Redskins Injury/Rehab Updates

mike shanahan 150x150 Redskins Injury/Rehab UpdatesWashington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan on Wednesday updated the statuses of several players recovering from surgeries.

“We’ve got a lot of guys with treatment right now, a number of guys that will be question marks with OTAs [next month] because they’re going through rehab, which you typically go through this time of year. But I’m hoping everybody should be ready for summer camp [in late July]. There are still a couple guys that are question marks, but I think collectively we’re pretty close to being full go.”

All quotes are attributed to Mike Shanahan…

QB Robert Griffin III (right knee ACL, LCL, medial meniscus): “I think what players do, and anybody does, trainers, they tell you to look at the muscles and you see his quads and his hamstrings. You see him working out with weights, his flexibility, how hard he’s working. Everybody’s very optimistic and they say he’s ahead of schedule.

“Human nature is you have to let a ligament heal. You cannot force that. It’s a time frame that you’ve got to make sure that you don’t push it too hard, and that’s all we’re saying. We want him to work as hard as he can. Do what you can with the muscles around the knee but don’t do anything too quick because we don’t want to set it back. We want it to heal first.”

TE Fred Davis (left Achilles’ tendon): “Fred has made some strides. I think we’ll find out in OTA’s exactly where he’s at but he’s feeling good.

DE Adam Carriker (right quadriceps tendon): “I can’t give you a percentage—I can’t say if it’s 70 or 80—but he’s making strides. It’s much better than it was a month ago, so we’re going to let the due process take care of itself and I’ll update you the more I know.”

ILB London Fletcher (elbow, left ankle): “The elbow surgery went well. The ankle surgery went well. With the elbow, it’s relieved a lot of tension. I understand that with [head athletic trainer] Larry [Hess]. The ankle, he has already gotten in the weight room working out so, he’s doing well.”

RB Roy Helu (left foot/big toe): “He’s still a little bit sore. I still think he’ll be able to go here over the next couple weeks. He’s not 100 percent but he’s close to it. He did set it back about a week ago but according to Larry, he still thinks there’s a chance, so we’ll wait and see.”

SS Reed Doughty (foot; same injury as Helu, Shanahan said): “Reed’s close to 100 percent right now. I think he’ll be able to go.”

OLB Brian Orakpo (left pectoral muscle): “Rak’s 100 percent.”

ILB Keenan Robinson (right pectoral muscle): “He’s doing pretty good. He’s doing pretty good. Just like ‘Rak, it takes a little time. …I’d say Keenan, at least the doctors think he’ll be ready to go in about a month, so we’re hoping to have him ready for OTA’s.”

Mike Shanahan on RG3 Comeback: “Mother Nature Will Take Its Course”

When Mike Shanahan took to the podium earlier today for his press conference, he had one message to send to all of those who have been wondering about the health concerns of playing Robert Griffin III too early after returning from a serious knee injury. The Redskins are going to do everything in their power to not rush him back to soon.

On how surprised he is with what he’s seeing from quarterback Robert Griffin III:

“The one thing I don’t want to do is I don’t want to see anything too quick. I mean we’re dealing with an ACL. That takes time. Mother Nature is going to take its course. The thing that you love about Robert is he’s working the muscles around it. He loves to work. He does everything we ask him to do and then some to get himself ready.”

“There’s a time frame and there’s Mother Nature that’s involved and that ligament takes time to heal, so we’ve got to make sure that he doesn’t go too quick, because we don’t want him to do anything too quickly because he could set it back. When you work as hard as he does and your muscles are strong around the ligament, sometimes guys have the tendency to go too quick and we’re going to try to make sure that he doesn’t.”

On if he consistently talks to RGIII about not rushing through rehab:

“Well, I think what players do, and anybody does, trainers, they tell you to look at the muscles and you see his quads and his hamstrings. You see him working out with weights, his flexibility, how hard he’s working. Everybody’s very optimistic and they say he’s ahead of schedule.”

