London Fletcher No. 86: NFL Top 100 Players of 2013 (Video)

The NFL annually does a ‘Top Players of’ list (voted on by the players) after each season as most people know. This years list is being shown on NFL Network the next couple of weeks and London Fletcher was listed at number 86.

Fletcher is the second Redskins player to be o the list so far, as Trent Williams ranked in at number 99.

The 5-10, 245 Fletcher is about to start his 16th NFL season, year number 15 was a gem by anyone’s standard.

All London Fletcher did was register 141 tackles, 78 unassisted, get 5 interceptions and make 3 sacks.

Fletcher was named the Pro Bowl as a alternate last year and continued to be the captain of the Redskins defense despite having major issues with his ankle and elbow, both of which required surgery after the season.

One could make a valid argument that London Fletcher should be much higher on this list.  Since the players vote on this list, I’m wondering what they were thinking when they penciled in Fletch that low.

There are sure to be more EVEN Redskins players on the list….stay tuned.

London Fletcher: “I Feel Like we are on the Verge of Doing Some big Things Here”

Redskins linebacker London Fletcher joined Chuck Carroll and Adam Carriker on ‘4th and Pain‘.

When asked how the off-season was going London replied, “Well and good, just rehabbing from the surgeries I’ve had. Just getting in their everyday and getting after that, it’s been a different process for me never having gone through surgery before. So it’s something I have got to get used to, learning patience, the process, as far as rehab goes.”

Adam – With this being your first two surgeries of your life,  how have the surgeries treated you so far?

London replied, “The first surgery I was very nervous, I’ve never had surgery so I wasn’t excited about being put to sleep. Once I woke up I was happy that the first surgery was over with.”

Adam – What was your biggest fear when you had that first surgery?

London replied, “Not waking up (followed by laughter by everyone). The second surgery went well after having experienced the other one already.”

Chuck – What were the motivating factors that made you want to return this season?

“I feel like I still have a lot of football left in me and that I can still play at a high level. I feel like we are on the verge of doing some big things here and I’m wanting to be a part of it.

Make sure to watch the entire interview, which lasted 11 minutes and touches on other things besides football.

4th and Pain is hosted by Redskins defensive end Adam Carriker and weight loss champion Chuck Carroll. It is the best (and only) pro wrestling radio show hosted by a NFL player and a guy who dropped 250 pounds.

Redskins Injury/Rehab Updates

mike shanahan 150x150 Redskins Injury/Rehab UpdatesWashington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan on Wednesday updated the statuses of several players recovering from surgeries.

“We’ve got a lot of guys with treatment right now, a number of guys that will be question marks with OTAs [next month] because they’re going through rehab, which you typically go through this time of year. But I’m hoping everybody should be ready for summer camp [in late July]. There are still a couple guys that are question marks, but I think collectively we’re pretty close to being full go.”

All quotes are attributed to Mike Shanahan…

QB Robert Griffin III (right knee ACL, LCL, medial meniscus): “I think what players do, and anybody does, trainers, they tell you to look at the muscles and you see his quads and his hamstrings. You see him working out with weights, his flexibility, how hard he’s working. Everybody’s very optimistic and they say he’s ahead of schedule.

“Human nature is you have to let a ligament heal. You cannot force that. It’s a time frame that you’ve got to make sure that you don’t push it too hard, and that’s all we’re saying. We want him to work as hard as he can. Do what you can with the muscles around the knee but don’t do anything too quick because we don’t want to set it back. We want it to heal first.”

TE Fred Davis (left Achilles’ tendon): “Fred has made some strides. I think we’ll find out in OTA’s exactly where he’s at but he’s feeling good.

DE Adam Carriker (right quadriceps tendon): “I can’t give you a percentage—I can’t say if it’s 70 or 80—but he’s making strides. It’s much better than it was a month ago, so we’re going to let the due process take care of itself and I’ll update you the more I know.”

ILB London Fletcher (elbow, left ankle): “The elbow surgery went well. The ankle surgery went well. With the elbow, it’s relieved a lot of tension. I understand that with [head athletic trainer] Larry [Hess]. The ankle, he has already gotten in the weight room working out so, he’s doing well.”

RB Roy Helu (left foot/big toe): “He’s still a little bit sore. I still think he’ll be able to go here over the next couple weeks. He’s not 100 percent but he’s close to it. He did set it back about a week ago but according to Larry, he still thinks there’s a chance, so we’ll wait and see.”

SS Reed Doughty (foot; same injury as Helu, Shanahan said): “Reed’s close to 100 percent right now. I think he’ll be able to go.”

OLB Brian Orakpo (left pectoral muscle): “Rak’s 100 percent.”

ILB Keenan Robinson (right pectoral muscle): “He’s doing pretty good. He’s doing pretty good. Just like ‘Rak, it takes a little time. …I’d say Keenan, at least the doctors think he’ll be ready to go in about a month, so we’re hoping to have him ready for OTA’s.”

