday updated the statuses of several players recovering from surgeries.

“We’ve got a lot of guys with treatment right now, a number of guys that will be question marks with OTAs [next month] because they’re going through rehab, which you typically go through this time of year. But I’m hoping everybody should be ready for summer camp [in late July]. There are still a couple guys that are question marks, but I think collectively we’re pretty close to being full go.”

All quotes are attributed to Mike Shanahan…

QB Robert Griffin III (right knee ACL, LCL, medial meniscus): “I think what players do, and anybody does, trainers, they tell you to look at the muscles and you see his quads and his hamstrings. You see him working out with weights, his flexibility, how hard he’s working. Everybody’s very optimistic and they say he’s ahead of schedule.

“Human nature is you have to let a ligament heal. You cannot force that. It’s a time frame that you’ve got to make sure that you don’t push it too hard, and that’s all we’re saying. We want him to work as hard as he can. Do what you can with the muscles around the knee but don’t do anything too quick because we don’t want to set it back. We want it to heal first.”

TE Fred Davis (left Achilles’ tendon): “Fred has made some strides. I think we’ll find out in OTA’s exactly where he’s at but he’s feeling good.

DE Adam Carriker (right quadriceps tendon): “I can’t give you a percentage—I can’t say if it’s 70 or 80—but he’s making strides. It’s much better than it was a month ago, so we’re going to let the due process take care of itself and I’ll update you the more I know.”

ILB London Fletcher (elbow, left ankle): “The elbow surgery went well. The ankle surgery went well. With the elbow, it’s relieved a lot of tension. I understand that with [head athletic trainer] Larry [Hess]. The ankle, he has already gotten in the weight room working out so, he’s doing well.”

RB Roy Helu (left foot/big toe): “He’s still a little bit sore. I still think he’ll be able to go here over the next couple weeks. He’s not 100 percent but he’s close to it. He did set it back about a week ago but according to Larry, he still thinks there’s a chance, so we’ll wait and see.”

SS Reed Doughty (foot; same injury as Helu, Shanahan said): “Reed’s close to 100 percent right now. I think he’ll be able to go.”

OLB Brian Orakpo (left pectoral muscle): “Rak’s 100 percent.”

ILB Keenan Robinson (right pectoral muscle): “He’s doing pretty good. He’s doing pretty good. Just like ‘Rak, it takes a little time. …I’d say Keenan, at least the doctors think he’ll be ready to go in about a month, so we’re hoping to have him ready for OTA’s.”

Redskins Re-Sign TE Fred Davis to a One Year Deal

Fred Davis 150x150 Redskins Re Sign TE Fred Davis to a One Year DealAfter weeks of uncertainty, tight end Fred Davis signed a one year agreement to stay with the Washington Redskins.

Staying in DC was always Fred’s intention, but in recent weeks real question marks started to emerge on if Davis would return or not with the salary cap issues the Redskins have had. Reports have said that Buffalo offered a two year deal worth more money.

The Redskins have once again avoided losing a big time player this off-season after being crippled with the second part of a $36 million dollar cap penalty.

We will have updates on the details as they become available.

UPDATE:

Fred Davis’ one-year deal is worth up to $3.75M ($1.5M signing bonus, $1M base salary & $1.25M in incentives).

Bills Showing Interest in Fred Davis

Fred Davis 150x150 Bills Showing Interest in Fred DavisJust when it appeared that the free agency market for Fred Davis was drying up and the Redskins were the only team still interested, another team has now come forward.

Adam Schefter tweeted the following Sunday morning:

Now maybe that doesn’t sound like a whole lot to some, but it does appear that the Bills are very much interested in Davis. A trip to DC with all the front office brass certainly shows that Buffalo would love nothing less than to have Fred on their team. The Bills starting tight end suffered a torn ACL in week 16 last year and they do not have any other viable options at backup either.

Before Redskins fans get to worried on this one, just remember that Fred Davis agent is Drew Rosenhaus, who is known for trying to drive his clients salary numbers up.

Chances are pretty strong that Rosenhaus is using the Bills as leverage against the Redskins in hopes of getting a bigger offer for Fred. The Bills are looking at drafting a quarterback this year after releasing Ryan Fitzpatrick this off-season. Fred has already been quoted as saying he would rather win than get a big contract and then be unhappy, so a meeting with Buffalo certainly points at a move that is centered at getting a better deal with Washington.

Let’s see if this situation makes the Redskins step up their efforts to get Davis under contract.

Redskins Free Agency Moves Finally Begin

skinslogo 300x225 Redskins Free Agency Moves Finally BeginSaturday proved to be the day that the Washington Redskins would start the inevitable task that is re-signing their own players.

