NFL to Release 2013-14 Schedule on April 18

tempRG3S5 nfl mezz 1280 1024 150x150 NFL to Release 2013 14 Schedule on April 18After a previously scheduled 2013 NFL schedule release show for Tuesday was canceled this past weekend, the NFL has now announced a date for its release.

NFL spokesperson Greg Aiello tweeted Tuesday that the NFL will announce its full schedule Thursday, April 18 at 8 p.m., EST.

The opponents list is already known, the Redskins will play home games versus the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers. The team will go on the road to face the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders.

It’s unknown as of yet just how these games will be set in line on the schedule, the NFL has previously contacted the Redskins in hopes of finding out the possible availability of Robert Griffin III. Redskins fans can expect more prime-time games this year, perhaps in the latter parts of the year so that they are guaranteed that he will play.

The Redskins did not play a divisional opponent until week seven a season ago. That late season scheduling played a major part in the ability of the 2012-13 Redskins to climb back into the NFC East standings and win the division with seven straight wins to end the regular season.

Rob Jackson Suspended for First Four Games

158824131.0 standard 730.0 150x150 Rob Jackson Suspended for First Four GamesWashington Redskins outside linebacker Rob Jackson has been suspended for the first four games of the 2013-14 season according to Washington Post beat reporter Mike Jones.

According to reports, the suspension is for testing positive for a banned substance. Jackson will be able to participate in the team’s off-season, training camp, and preseason games. Rob Jackson was re-signed just last week to a one year deal, early word is Redskins knew about the suspension before the contract was offered.

The Redskins now face another obstacle at the beginning of next years season. Stud Brian Orakpo is making a comeback from a major injury already and the team lost Lorenzo Alexander to free agency as well, making the depth at linebacker pretty thin.

Jackson is coming off of a career year in which he started 14 out of 16 games and made 37 tackles, 4.5 sacks and four interceptions – one returned for a touchdown – and two forced fumbles.

We will have updates as new information becomes available.

RG3 to Have ACL and LCL Surgery

rgiiiseahawks113a 300x192 RG3 to Have ACL and LCL SurgeryRobert Griffin III will undergo reconstructive knee surgery on his torn anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his right knee.  A time table of six to eight months has been set (barring any setback).

The timetable means RG3 will be ready to play by the beginning of next years football season, according to team sources familiar with the determination made by orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews.A00549F01 238x300 RG3 to Have ACL and LCL Surgery

RG3 was diagnosed late Tuesday with the knee injuries. He suffered a complete tear of the graft that was used to repair the same knee in 2009 during his sophomore year at Baylor University. A team source said Dr. Andrews likely will use a patella graft from Griffin’s left knee to repair the most recent tear.

Griffin will participate in a rehabilitation program that will include focusing on strengthening his quadriceps to help protect and stabilize his knee. Under this projected time frame of surgery, recovery and rehab, Griffin should be able to participate at some level during training camp in August and be ready to open the season in September.

Chris Mortenson from ESPN first reported the news on twitter:

 UPDATED — Wednesday, 1-9-2013, 2:30 pm

RG3′s knee procedure was a success.

Dr. James Andrews performed surgery this morning on Redskins QB Robert Griffin III and released the following statement:

“Robert Griffin III had successful knee surgery early this morning. He had a direct repair of his LCL and a re-do of his previous ACL reconstruction. We expect a full recovery and it is everybody’s hope and belief that due to Robert’s high motivation, he will be ready for the 2013 season.

The goal of his treatment is to give him the best opportunity for a long professional career.”

Robert Griffin III has the top Selling Jersey Ever in a Single Season

350x42 Robert Griffin III has the top Selling Jersey Ever in a Single SeasonRedskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III can add top selling jersey of all-time to his list of accomplishment’s according to a report by ESPN reporter Darren Rovell. RG3′s number 10 jersey has sold more than any other jersey since the NFL started tracking jersey sales numbers six years ago.

Griffin’s numbers in sales so far this season are enough to move pass Brett Favre’s jersey sales numbers in 2008 (Jets) and 2009 (Vikings) with 3 1/2 months to spare in the NFL fiscal year (which runs from April 1 to March 31st).

Redskins apparel sales as a whole is up 252 percent since just last year. That number can be accredited to both the wins the Redskins have added this year as well as Robert Griffin III being on the field.

Everything Griffin is endorsing is on fire at the moment, his sock line with Adidas has listed his socks as “sold out”, the socks retail for the price of $20 a pair.

Peyton Manning’s jersey continues to be the second highest sold among other NFL players.

Alfred Morris is Closing in on Redskins Rookie Rushing Record

a70g8609.0 standard 709.0 Alfred Morris is Closing in on Redskins Rookie Rushing Record

As most people in the Redskins community know already, the Redskins have struck gold this season as it pertains to the play of their rookies. Number two overall pick Robert Griffin III is having a rookie season for the ages, and sixth round draft pick Alfred Morris is having perhaps the best season a rookie running back has ever had in DC.