London Fletcher to Have Surgery, Plans Return to Redskins in 2013

london 150x150 London Fletcher to Have Surgery, Plans Return to Redskins in 2013Thirty-seven year old London Fletcher told CBS/DC reporter David Elfin that he is going to undergo surgery on his bothersome left ankle Wednesday morning. Fletcher said he’s making preparations to play in 2013.

Fletcher also plans to have elbow surgery later this month in an effort to make sure he’s ready for his 16th NFL season.

“Surgery is the first step towards prepping for next season” - London Fletcher

If Fletcher does return, it would be a huge relief for the Redskins, who aren’t in a position to replace the Pro Bowler due to salary-cap restrictions and a lack of high picks in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Fletcher led the Redskins with 139 tackles in 2012 and added five interceptions and three sacks.

Top Five Redskins Defensive Players of the 2012 Season

london 150x150 Top Five Redskins Defensive Players of the 2012 Season1- London Fletcher

The General of the team and heart of the defense is easy to pick out. London Fletcher is having better seasons in his late thirties than most guys have in their twenties or ever, for that matter.

Fletcher had 139 total combined tackles in 2012 (61 assisted and 78 unassisted), one forced fumble and five interceptions (career high). The untold story is that London played almost the entire year with injuries that kept him from fully practicing.

Fletcher has now played in 240 straight regular season games, a stat that dates all the way back to 1998. He was selected to the Pro Bowl as an alternate but was added to the team last weekend. London was also named 2nd team All-Pro this year and is still deciding whether or not he will play in the 2013 season.

nfl a kerrigan ah 400 150x150 Top Five Redskins Defensive Players of the 2012 Season2- Ryan Kerrigan

When Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo went down early in the season with a shoulder injury many thought the Redskins were doomed. Ryan Kerrigan did all he could this season to try and show everyone he can be a premiere pass rusher.

Kerrigan had 54 total combined tackles (12 assisted and 42 unassisted), two forced fumbles and one recovered fumble and one interception which he returned for a touchdown. Ryan also recorded 8.5 sacks this season, which lead the team.

Going forward into next season Kerrigan looks to be breaking out in Jim Haslett’s defense and should only get better when Orakpo returns. Ryan was also added to the Pro Bowl roster this past weekend.

158824131.0 standard 730.0 150x150 Top Five Redskins Defensive Players of the 2012 Season3- Rob Jackson

Brian Orakpo’s injury this year had many thinking Washington was in trouble; luckily the Redskins had a backup that could step in. Rob Jackson is not the same style of player that Orakpo is but he offers a better coverage player to the mix.

Jackson ended the season with 37 total combined tackles (11 assisted and 26 unassisted), 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery to go along with four interceptions.

The future is cloudy for Jackson as he is a restricted free agent this year and would like to have a chance at being a starter somewhere.

20120825 kdl ae4 200.0 standard 730.0 150x150 Top Five Redskins Defensive Players of the 2012 Season4- Perry Riley

Perry Riley continues to grow as an inside linebacker and appears to be the heir apparent to London Fletcher once he does retire. Riley started every game in 2012 and recorded 129 total combined tackles (56 assisted and 73 unassisted tackles), 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one recovered fumble.

The growth in Riley’s game the last two years is obvious and Perry could look toward 2013 as a real breakout season.

dhallpic1 150x150 Top Five Redskins Defensive Players of the 2012 Season5-DeAngelo Hall

DeAngelo Hall is the most polarizing player on the Washington Redskins roster by far. Many fans can’t stand him while others love the way he plays. One thing is for sure, Hall gets inside of opposing receivers heads for 4 hours on Sunday afternoons.

Hall recorded 90 tackles and at least three interceptions for the third straight year as he had 95 total combined tackles, four interceptions, one sack and one fumble recovery. While he may not be considered an ‘elite’ cornerback in the league any longer, he is still the best coverage man the Redskins have heading into 2013.

The future is unknown for Hall at this point as he is set to have a cap hit somewhere near the 7.5 million dollar area. The Redskins are harnessed with the 18 million dollar salary cap penalty again this season so Hall may have to take less pay to continue to play for Washington.

Redskins London Fletcher and Ryan Kerrigan Heading to the Pro Bowl

londonandkerrigan 300x222 Redskins London Fletcher and Ryan Kerrigan Heading to the Pro BowlWashington Redskins linebackers London Fletcher and Ryan Kerrigan have been added to the 2013 NFC Pro Bowl roster following the 49ers and Falcons game Sunday.

Why you may ask? The answer is that Niners linebackers Aldon Smith and Patrick Willis will both be heading to the Superbowl and will not be able to attend.

For Fletcher this is his fourth straight appearance in the NFL’s version of the All-Star game. For Ryan Kerrigan this is the his first trip to Hawaii as a professional. The Redskins will be sending three linebackers in all to Hawaii this year as special teams demon Lorenzo Alexander was already selected to the team.

The Redskins will send five players (the most since 1996) to the Pro Bowl this year total (Trent Williams will be there as well), although Robert Griffin III will obviously not play while he is recovering from surgery.