On Griffin III’s injury and what collectively he and the staff would have done differently:

“I think it’s been talked about enough. What we’re going to do is make sure Robert’s 100 percent. I get a feel with people the more I’m around them. I think players get more of a feeling for me, but the one thing you want to make sure of is how somebody practices gives them an opportunity to play in the game. If somebody does, what you think, someone might get injured, it’s your gut to take somebody out. Sometimes it changes from year to year. I know mine does with different players.”

“Every situation is different and sometimes you make the right call. There are times you don’t, but at the end of the day you’re always hoping that you’ll learn from your mistakes, whatever they are. At the end of this year, when we go into next year, one thing we want to make sure of is Robert never plays if he’s not 100 percent, so if he does tell me something, I’m not going to believe him this year compared to last year…That was a joke. That was a joke, I think [said while laughing]. But anyway, we’ll have fun with that.”

On what he meant when he said Griffin III will “set a record” for coming back:

“I didn’t say that. You’ve got to quote me the whole saying. I said, ‘If hard work had anything to do with it’…That’s what I’m talking about with Robert. I said Robert works so hard that if hard work had anything to do with the recovery, he’d set a record. That’s the way he is.”

“But we’re dealing with ligaments, we’re dealing with tendons. You can’t rush that. But around his knee will be the strongest support group you’ll have, and if you have a guy that does that, works that hard, then he’s got a chance to do something special.”

Cap Penalty Could be Blessing in Disguise for Redskins

20121203 jla aq3 254.0 standard 709.0 150x150 Cap Penalty Could be Blessing in Disguise for RedskinsThis NFL off-season has been far from business as usual at Redskins Park. The Redskins have been cash strapped as it pertains to the NFL’s salary cap ever since they had to take a second 18 million dollar cap penalty. To make things tougher this year, the Redskins had several key free agents to re-sign and some contracts that were not very team friendly.

Instead of being hasty and restructuring already bad deals to free up money, the Redskins have been calm, cool and collective in their moves on new free agents as well as their own players. Moving on from the horrible deal DeAngelo Hall was signed to may have been the most important move of the year. Hall was set to make nearly 8 million in 2013 and now is signed to a much more affordable one year deal.

Gone are the days when the Redskins over-payed players who didn’t even fit the teams needs (similar to trying to put a square peg in a round hole). Mike Shanahan has made it a point to pursue players who are affordable and fit the needs the team has. There is still work to do to free up space for the rookies they will draft this year, but that may not be as hard as one might  think when you factor in the new “51 rule”.

The “51 rule” basically states that only the top 51 salaries count against the salary cap. For example, when a player who makes 1 million a year is signed, the player who has the 51st highest salary will fall off the list, thus freeing up money on the back-end. At this point running-back Alfred Morris does not count against next years cap since his salary is near the league minimum. The Redskins can get far enough under the cap to sign their draft picks by restructuring one or perhaps two deals on players who will be around for awhile.

The Redskins were able to bring back 21 of 22 starters (most in the NFL, they only lost Madieu Williams) from a team that won the NFC East last year, the only key player they lost was Lorenzo Alexander (special teams player). Obviously hurting for cap dollars has hindered the teams ability to fill needs, but the cap penalty that kept the Redskins from free spending could in fact be one of the biggest blessings in disguise the franchise has ever seen.

Our friends over at Over the Cap agree, they had this to say about the Redskins heading into the future:

In many ways I think that the cap penalty was a blessing in disguise for the Redskins. For years the Redskins have overspent on mediocre talent and this penalty kept them from doing just that this season. While they have spent more than I would have liked to see they do have 47 under contract in 2014 and only $106 million or thereabouts committed to the cap. Those are very reasonable numbers for a team whose QB will likely begin entering his real prime provided he is healthy.

That said the Skins have work to do if they want to sign their rookies as they are running right on the cap right now. I tend to think some will say that the Redskins will look to get RGIII more weapons in the passing game but the smarter move will be to improve their defense which can upgrade at multiple positions. The defense has 7 starters who are on their contract years and a number of key subs on their final year. Plus the defense is not that good to begin with. The Redskins relied too much on RGIII in 2012 and they need to balance that out somewhat by building a better defense. If the QB is healthy they can get by with some patchwork pieces for the time being as he looked so good last season he doesn’t need all great players around him and he already has the running game to rely on. The trade for RGIII depleted their draft reserves so using what hey have and not getting caught up in trading games again is the teams best chance for success.