Tight end Logan Paulsen signed a new deal, 3 years, $4.1 million, $1 million signing bonus, as did fullback Darrel Young, 3 years, up to $6.2 million, $1 million signing bonus. Rob Jackson also got in on the action as he signed a one year deal, the terms of which are unknown.

Late last night, another Redskins player got himself a new  5 year deal (terms unknown as of yet), Kory Lichtensteiger.

Interesting enough, Paulsen spoke about the fact that Redskins officials told him that Fred Davis would be brought back to be the starting tight end this year. No news as of yet on if Davis has signed a new deal or not.

The Redskins are pursuing a deal with free agent offensive tackle Tony Pashos as well, although no finalized deal has happened as of yet.

Pashos has played eight NFL seasons for four teams, including the Ravens from 2004-06. He most recently played in Cleveland, where he was the Browns’ starting right tackle in 2010 and 2011.

Pashos sat out last season while recovering from surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his left foot.  The 32-year-old appeared in only 23 games from 2009-11 because of injury.

Rumors have been swirling about DeAngelo Hall possibly being cut or restructured, but nothing official has happened in regards to Hall.

Redskins Off-Season Topics: What Should the Redskins do With Fred Davis?

Fred Davis 300x205 Redskins Off Season Topics: What Should the Redskins do With Fred Davis? With all the obstacles that are facing the Washington Redskins this off-season, mainly the $18 million dollar salary cap penalty, many questions need to be answered. The question of whether or not Fred Davis is replaceable is one of them.

Many NFL teams have made a transition to the “new” prototype player at tight end that includes New Orleans tight end Jimmy Graham as well as New England’s Rob Gronkowski. These new prototype tight ends are much like an extra wide receiver who change the flow of the game and are often times impossible to defend with the match-ups they present to opposing defenses.

In the midst of this transition period, Fred Davis has been blossoming into one of the leagues hot talents at tight end. In 2011 Davis was well on his way to his best season in the NFL when he was suspended for the final four games of the season due to failed drug tests during the lockout the off-season before that. Many fans of the Redskins were shocked at the suspension, but not against keeping the 6-4 Davis, known by many simply as “Sleepy”. In 2012, Davis was set, in the eyes of many, to have his breakout season for the Washington Redskins, but those plans came to a end just seven games in when Davis suffered a torn Achilles tendon against the New York Giants that ended his year.

Davis had 24 catches for 325 yards and no touchdowns in the seven games he played. While the team took an obvious loss by not having him, they actually won the majority of their games after the injury without Davis involved at all, players like Logan Paulsen and Niles Paul stepped up. So now the question is, can the Redskins let Davis walk? He was franchise tagged last year at a 5+ million dollar salary cap number. That will not happen this year as the Redskins are looking to strengthen their salary cap position and have little wiggle room (they currently are $4 million over the cap).

Here are Fred Davis’s career numbers:

davisstats Redskins Off Season Topics: What Should the Redskins do With Fred Davis?

The options with Davis are as follows, the Redskins could re-sign him to a long term deal, to a one year deal or don’t sign him at all. The fact that Davis is not currently under contract eliminates any ideas of trading him.

The long term deal option is a sticky one, Davis will be returning from a major injury and no one knows how well his body will respond to the process of rehab and then of course, NFL caliber football. The one year option presents the best path if the Redskins are trying to determine just what type of player Davis will be post-injury, factor in the thought that he has been suspended once from the league already for substance abuse, and short term trust could be the solution to the problem.

The last option, releasing him, should only happen if the Redskins feel as if Fred can’t help their team or that his contract is too hefty to keep on the books. A quick look at the list of 2013 NFL Free Agents will tell you that the options to replace Davis are not all that strong, nor cheap, making this option tough for a cash strapped team like the Redskins.

Just a few days ago Davis was cleared to return to physical activities, which is a good sign, but it is also to early to tell just how healthy he is.

So what’s your take on the situation?

Redskins WR Robinson: It was bizarre; it was scary | WashingtonExaminer.com

Redskins Final Thoughts: Week 5 | WashingtonExaminer.com
The more I’m around Robert Griffin III the more I’m impressed, just by the way he is with others. He’s not perfect so I’m not going that route. But there’s a savviness that comes through in many ways. Even in press conferences. I’ve seen athletes who come across as, uh, too rehearsed, in fact some may have played quarterback here recently.

Meriweather Still Out; Injuries Force Redskins To Adjust Game Plan ” CBS DC
“The other day we knew Meriweather was going to play. We had a lot of plans for him, a lot of things to do. He actually becomes our third corner in a lot of situations so we had to scrap all that stuff. So, you’re sitting in the locker room crossing things off and thinking of things you can do, and we decided to go with [safety] Reed [Doughty] as the starter. It changed your plans because everybody has their strengths and weaknesses. Meriweather has great strengths because he’s an ex-corner that can play coverage. He’s a really good cover guy and we just lost that ability at the time”, said Jim Haslett.