Morris has 982 rushing yards on the season, just 82 yards short of the Redskins rookie record held by Reggie Brooks. Morris will also become the first Redskins running back to gain 1000 yards since 2008 with just 18 more yards on the ground. With twenty-eight more carries Morris will break the Redskins team record for carries in a season by a rookie, currently Mike Thomas owns that record after carrying the ball 235 times in 1975.

Alfred Morris has four 100 yard rushing games this season, no Redskins rookie has ever recorded five. Clinton Portis was the last running back to record more than four 100-yard games in one season (six in 2008). Portis rushed for 1,487 yards and nine touchdowns that year. Morris is on pace to rush for 1,428 yards and nine touchdowns.

It’s hard to believe a talent like Alfred Morris was allowed to slip into the sixth round of any draft after seeing him tear the gridiron up this year. Morris has spent the entire year in the top five of the NFL for rushing yards and has six touchdowns as well to go with a 4.6 yards per carry average.

Morris had this quote during an interview with NFL Network’s “Around The League”  earlier this week.

“I believe in myself,” Morris said. “My work ethic is ridiculous. Me, just as a person, I know what I’m capable of doing. I chose the path less traveled. Not many people could have chose the path to go to [Florida Atlantic] and be able to come into the NFL and do what I’ve done. Nothing I’ve ever gotten on my path was given — I’ve earned everything. And I know how to go out there and earn it, set goals and attain my goals. Just my sheer work ethic and my heart — you can’t measure a man’s heart, and I have a whole lot of heart.”

When asked if he expected to contribute immediately when he was drafted by the Redskins in April he responded by saying:

“Yes I did, but I just didn’t think my opportunity was going to come as soon as it did,” he said. “I thought maybe around the fifth, sixth game, I was going to get to roll in, maybe get in there and get some snaps and start working my way up the depth chart. If you had asked me would I be the starter at the beginning of the year, if I told you ‘Yeah,’ it would be a lie.”

Five Years Later, a Fanbase Still Mourns the Death of Sean Taylor

Untitled 3 Five Years Later, a Fanbase Still Mourns the Death of Sean TaylorThe morning of November 27,2007 was a surreal moment for many of the fans of the Washington Redskins as well as for the loving family of Sean Taylor. That morning we all woke to hear that Taylor, who had been shot the day before in what appeared to be a home invasion robbery gone wrong, had died. Looking beyond the fact that Sean was the best player the Redskins had on their roster at the time, he was also a pillar in the Redskins community and a loving father who had worked hard to change his life from the troubled past it had seen.

What is even worse is the fact that no one in Sean Taylor’s family has been allowed to have closure in this situation. The five young men who were arrested for the murder have yet to see trial as their case continues to be postponed over and over. As of right now, the five are set to go to court on April 5, 2013, some 5 and half years after they were arrested.

Redskins fans will forever remember a player who ascended to the top of the league in just three years as a feared free safety. Those same fans will remember the connection they felt with that young man and the pain of losing him at the age of twenty four as well. Five years later his fans still honor his memory daily, with Facebook pictures, posts and prayers of Sean. In a way, he has become a burgundy and gold angel for all of us to remember and a constant reminder of just how precious life is.

The Washington Redskins had a promotion this summer to name ten new former Redskins to their list of greatest all-time players, and Sean Taylor’s was at the top of that list (video below). Although he didn’t play long enough in the NFL to make the hall of fame, he will forever be enshrined into the hearts of Redskins fans worldwide.

Is RG3 a MVP Candidate?

rg3againstdallas Is RG3 a MVP Candidate?Being a little over half of the way through his rookie season, Robert Griffin III has been unreal this year. So unreal in fact that he is getting serious consideration for the MVP award. RG3 has already won NFC player of the week honors twice this season (the first rookie to win it twice since the award started being handed out in 1984) as well as rookie of the week 5 times. Griffin’s numbers on the year are jaw dropping, and his level of leadership is truly something special to witness.

During the bye week Grffin was appointed captain after having his team mates vote for who they believed deserved it. He has reacted by having two back to back games with 4 touchdowns passing and quarterback ratings of over 140 with only one turnover. When you figure in Griffin’s stats it’s hard to imagine that he would not at least receive some sort of MVP thought. On the season he is 206-305 for (67.5%) for 2504 yards and 16 touchdowns with only four interceptions. Griffin has a quarterback rating of 104.6 and is leading the league in yards per completion with a 8.21 yards per play average and has rushed the ball 99 times for 642 yards (6.5 yards per carry) and six touchdowns.

There are two things that could happen that would almost ensure RG3 of a top three MVP finish and in fact could make him the third rookie in NFL history to win MVP in their rookie season. Cleveland Browns running back, Jim Brown won the MVP award in 1957 as a rookie and Houston Oilers running back Earl Campbell also pulled off the feat in 1978. The first thing would be for the Redskins to make the playoffs, which is a possibility as of now but needs to become a reality for Griffin to be a serious candidate. The other thing that could catch everyone’s eyes would be if RG3 becomes the first member of the 3000/1000 club, meaning 3000 yards passing and 1000 yards rushing. Those numbers are well within Griffin’s grasp and could be had well before the season is over.