The Redskins are moving in the right direction and next year they will have 34+ million in cap space to fill the needs the team will have moving into the future, and RGIII’s prime years.

Redskins Will Look to Recoup Lost Salary Cap Money

484180 10151024241579574 1795371385 n 300x159 Redskins Will Look to Recoup Lost Salary Cap MoneyIt would appear that the Washington Redskins will not go away as it pertains to the salary cap penalties given by the NFL last year that left the team 36 million dollars in the hole. The Redskins have insisted since last year that the process was not over, even after a judge ruled in the NFL’s favor twice.

It would now appear that the Redskins are willing to go to court and try to get a injunction that could delay the beginning of free agency for the league.

“They have a plan,” one person familiar with the team’s thinking said Monday, expressing the opinion that the Redskins “have very good arguments” for restoring their cap space. The person did not say, however, how the team plans to challenge the penalty.

Coach Mike Shanahan and General Manager Bruce Allen have said publicly since the end of the  2012 season that the team is not done challenging the salary cap reduction. But neither has provided details on how the team might do that.

One person with knowledge of the case said last week that any remaining appeal by the Redskins might be “informal.”

The thought is that the Redskins will threaten to sue the league if some, or all, of the salary cap penalties are not returned. They feel as if the cap money was taken unjustly as a result of the team not colluding against the players during the non-capped season that was before last years labor strike.

The Redskins are in a bad spot right now with many players waiting on contracts while the they are reportedly 4 million over the cap. Veteran players DeAngelo Hall (due nearly 8 million next year) and Santana Moss (due nearly 6 million next year) have expressed interest in reworking their respective deals hoping to help the team open up more money.

Players eligible for unrestricted free agency in March include tight end Fred Davis, left guard Kory Lichtensteiger, right tackle Tyler Polumbus and linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, a Pro Bowl selection on special teams. The Redskins’ pending restricted free agents include tight end Logan Paulsen, fullback Darrel Young and linebacker Rob Jackson.

Redskins Hire Former Bronco Keith Burns as New Special Teams Coach

burns Redskins Hire Former Bronco Keith Burns as New Special Teams CoachThe Washington Redskins have found a replacement at special teams coach. Former Denver Bronco Keith Burns is next in line.

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan is the person who gave Burns his first coaching gig (assistant special teams coach) after a career as a player for Shanahan. Burns has been an assistant coach for Denver for the past 6 seasons. The position opened up when long-time special teams coach Danny Smith left to take the same position in Pittsburgh.

Burns is a Virginia native and went to T.C. Williams high school in Alexandria.

He was quoted in 2007 about his thoughts on special teams.

“[Special teams] is all about want-to, and that’s all special teams is about,” Burns said. “If you want to get the job done, you’ll get it done. You’ve got some guys out there that forever reason, felt they were doing their job, but if you go back and look at film, you need to be at where you’re supposed to be at — bottom line. “Everybody has to be accountable on special teams, because we don’t get second down, third down, fourth down. We get one down, and that’s that down on that given play, so you’ve got to go out there and do what is expected of you to make a play and get the guy down.”

He also once said of playing special teams, “I enjoy doing what I do. Football is a young game and at the same time, I am young at heart and that is the feeling that I have always had coming into training camp.”

Burns is expected to be announced as the new special teams coach on Tuesday.

RG3 to Have ACL and LCL Surgery

rgiiiseahawks113a 300x192 RG3 to Have ACL and LCL SurgeryRobert Griffin III will undergo reconstructive knee surgery on his torn anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his right knee.  A time table of six to eight months has been set (barring any setback).

The timetable means RG3 will be ready to play by the beginning of next years football season, according to team sources familiar with the determination made by orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews.A00549F01 238x300 RG3 to Have ACL and LCL Surgery

RG3 was diagnosed late Tuesday with the knee injuries. He suffered a complete tear of the graft that was used to repair the same knee in 2009 during his sophomore year at Baylor University. A team source said Dr. Andrews likely will use a patella graft from Griffin’s left knee to repair the most recent tear.

