Pierre Garcon and Brian Orakpo are Excited for 2013

The veterans on the Washington Redskins football team are excited for next season.

“We’re growing,” receiver Pierre Garçon told fans during a Mastercard event at Redskins Park. “We’ve got a long of young guys on the team; a lot of young coaches and players.

“We’ve got one year under our belts and we’re continuing to work on our craft, looking over tape from last year.”

After spending last year learning a new playback and searching for his place in the Shanahan scheme, Garcon is ready to flourish in year two.

“Instead of learning everything brand new this year, we’ll be taking a step forward and perfecting it,” he said. “We definitely will continue to grow and be one year smarter, one year more consistent.”

Brian Orakpo, much like Garcon, is also pumped for next year after missing last seasons magical run due to injury.

“It was phenomenal to watch because I’ve been here through the down times,” he said. “Now I see our team growing and rising, having that popularity around the country.”

“We’ve been getting better each year since general manager Bruce Allen and head coach Mike Shanahan took over,” he said. “As far as personnel, as far as tradition and bringing in the right type of guys with the right type of character.”

Orakpo assured fans that he is 100 percent recovered from his pectoral surgery and is looking forward to full participation in OTAs and looking ahead to training camp.

“I’m very excited because we won the division last year and went to the playoffs for the first time in a long time,” he said. “We can build off that to make the playoffs be a consistent thing every single year.”

Pierre Garcon Talks About his Injury,RG3 and Kirk Cousins

Garconfangs 150x150 Pierre Garcon Talks About his Injury,RG3 and Kirk CousinsWashington Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon was on NFL AM on Thursday morning and was asked:

You played with Peyton Manning, now you have played with Robert Griffin III. Similarities? Differences? And do you think Robert can be as prolific, or as good as Peyton Manning?

Garcon replied:  “He can be just as good as Peyton. Peyton is very skilled with his arm, but Robert is skilled with his arm and his legs and that’s what makes him more dynamic and more dangerous. They are very similar, quarterbacks are natural  leaders, they take control of the huddle and in meetings and communicate with offensive lineman as well as receivers and running backs.

They are both good but Robert’s gonna be really good…just as good as Peyton.” Kinda sounded like Pierre stopped just short of saying RG3 will be better, Peyton and him are still close friends.

Asked about RG3′s injury, he responded with “We want him back for week one, but we don’t want him to push too hard, he’s going to have a great future and a long career. He’s gotta do what’s right for him. He’s been through the fire, now he understands it.”

Garcon went on to say about his injury “I’ll (Garcon) be healthy enough to play. I can’t say I will be 100%, but I will be back out there. I will be rehabbing and doing whatever the trainers let me do. We won’t try to win a Superbowl in April or anything. We will just try to move ahead.”

Asked how might things be different with Kirk Cousins in the huddle, he responded with “It certainly will be different because Kirk is a pocket quarterback, with Robert we have to keep our heads on a swivel and always alert cause the play is never dead, he’s always looking to get that extra yard or extra throw and extend the play as much as he can. But with Kirk we are going to just have to what we can, he can scramble out of the pocket some if he has too but he will do a great job for us.”

When asked about the Redskins record when he is on the field he responded with “It was nothing I did in particular, it was more coach Shanahan, Mike and Kyle, called great plays and I just did my part. They brought me over her to make plays and win and that’s what I take pride in doing. It’s all up to the coaches to call the plays. Without Robert and Alfred there is no 9-1, the offensive line, the running backs, we need everything. We have a great, young offense and a young team to challenge the NFL. Fred led the team in receiving a year ago,  Alfred is a 1600 yard back,  Robert is a Pro Bowl quarterback,  I’ll  just fit in where ever I can. We are itching at the top of the NFL and we think we have that potential, we are young too.”

Top Five Offensive Redskins Players of the 2012 Season

rg3againstdallas 150x150 Top Five Offensive Redskins Players of the 2012 Season

1- Robert Griffin III

For nearly 20 years the Washington Redskins searched for a franchise quarterback who could lead them back to glory, they found it in 2012. Griffin ushered in a new era of football in DC. The speedy RG3 gave coach Mike Shanahan and assistant coach Kyle Shanahan the dynamics to unleash an offense that defenses in the NFL had no clue how to defend. Griffin completed 258 passes while attempting 393, for a 65.6 completion percentage, 3,200 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions.Robert’s passing rating was third best in the NFL at 102.4, and he broke the NFL rushing record for a rookie quarterback with 815 yards and seven touchdowns while only playing 15 games for the Redskins.

Robert Griffin III has the distinction of leading the league in yards per play passing (8.14 yards per play) and rushing (6.8 yards per carry) in the 2012 season. The future is unknown for Griffin at the moment after suffering ACL and LCL tears in his right knee during the playoffs this year, but he is determined to make a comeback and be better than ever before in 2013. His recovery time is projected to be 6-8 months, which would be just in time for the 2013 season.

