1- Robert Griffin III

For nearly 20 years the Washington Redskins searched for a franchise quarterback who could lead them back to glory,they found it in 2012. Griffin ushered in a new era of football in DC. The speedy RG3 gave coach Mike Shanahan and assistant coach Kyle Shanahan the dynamics to unleash an offense that defenses in the NFL had no clue how to defend. Griffin completed 258 passes while attempting 393, for a 65.6 completion percentage, 3,200 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions.Robert’s passing rating was third best in the NFL at 102.4, and he broke the NFL rushing record for a rookie quarterback with 815 yards and seven touchdowns while only playing 15 games for the Redskins.

Robert Griffin III has the distinction of leading the league in yards per play passing (8.14 yards per play) and rushing (6.8 yards per carry) in the 2012 season. The future is unknown for Griffin at the moment after suffering ACL and LCL tears in his right knee during the playoffs this year, but he is determined to make a comeback and be better than ever before in 2013. His recovery time is projected to be 6-8 months, which would be just in time for the 2013 season.

2- Alfred Morris

It would not be completely fair to say that Alfred Morris is the “second” best, it was more like RG3 was 1A and Morris is 1B. While Griffin did in fact change the way teams view the Redskins, clearly Alfred Morris was the work-horse back that fueled the Redskins run.

Teams were completely shocked as week after week they set their game-plan up to stop Griffin and then Alfred would tear them up. Morris rushed 335 times for 1,613 yards (Redskins franchise record) and 13 touchdowns in 2012. Alfred rushed for over 100+ yards on seven different occasions, including 200 yards against the rival Cowboys in the last game of the season. The 24-year old Morris finished second in the NFL in rushing to only Adrian Peterson, who finished 9 yards shy of the NFL record.

3- Trent Williams

Many questions loomed over Trent Williams heading into the 2012 season. Williams was suspended from the Redskins for the final four games of the 2011 campaign for failing a drug screen. Williams came out on a mission and with the intention to make up for his past wrong doings.

Trent has risen to being one of the top left tackles in all of football in the last few months and is the main line of protection for RG3 and the high octane Redskins offense. Going forward the 24-year old will look to be the leader of the offensive line for years to come as he is already a team captain.

4- Pierre Garcon

The Washington Redskins had a collection of stats that will make even the most pessimistic fan happy in 2012. One of the biggest stats that has fell between the cracks is the record the Redskins had in games Pierre Garcon started in the regular season. The Redskins were in fact 9-1 in those games as Garcon missed 6 games this year due to injury. Garcon is still contemplating surgery on his injured toe this off-season, he would like to avoid the procedure altogether if possible.

Pierre finished the year with 44 catches for 633 yards and four touchdowns, in only 10 games. Many who questioned the pickup of Garcon in the off-season quickly changed their minds once they saw the way Pierre made plays after the catch this year.

5- Kai Forbath

Since Chip Lohmiller left Washington many years ago the Redskins have had issues at place kicker ever since. Truth is, no kicker the Redskins have employed has been able to stay consistent or come through in clutch situations. After Billy Cundiff started the 2012 year off missing five of his first 12 kicks, the Redskins decided to sign another kicker.

The result of the kicker search turned up Kai Forbath who had never attempted a kick in the NFL and had spent the 2011 season on the non-injured, non-playing list for the Dallas Cowboys. Forbath responded by kicking a 50 yarder on his first attempt. Kai went on to successfully kick his first 17 in a row (an NFL record) before missing his first kick in the season finale against Dallas. Forbath also was good on 33 extra point attempts this season and scored 84 points in only 11 games.

turkeydayawardrg3 Redskins vs Cowboys: Five Things to Take From This GameThe thanksgiving day game against the Cowboys was perhaps the most satisfying turkey day in quite some time for fans of the Washington Redskins. The Redskins traveled to the stadium known as ‘Jerry World’ to take on their hated rivals, the Cowboys and preceded to take it to the home team 38-31. A game that wasn’t exactly as close as the score would suggest too place with the Redskins delivering a serious blow in a 28 point second quarter.

It would appear as if coach Mike Shanahan took the foot off the peddle a little bit after halftime, which allowed the Cowboys to get back into the game. In a moment when it seemed like Shanahan realized that his offense would have to pick the pace back up, Robert Griffin III threw his first interception in weeks and Dallas was able to score again a few plays later.

Griffin remained poised when he returned to the field after Dallas closed to 7 points and led the Redskins on a nice long sustained drive that ended with a 47 yard Kai Forbath kick that put the Redskins up 38-28. Forbath is now 10-10 on the season and has been the teams most consistent player since being signed early this year. Here are five things we can take from this game.