Griffin will participate in a rehabilitation program that will include focusing on strengthening his quadriceps to help protect and stabilize his knee. Under this projected time frame of surgery, recovery and rehab, Griffin should be able to participate at some level during training camp in August and be ready to open the season in September.

Chris Mortenson from ESPN first reported the news on twitter:

 UPDATED — Wednesday, 1-9-2013, 2:30 pm

RG3′s knee procedure was a success.

Dr. James Andrews performed surgery this morning on Redskins QB Robert Griffin III and released the following statement:

“Robert Griffin III had successful knee surgery early this morning. He had a direct repair of his LCL and a re-do of his previous ACL reconstruction. We expect a full recovery and it is everybody’s hope and belief that due to Robert’s high motivation, he will be ready for the 2013 season.

The goal of his treatment is to give him the best opportunity for a long professional career.”

Redskins vs Cowboys: Five Things to Take From This Game

turkeydayawardrg3 Redskins vs Cowboys: Five Things to Take From This GameThe thanksgiving day game against the Cowboys was perhaps the most satisfying turkey day in quite some time for fans of the Washington Redskins. The Redskins traveled to the stadium known as ‘Jerry World’ to take on their hated rivals, the Cowboys and preceded to take it to the home team 38-31. A game that wasn’t exactly as close as the score would suggest too place with the Redskins delivering a serious blow in a 28 point second quarter.

It would appear as if coach Mike Shanahan took the foot off the peddle a little bit after halftime, which allowed the Cowboys to get back into the game. In a moment when it seemed like Shanahan realized that his offense would have to pick the pace back up, Robert Griffin III threw his first interception in weeks and Dallas was able to score again a few plays later.

Griffin remained poised when he returned to the field after Dallas closed to 7 points and led the Redskins on a nice long sustained drive that ended with a 47 yard Kai Forbath kick that put the Redskins up 38-28. Forbath is now 10-10 on the season and has been the teams most consistent player since being signed early this year. Here are five things we can take from this game.

  1. Robert Griffin III is the truth - No more need for analyst and haters alike to question if this kid can do more than just run the ball, 4 passing touchdown games back to back prove that Griffin is indeed a true franchise qb who can run if he needs to. The most common mistake teams have made against RG3 is they believe that if they can contain his rushing game that they can beat the Redskins, when in fact, Griffin would much rather have the opportunity to throw it deep every play. Griffin’s overall play has him being included in the short list of NFL qb’s both statistically and in leadership categories as well as he was named captain after only nine games and is the clear cut leader in DC. RG3 is 54/71 (76%) 769 yards, ten touchdowns, two interceptions, 27 carries for 202 yards in 3 NFC East games with point totals of 23, 31, and 38.
  2. The Redskins offense has big-play ability – After the Dallas game, the offense now has 10 touchdown plays of 30 yards or more and they also have eight touchdown plays of 59 yards or more. In years past the Redskin simply put didn’t have the play-makers to be capable of this. Robert Griffin III has proven to have unreal play fake ability which has lead to the defenses getting sucked in on plays. The addition of players like Garcon and Aldrick Robinson who clearly are upgrades over last years system have helped as well. Coach Kyle Shanahan has also been on point this year with his play-calling ability in crunch time. This offense is quickly becoming a well oiled machine that is carrying the entire team.
  3. Kai Forbath is clutch – Early this season when former Redskins kicker Billy Cundiff was struggling through his short time with the team, the question was asked over and over again, would the Redskins ever find a quality kicker? Forbath has answered that question quite effectively by going out after getting his shot with the Redskins and being successful on all ten of his attempts this year. Having a kicker who just goes out and kicks and is successful gives the Redskins a reliable piece of the offense that hasn’t been seen in DC since Chip Lohmiller retired.
  4. Santana Moss has become RGIII’s main target – Many thought coming into this season that Santana Moss was going to be an after thought in an offense that signed Josh Morgan and Pierre Garcon in the off-season. Moss, who lost 15 pounds in the off-season, has responded with the most touchdown catches he has had since 2005 and is averaging 14.3 yards per catch, the best he has been at that since 2007. Even though he only had 42 yards on 4 catches against the Cowboys, the yards and catches Moss has been involved with have been in clutch situations. Against Philly, Moss caught a 61 yard bomb that for all intended purposes probably should never have been thrown. Moss responded by jumping over two defenders while making the catch and then dove into the end-zone for the score. The play reminded many of the other Moss, Randy that is, who of course is of no relation to Tanaman.
  5. Playoffs are not out of the question – Now that the Redskins have won two straight games against NFC East opponents, they find themselves in an interesting position. If the New York Giants lose their game this week on Sunday night to the Green Bay Packers it will setup a battle for first place next Monday night at FedEx Field. That’s right fans, a meaningful game that will decide first place in December in the nations capitol is very possible. That Monday night game is the must win of the season because there is little chance that the Redskins could recover if they lose since they would be two games back of NY and the Giants would hold the tie breaker. This is still something that will not come easy to the Redskins but it’s miles away from where the team was just three weeks ago after losing to lowly Carolina and heading into the bye.