2- Alfred Morris

It would not be completely fair to say that Alfred Morris is the “second” best, it was more like RG3 was 1A and Morris is 1B. While Griffin did in fact change the way teams view the Redskins, clearly Alfred Morris was the work-horse back that fueled the Redskins run.

Teams were completely shocked as week after week they set their game-plan up to stop Griffin and then Alfred would tear them up. Morris rushed 335 times for 1,613 yards (Redskins franchise record) and 13 touchdowns in 2012. Alfred rushed for over 100+ yards on seven different occasions, including 200 yards against the rival Cowboys in the last game of the season. The 24-year old Morris finished second in the NFL in rushing to only Adrian Peterson, who finished 9 yards shy of the NFL record.

3- Trent Williams

Many questions loomed over Trent Williams heading into the 2012 season. Williams was suspended from the Redskins for the final four games of the 2011 campaign for failing a drug screen. Williams came out on a mission and with the intention to make up for his past wrong doings.

Trent has risen to being one of the top left tackles in all of football in the last few months and is the main line of protection for RG3 and the high octane Redskins offense. Going forward the 24-year old will look to be the leader of the offensive line for years to come as he is already a team captain.

4- Pierre Garcon

The Washington Redskins had a collection of stats that will make even the most pessimistic fan happy in 2012. One of the biggest stats that has fell between the cracks is the record the Redskins had in games Pierre Garcon started in the regular season. The Redskins were in fact 9-1 in those games as Garcon missed 6 games this year due to injury. Garcon is still contemplating surgery on his injured toe this off-season, he would like to avoid the procedure altogether if possible.

Pierre finished the year with 44 catches for 633 yards and four touchdowns, in only 10 games. Many who questioned the pickup of Garcon in the off-season quickly changed their minds once they saw the way Pierre made plays after the catch this year.

5- Kai Forbath

Since Chip Lohmiller left Washington many years ago the Redskins have had issues at place kicker ever since. Truth is, no kicker the Redskins have employed has been able to stay consistent or come through in clutch situations. After Billy Cundiff started the 2012 year off missing five of his first 12 kicks, the Redskins decided to sign another kicker.

The result of the kicker search turned up Kai Forbath who had never attempted a kick in the NFL and had spent the 2011 season on the non-injured, non-playing list for the Dallas Cowboys. Forbath responded by kicking a 50 yarder on his first attempt. Kai went on to successfully kick his first 17 in a row (an NFL record) before missing his first kick in the season finale against Dallas. Forbath also was good on 33 extra point attempts this season and scored 84 points in only 11 games.

Redskins win 6th Game in a Row….WE WANT DALLAS!!!

london Redskins win 6th Game in a Row....WE WANT DALLAS!!!
The Washington Redskins held on Sunday to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-20 and improve to 9-6 on the year. The game ended on a forward pass that Nick Foles could not get back to the line of scrimmage, which resulted in a ten second runoff for illegal procedure. Being as there was only one second remaining  the game ended.

The Redskins, lead by Ryan Kerrigan’s two sacks and fumble recovery, are the hottest team in the NFC right now. Rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III looked good in his first outing since injuring his right knee against Baltimore two weeks ago. Griffin was 16-24 for 198 yards and two touchdowns. Griffin threw his 5th interception on the year on a tip pass late in the game.

Alfred Morris rushed twenty-one times for 91 yards and also scored his 10th touchdown of the year, which tied him for the Redskins rookie record with Charlie Taylor. Pierre Garcon had 7 catches for 89 yards and Josh Morgan and Santana Moss both scored touchdowns for the Redskins.

With the win, the Redskins have won 6 games in a row and now will face the Dallas Cowboys next week at home, a game with extreme playoff implications. The game will be played on Sunday Night Football (NBC) with the kickoff time being 8:20.

The Redskins will be playing for their first NFC East title since 1999.

Pierre Garcon Brings Wins to the Redskins

garcongiants Pierre Garcon Brings Wins to the RedskinsWashington Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon was thought of as a product of Peyton Manning before this year. Truth is, Garcon has a unique set of abilities that indeed make him stand out from the pack.

In Indianapolis Pierre was in the shadow of Reggie Wayne, a place he likely would have never left had he stayed with the Colts. This past off-season many “experts” thought Washington had lost their minds when they signed him to a five year deal worth $42.5 million with $20.5 million guaranteed, including an $11 million signing bonus for a player they viewed was not a number one receiver  Those same “experts” are now praising the fact that the Redskins are in fact 6-1 when he is in the starting lineup.

Garcon had quite the impressive debut with the Redskins week one when he caught an 88-yard touchdown pass from rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III and ended the game with four catches for 109 yards. On the 88-yard touchdown Garcon injured his toe, that injury has turned out to be problematic causing him to miss six games this season.