Robert Griffin III Must Succeed In The Run Game If The Redskins Are To Beat Atlanta ” CBS DC
Make no mistake about it quarterbacks Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III are the future of the NFL. The game is evolving to a point where one day, every NFL quarterback will  be required to run like Mike Vick and throw like Drew Bees (some say RG3 already fits the bill).  Look for NFL coaches to continue to implement college style formations and plays into their respective gameplans.  The NFL will never completely resemble the NCAA, but it’s easy to see that certain collegiate staples are beginning to find a cozy home in the National Football League.

Garçon Ready To Go For Third Start
“You have to go out there and play hard and try to set the tone for the team, the offense and help the running backs get more yards when you’re blocking for them.  It’s part of the game,” Garçon said.  “You just have to go out there and give a great effort.  That’s what coaches ask for and that’s what we’ve got to give them every time.”

Need to Know: Who has the better offense? – Rich Tandler’s Real Redskins
It all adds up to the Redskins being ranked third in the NFL in terms of yards gained with 1687 while the Falcons are 15th with 1461 yards. The Falcons have faced tougher defenses in terms of yards given up in their four games than have the Redskins. Atlanta’s offense has gone up against three defenses ranked 13th or better and the Redskins have faced three that are 19th or worse including the 30th- and 32nd-ranked units.

Morris has only one speed
“Alfred is very conscientious,” offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said Thursday. “He never feels like he’s arrived. He’s working every day in practice [and] walkthroughs.” Shanahan added: “He only goes one speed. We try to slow him down in walkthrough [because] he’s running as hard as he can.”

RG3 will need to set rookie record again
Prior to the scoring change, Griffin was credited with 252 rushing yards, the most any Redskins rookie quarterback has had in a season. As a result of the changes, Griffin now is credited with 18 fewer rushing yards. That makes his total 234 for the season, six yards short of Sammy Baugh’s rookie record of 240 yards.

Need to Know: Moss accepting his new role – Rich Tandler’s Real Redskins
His numbers aren’t off because he’s playing poorly, they are off because he’s getting fewer opportunities. After being the team’s primary receiver since coming to the team in 2005, Moss has taken a back seat to Pierre Garçon, Josh Morgan, and Leonard Hankerson.

Sacks lacking up front for Redskins – Washington Times
Through four games, the Redskins have seven sacks but none from their down linemen. Getting less production from those positions in a 3-4 defense is common, but linemen are determined to make more of a tangible impact. “I believe that the sacks will come,” Kedric Golston said. “There’s really no excuses, whether it’s max protection or quick throws. It’s our job to get the quarterback down on the ground.”

Redskins vs. Falcons: 5 Questions – Washington Times
Which defense will stand up? Atlanta has the third-highest scoring offense in the NFL, averaging 31.0 points per game. The Redskins rank fourth at 30.8. Only two games have a greater over/under than the 50 points oddsmakers assigned to this one. The Redskins’ defense is way better on third down (34.1 percent), though, than Atlanta’s (48).

RGIII visits Broad Run game
Because Robert Griffin III isn’t actually a real person but rather a cyborg sent from outer space to set offensive records and inspire teammates and make both hard-core football fans and suburban parents swoon, he decided to show up at Broad Run on Friday night and pose for photos with cheerleaders and assorted students while wearing a breast cancer awareness shirt.

The Future Of The NFL: Mobile Quarterbacks -
The game is moving at a different speed than that of the 1960′s,70′s, 80′s, and even 1990′s. It’s a whole different animal. As defenses get faster, offenses have to find ways to subvert that speed. The solution? More speed. Ever hear of the old saying “Fighting fire with fire”? I’m pretty sure Steve Young and his 49ers used that term when talking about how to get around defensive speed.

Trent Williams, Fred Davis earn back Redskins teammates’ trust – The Washington Post
“That’s a driving force behind a lot of things that I do as of now,” Williams said this week. “I made a mistake, and I kind of use it as a learning experience. Of course, I alienated my team for four games and wasn’t able to be there. I was a captain at the time, and that made me feel even worse. This year I’m just trying to prove to them that I’ve grown up a lot and that’s not me anymore.”

Washington Redskins pass defense hindered by instability at safety – The Washington Post
But things haven’t gone as scripted, with Meriweather hurt and Jackson serving a suspension by the NFL for violating the sport’s substance abuse policy. The Redskins again are left patching together a lineup at safety to face the unbeaten Atlanta Falcons and their highly productive quarterback, Matt Ryan, Sunday at FedEx Field.