Niners running-back Frank Gore will also be scratched from the lineup, many Redskins fans may have thought that Alfred Morris would then get the honor, not so. Alfred Morris was named the second alternate after voting and Tampa Bay Bucs running back Doug Martin was the first alternate, Martin was added to the roster Sunday night as well.

Fletcher had another banner year despite turning 37. The inside linebacker started all 16 games (NFL record 241 starts in a row since 1998) made 139 tackles, three sacks and five interceptions this season while being bothered most of the year by injury. London was also named as a alternate for the Pro Bowl this year. London Fletcher continues to show people every year just how special a player he truly is.

Morris is officially the newest ‘Shanahan running back’ to take the league by storm after being a late round pickup. Alfred Morris set a new franchise rushing record and smashed every Redskins rookie record on the books this season.  Morris’s numbers on the year; 335 rushes for 1,613 yards, 4.8 yards per carry and 13 touchdowns. Redskins injury report: RG3 questionable for Sunday | WashingtonExaminer.com
After being limited for a third straight day in practice, Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is questionable for Sunday’s game at Cleveland. And he remains a game-time decision.

Redskins Final Thoughts: Week 15 | WashingtonExaminer.com
Can they win with Kirk Cousins? Of course. If they can force Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden to turn the ball over – he has 15 picks – it would help. Also, Browns running back Trent Richardson is not 100 percent and maybe not close to that.

London Fletcher ‘can’t get caught up’ in Cleveland homecoming
“To be going home, it’s always special,” Fletcher said. “Grew up a Browns fans so still like the Browns. But it’s still just another game that we need to win. So I can’t get caught up in any of that.”

ESPN suspends Rob Parker “until further notice” | ProFootballTalk
ESPN has suspended columnist and commentator Rob Parker indefinitely after he said on the air Thursday Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is “black, but he’s not really,” because Griffin is engaged to a white woman. “Rob Parker has been suspended until further notice.

Shanahan: Griffin still a game-time decision vs. Browns (updated)
“He continues to get better,” Shanahan said.  The coach said there still is no decision on Griffin’s status for Sunday’s game at Cleveland. Griffin is officially listed as questionable and will be a game-time decision, Shanahan said.

Redskins-Browns: Five storylines to follow

Alfred Morris’ production – A big day from Alfred Morris will likely be key to Washington’s success regardless of which quarterback plays. The Redskins are 6-1 in games that Morris receives 20 carries or more. Getting him going against Cleveland will take a good deal of playmaking pressure off of the quarterback, and it will set up the play-action attack.

“It’s a little bit of a challenge because I can’t lock in as much as I usually do to exactly how to order and what I’m trying to attack. I’ve got to be a little bit more open-minded because there’s a few different directions you could go,” said Shanahan. If Cousins does start the game, the Redskins will be operating out of the same playbook but emphasizing very different plays. Shanahan said that they only average about nine read option plays per game, plays that RG3 excels in running and that Cousins can’t. Those plays will need to be replaced with something else. But taking away the option has ripple effects. “Just the threat of it does help” in setting up other plays, said Shanahan.

“You keep your fingers crossed,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. “Both have significant injuries and you’re hoping over the next few days that they’ll be able to go.” Williams has said a couple times this week that he expects to play Monday. Fletcher said Friday that he’ll play if he feels he can help. Fletcher spent last week in a walking boot, but started vs. Dallas. Redskins Final Thoughts: Week 13 | WashingtonExaminer.com
I talked to one person this week who is very familiar with both the Giants and the Redskins and someone I greatly respect. His take? If the Redskins don’t turn the ball over, they will blow the Giants out. Why? Because of how well the Redskins handle Giants QB Eli Manning (and because of QB Robert Griffin III). We’ll see what happens, but thought you might like to know.

Fletcher plays on and on and on…

“In this league, you’ve got to prove it. We haven’t proved it,” Hall said. “Even though We’ve beaten them two out of the last three times, you still got to prove it. You’ve got to prove it. Even though we’ve matched up well against them, we haven’t matched up against other teams in this league. I can’t argue with him right now. They won the last one, and they’ve got two Super Bowl rings over the last [five] years. So, we’ve got to keep working. We’ve got to keep working, keep grinding. We’ll see what he says after the game.”

RGIII has Tom Cruise’s number in his phone
The dog tags around Griffin’s neck that were briefly visible during the Eagles game, as seen above? No, they’re not his father’s. “It has my fiancée’s ring on it,” he told Hellie. “It has a Bible verse, Jeremiah 29:11, just to remind me, and it’s something I’ve always worn. Fletcher Will Start for Redskins on Sunday Against Steelers

8065134834 a949ffab18 o Fletcher Will Start for Redskins on Sunday Against Steelers
Veteran linebacker London Fletcher will start Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers (per twitter report from Jason La Canfora), which means his streak of 231 consecutive starts will remain in tact. It was thought that Fletcher may miss the game since he hurt his hamstring against the Giants, and reports have said he was having issues with balance this week. After a week of tests, all seems well as Fletcher practiced fully by weeks end and says he feels fine.

The Redskins need London to preform well this weekend as they look to stop Pittsburgh’s clock grinding offense.