*In 2000 alone, the Redskins used a total of five different kickers — Bentley, Conway, Heppner, Husted and Murray. That’s got to be a modern-day record. Which brings us to the newly-signed Kai Forbath, who will be the 19th kicker Washington has turned to since ’94. It’s worth nothing that no other NFL team has used more than 13 kickers during that time frame.

‘Skins Have To Improve On 3rd Downs | NBC4 Washington
“Obviously, it’s an area that we have to get better at,” Shanahan told the Washington Post. “You take a combination of killing those drives, being 1-for-9 on third-down and 0-for-2 in the red zone, it’s truly hard to win a football game. “Saying that, there were a number of positives with the way we ran the football. We make a couple of those third downs, just three or four, and keep drives going, you have a chance to have a dominating day. Still had an opportunity to win, even with those crazy stats as they were. But to beat a good football team, we have to play better than that as a whole.”

Robert Griffin III Practices, Still Not Cleared to Play for Redskins

Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III (or RG3) practiced today, coach Mike Shanahan said “Robert did not take his normal amount of reps, but did take a significant amount.”

RGIII also said that he felt dazed and “out of it” for about 15 minutes or so after the hit he sustained in Sundays game against the Atlanta Falcons, he also said that he hasn’t had any setbacks or symptoms since he left the Redskins locker room that day. Griffin said he tried to get down to the turf too late on the play that resulted in his injury. He also said in  any  similar situation in the future, he will be smarter and get out of bounds or throw the ball away.

Griffin tweeted this message to fans:

Although he is not yet cleared for contact, Griffin remains optimistic that he will play in Sunday’s home game against the 4-1 Minnesota Vikings.   “There’s never a doubt as a player,” Griffin said. Below is a video of Griffin in practice today, courtesy of Andrew Walker of Redskins.com.

Should the Redskins sit Robert Griffin III This Weekend or Play Him?

a2e529aa1331853c5bb047ab628e906f Should the Redskins sit Robert Griffin III This Weekend or Play Him?
If you are a fan of the Washington Redskins and haven’t been stuck in a cave all weekend, you already know that the star quarterback of the burgundy and gold went down with what coach Mike Shanahan described as a “mild” concussion. As in any concussion case in the NFL, Griffin was not allowed back in the game once he showed symptoms of not being fully coherent.

Shanahan went on further to say that Griffin did’nt what quarter it was nor did he know the score of the game. As in all post concussion situations in the NFL, Griffin will have to undergo a series of test to determine if he can play of not. Obviously the Redskins want RG3 in the lineup on game-day, but is it worth it to risk pushing him to fast and risking further injury? Some say yes….while some are saying no. Shanahan said today at his press conference that Griffin was looking fine, no headache, he’s not dizzy or vomiting either which are all symptoms concussion injuries provide.

Those who are saying yes point at the fact that you don’t want Griffin to play scared and that you should send him back out there and hope that he has learned to slide or run out of bounds in those types of situations that he was injured in. While those who say no point at the fact you don’t want to scramble your rookie quarterbacks brain around this early on after the kings ransom we paid for him. Both points are solid so I want to ask you the readers out there just what your opinion is, sound off in this poll and/or comment to give your opinion on this one.