  1. Robert Griffin III is the truth - No more need for analyst and haters alike to question if this kid can do more than just run the ball, 4 passing touchdown games back to back prove that Griffin is indeed a true franchise qb who can run if he needs to. The most common mistake teams have made against RG3 is they believe that if they can contain his rushing game that they can beat the Redskins, when in fact, Griffin would much rather have the opportunity to throw it deep every play. Griffin’s overall play has him being included in the short list of NFL qb’s both statistically and in leadership categories as well as he was named captain after only nine games and is the clear cut leader in DC. RG3 is 54/71 (76%) 769 yards, ten touchdowns, two interceptions, 27 carries for 202 yards in 3 NFC East games with point totals of 23, 31, and 38.
  2. The Redskins offense has big-play ability – After the Dallas game, the offense now has 10 touchdown plays of 30 yards or more and they also have eight touchdown plays of 59 yards or more. In years past the Redskin simply put didn’t have the play-makers to be capable of this. Robert Griffin III has proven to have unreal play fake ability which has lead to the defenses getting sucked in on plays. The addition of players like Garcon and Aldrick Robinson who clearly are upgrades over last years system have helped as well. Coach Kyle Shanahan has also been on point this year with his play-calling ability in crunch time. This offense is quickly becoming a well oiled machine that is carrying the entire team.
  3. Kai Forbath is clutch – Early this season when former Redskins kicker Billy Cundiff was struggling through his short time with the team, the question was asked over and over again, would the Redskins ever find a quality kicker? Forbath has answered that question quite effectively by going out after getting his shot with the Redskins and being successful on all ten of his attempts this year. Having a kicker who just goes out and kicks and is successful gives the Redskins a reliable piece of the offense that hasn’t been seen in DC since Chip Lohmiller retired.
  4. Santana Moss has become RGIII’s main target – Many thought coming into this season that Santana Moss was going to be an after thought in an offense that signed Josh Morgan and Pierre Garcon in the off-season. Moss, who lost 15 pounds in the off-season, has responded with the most touchdown catches he has had since 2005 and is averaging 14.3 yards per catch, the best he has been at that since 2007. Even though he only had 42 yards on 4 catches against the Cowboys, the yards and catches Moss has been involved with have been in clutch situations. Against Philly, Moss caught a 61 yard bomb that for all intended purposes probably should never have been thrown. Moss responded by jumping over two defenders while making the catch and then dove into the end-zone for the score. The play reminded many of the other Moss, Randy that is, who of course is of no relation to Tanaman.
  5. Playoffs are not out of the question – Now that the Redskins have won two straight games against NFC East opponents, they find themselves in an interesting position. If the New York Giants lose their game this week on Sunday night to the Green Bay Packers it will setup a battle for first place next Monday night at FedEx Field. That’s right fans, a meaningful game that will decide first place in December in the nations capitol is very possible. That Monday night game is the must win of the season because there is little chance that the Redskins could recover if they lose since they would be two games back of NY and the Giants would hold the tie breaker. This is still something that will not come easy to the Redskins but it’s miles away from where the team was just three weeks ago after losing to lowly Carolina and heading into the bye.

Pierre Garçon said if he emerges from Saturday’s walkthrough unscathed, he intends to suit up 24 hours later against the Eagles. It would be the first game action for the Redskins’ top wide out since Oct. 7. “I feel all right,” he said after Friday’s practice at Redskins Park. “I should be good to go on Sunday. I’ll see how I feel [Saturday], and I should be out there giving it all I got [against the Eagles].”

I think that people are generally familiar with RG3’s body of work so far this season, but what about Alfred Morris?  RG3 is of course the golden child and the face/future of the franchise, but has Morris actually been more important to the success of the offense, and what makes him so effective? Morris means SO much to this offense. I knew he was something special when one of his first carries of pre-season he trucked Lance Briggs. No one does that to Briggs. With the running options between Morris and Alfred…LBs have to hold. Have to. With RGIII’s accuracy, that leaves holes. Losing Fred Davis has meant so much though. He was the leading Redskins WR in targets.

I do like Alfred Morris to have a good game. The Eagles have not allowed a 100-yard rusher, but let’s not throw confetti and call them a great run-stopping defense. They allow 4.2 yards per carry and a number of backs have had strong games vs. them – six have gained at least 60 yards and in each case they’ve averaged at least 4.4 yards per carry. The reason no back has rushed for more than 100 yards is that only one back, Atlanta’s Michael Turner, has carried more than 19 times against them.

Despite being the 13th running back selected, Morris has started every game this season and is the No. 2 overall rookie for rushing yards, trailing only the Buccaneers’ Doug Martin (862). “We knew Alfred had a chance to be good,” offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan noted recently.  “But if we thought he was as good as he’s been playing, then we probably would have drafted him before the sixth round.

Burkholder, whose work in this particular area helped form the basis for the NFL’s concussion-recovery protocol, used the terms “foggy,” “not very alert,” and “heavy-eyed” to describe Vick and said he’s “not even close” to returning. Rookie Nick Foles will start at quarterback in Vick’s place Sunday against the Washington Redskins, and it sounds as though the Eagles will need Foles to start more than just this one game.

The Washington Redskins finally got the monkey off their backs at home, after 8 straight losses at home, the Redskins used a strong defensive outing and strong play from their rookie quarterback to beat the Minnesota Vikings 38-26. The win was a strong combination of effective offensive game planning by Kyle Shanahan and the fact that the defense stepped up in key situations.