On the season, Pierre Garcon has been targeted 41 times for 28 catches for 437 yards (an average of 15.6 per catch) and four touchdowns in just seven games. The main thing that Garcon brings to the table is his ability to pick up yards after the catch. This season Pierre has 217 yards after the catch (or YAC), which is well over 50% of his total yards on the season. His big play ability gives the Washington Redskins a reliable target as well as a threat to score at any moment.

Garcon caught the touchdown pass Sunday that brought the Redskins within two points of the Baltimore Ravens (followed by a Kirk Cousins two point conversion to tie the score).

Who knows just how things may have worked out for the Washington Redskins if Pierre Garcon were able to play this entire year injury free. At this point, Redskins fans are just enjoying what he brings to the table…more wins and consistency during a playoff push.

Garcon was on ESPN pretty much all day on Tuesday, here are a few videos from his time in studio.

“That one play’s not going to define us as a unit,” said Williams, a nine-year veteran who was supposed to be Washington’s No. 3 safety before Tanard Jackson was suspended for the season after another failed drug test. “It’s not going to define me as a player. It was a lack of execution on everybody’s part. We didn’t do what we were supposed to do. The longer you play this game, the longer you’re in this league, you’re going to have moments like that. You learn from it and capitalize on the opportunity in front of us.”

The Redskins Blog | Mrs. Shanahan On Redskins’ Return Game
“He obviously made a bad decision,” Shanahan said of Banks.  ”My wife told me that wasn’t a good decision.” Shanahan got a good chuckle out of the media, something he enjoys doing with his patented deadpan delivery. All joking aside, Shanahan made clear that Banks needs to make better decisions, or his job as returner is in jeopardy. “Brandon by all means knows that was a poor decision so you just can’t make those mistakes,”  Shanahan said.  ”You have to eliminate those mistakes and if you make too many of them then you are not returning punts or kicks anymore.”

Griffin III was named the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week, an award that comes with a $2,000 donation in each of the winning players’ names to their local offices of Junior Achievement. It’s the second time Griffin III has won FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week award, so that means he’s sent $4,000 to the Washington, D.C., Junior Achievement office just based on his top-notch performances. The FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week distinction was the third award Griffin III has won this week alone. Griffin III today was also voted as the NFL Rookie of the Week — already for the fifth time this season. Then, on Wednesday, he was given his second NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month award.

Tuck says Redskins O won’t go anywhere without RG3 | ProFootballTalk
Giants defensive end Justin Tuck said as impressive as RG3 has been, the Redskins aren’t going any place he doesn’t take them. “I think in this offense, it is all predicated on the quarterback,” Tuck said, via Newsday’s Tom Rock. “If RG3 stays healthy, I think this offense is going to continue to roll. “But the thing about it is, who wants their franchise quarterback getting hit every play? Every game like that? I think that is what it is going to come down to.”

Redskins injury report: Fletcher, Williams limited | WashingtonExaminer.com
“You keep your fingers crossed,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. “Both have significant injuries and you’re hoping over the next few days that they’ll be able to go.” Williams has said a couple times this week that he expects to play Monday. Fletcher said Friday that he’ll play if he feels he can help. Fletcher spent last week in a walking boot, but started vs. Dallas. Fletcher said he was concerned he’d be able to play in that game, but said the ankle doesn’t necessarily feel any different than a week ago.

Redskins Final Thoughts: Week 13 | WashingtonExaminer.com
I talked to one person this week who is very familiar with both the Giants and the Redskins and someone I greatly respect. His take? If the Redskins don’t turn the ball over, they will blow the Giants out. Why? Because of how well the Redskins handle Giants QB Eli Manning (and because of QB Robert Griffin III). We’ll see what happens, but thought you might like to know.

Fletcher plays on and on and on…
“It will apply every time he’s hurt because you know what type of mindset that he has, his recovery time,” Shanahan said. “Over 200-plus consecutive games gives you an idea. The chances are, he will be ready. But he is quite sore.”

DeAngelo Hall agrees with Victor Cruz: Redskins still have work to do
“In this league, you’ve got to prove it. We haven’t proved it,” Hall said. “Even though We’ve beaten them two out of the last three times, you still got to prove it. You’ve got to prove it. Even though we’ve matched up well against them, we haven’t matched up against other teams in this league. I can’t argue with him right now. They won the last one, and they’ve got two Super Bowl rings over the last [five] years. So, we’ve got to keep working. We’ve got to keep working, keep grinding. We’ll see what he says after the game.”

Pierre Garcon and RGIII want to be like Manning and Harrison
“Playing with Peyton was a great experience,” Garcon said. “[I] was learning a lot, seeing what those guys did to win, the attitude, the work ethic on and off the field. And right now we’re trying to get that same thing going that Peyton and Marvin had with me and RG. We’re trying to do a lot of communication, a lot of talking on and off the field, watching film together, talking about defenses and plays. And we’re trying to instill that work ethic that we had in Indianapolis down here in D.C.