The announcers in the game talked from the onset about the fact that Jim Haslett had spoke about his defense needing three key turnovers to get the victory against the Vikings. Ask and you shall receive, Madieu Williams had an interception he returned for a touchdown, Lorenzo Alexander was able to recover a fumble by Christian Ponder on a sack, and DeAngelo Hall intercepted Ponder as well in the last seconds of the game.

The game looked like it was playing well into the Vikings hand early on as they jumped out to a 9-0 lead behind three field goals by Blair Walsh. From that point the Redskins proceeded to score 24 answered points to take control.

Alfred Morris rushed 16 times for 47 yards and a touchdown but wasn’t much of a factor as RG3 was the main focal point on offense. New kicker Kai Forbath was successful on his first and only kick of the day, a 50 yarder, which was also his first NFL kick.

Robert Griffin III had one of his best games in his short career, he was 17-22, for 182 yards, 1 touchdown and one interception and rushed the ball 13 times for 138 yards and 2 touchdowns, the last one was a 76 yarder (video below). Griffin showed no bad signs from his “mild” concussion of a week ago, after his long TD run the crowd at FedEx Field all chanted…RG3…RG3…RG3!!!

The win improved the Redskins to 3-3 on the year and dropped the Vikings to 4-2.

The Washington Redskins will face the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday at FedEx Field as Washington tries to break it’s current home losing streak, which stands at 8 (a number which stretches back to week two of the 2011 season). This game is a must-win for the Redskins with them heading to New York to take on the Giants next week and Pittsburgh the following week after.

  1. Robert Griffin III - Easily the biggest story-line of them all, Griffin still has yet to be cleared to play this weekend but all signs point to him making a comeback this week from last week’s “mild” concussion. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan has already said that the game-plan will stay the same no matter if RGIII plays or not. Griffin’s play making ability is hard to match, so obviously the chances of winning are greater if he is the signal caller who is under center on Sunday.
  2. New Kicker, hopefully better results – Earlier this week Redskins place kicker Billy Cundiff was released and Kai Forbath was signed to replace him. Forbath, a former Lou Groza award winner from UCLA, has never kicked a field goal in an NFL game but was 5-5 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in preseason this year. In the last few weeks the kicking game, or lack there of, has taken the wind out of the offense on more than one occasion and has hurt the time as far as momentum has been concerned. The Redskins are hoping Forbath can at least be an answer in short range after Cundiff proved inept in that department.
  3. Containing Percy Harvin – With the Redskins secondary being the weak-link of the unit this year, seeing Harvin lined up across the line should be something that defensive coordinator Jim Haslett worried. Harvin has 38 catches on the season for a total of 407 yards and a touchdown, thing is, Harvin has gotten 77.6 % of his yards after the catch, which is amazing. Washington will need to find an answer to Harvin early or look for a long day on defense.
  4. Pressure on the QB – Minesota finds itself near the top of the league in this department and the Redskins offensive line will need to pay extra attention to defensive end Jared Allen if they want to control the tempo of this game. The Redskins have found themselves in un-familiar territory this year as Brian Orakpo and Adam Carriker both went down early on this year. Second year linebacker Ryan Kerrigan has shined and will need to get to Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder early and often. The defensive unit needs one or more people to step up and give Kerrigan some help if the Redskins are to get any better this year, keep an eye on Barry Cofield and Jarvis Jenkins in this one.
  5. Control the clock –  For Minnesota  this game will mark the first time Adrian Peterson has returned to FedEx Field since a season ending knee injury last year, Peterson’s performance will dictate whatever the Vikings do on offense. For the Redskins they will need to get rookie Alfred Morris going early and make the game as simple as possible for Robert Griffin III to be able to manage without mistakes or injuries. Morris will try to become the first running back in NFL history to rush for 75 or more yards in his first six games, he is tied with Eric Dickerson currently with 5.

The Washington Redskins  have signed field goal kicker Kai Forbath who was projected as the second best kicker in the 2011 draft after winning the Lou Groza award (given to the best place kicker in the country) in 2009 at UCLA. Forbath was signed as a un-drafted free agent  by the Dallas Cowbows last year and then put on the non-injured/reserve list and then waived on April 16 of this year, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed him the next day but cut him in camp . Forbath kicked the only points in against the Redskins in preseason this year when the Bucs and Skins met.

This reported signing means the Redskins are sure to now release kicker Billy Cundiff following another poor outing last weekend against the Atlanta Falcons when Cundiff missed a 31 yard field goal(his second in two weeks from that distance) that would have given the Redskins a 10-0 lead with very little time left in the first half.

Updated 5:00 PM Eastern Standard Time….Billy Cundiff has officially been released. 

This signing comes after free agent kickers Olindo Mare, Josh Brown and Forbath were at Redskins Park today working out. Forbath will become the 19th place kicker the Redskins have had since 1994.

Forbath was 5/5 in preseason this year but has never attempted a kick in the NFL’s regular season. He made 10 of 13 field goals from beyond 50 yards at UCLA, including the game winning  51-yarder as senior to beat Oregon State, he also hit on 84.2 % of his field goals (72.2 % as a senior).
