Robert Griffin III Wins NFL Rookie of the Year (Video)
Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was awarded the Associated Press NFL Rookie of the Year Award this past weekend. RG3 walked to the stage with only a very small limp after just having undergone major knee surgery on January 9. Griffin says he’s been off of crutches for two weeks now and is way ahead of schedule with his rehab.
“It’s a truly a blessing to be up here and be able to stand, first and foremost,” Griffin told the crowd at Mahalia Jackson Theater in New Orleans. “I had a tough injury there at the end of the season.”

RG3 to Have ACL and LCL Surgery
Robert Griffin III will undergo reconstructive knee surgery on his torn anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his right knee. A time table of six to eight months has been set (barring any setback).
The timetable means RG3 will be ready to play by the beginning of next years football season, according to team sources familiar with the determination made by orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews.
RG3 was diagnosed late Tuesday with the knee injuries. He suffered a complete tear of the graft that was used to repair the same knee in 2009 during his sophomore year at Baylor University. A team source said Dr. Andrews likely will use a patella graft from Griffin’s left knee to repair the most recent tear.
Griffin will participate in a rehabilitation program that will include focusing on strengthening his quadriceps to help protect and stabilize his knee. Under this projected time frame of surgery, recovery and rehab, Griffin should be able to participate at some level during training camp in August and be ready to open the season in September.
Chris Mortenson from ESPN first reported the news on twitter:
Redskins QB Robert Griffin III will undergo total reconstruction of knee for complete tear of ACL and LCL. Recovery projection: 6-8 mos.

RG3′s knee procedure was a success.
R. Griffin’s surgery is completed, according to person close to situation. Griffin had both his LCL and ACL repaired.

Dr. James Andrews performed surgery this morning on Redskins QB Robert Griffin III and released the following statement:
“Robert Griffin III had successful knee surgery early this morning. He had a direct repair of his LCL and a re-do of his previous ACL reconstruction. We expect a full recovery and it is everybody’s hope and belief that due to Robert’s high motivation, he will be ready for the 2013 season.
The goal of his treatment is to give him the best opportunity for a long professional career.”

Robert Griffin III has the top Selling Jersey Ever in a Single Season
Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III can add top selling jersey of all-time to his list of accomplishment’s according to a report by ESPN reporter Darren Rovell. RG3′s number 10 jersey has sold more than any other jersey since the NFL started tracking jersey sales numbers six years ago.
Griffin’s numbers in sales so far this season are enough to move pass Brett Favre’s jersey sales numbers in 2008 (Jets) and 2009 (Vikings) with 3 1/2 months to spare in the NFL fiscal year (which runs from April 1 to March 31st).
Redskins apparel sales as a whole is up 252 percent since just last year. That number can be accredited to both the wins the Redskins have added this year as well as Robert Griffin III being on the field.
Everything Griffin is endorsing is on fire at the moment, his sock line with Adidas has listed his socks as “sold out”, the socks retail for the price of $20 a pair.
Peyton Manning’s jersey continues to be the second highest sold among other NFL players.

Is RG3 a MVP Candidate?
Being a little over half of the way through his rookie season, Robert Griffin III has been unreal this year. So unreal in fact that he is getting serious consideration for the MVP award. RG3 has already won NFC player of the week honors twice this season (the first rookie to win it twice since the award started being handed out in 1984) as well as rookie of the week 5 times. Griffin’s numbers on the year are jaw dropping, and his level of leadership is truly something special to witness.
During the bye week Grffin was appointed captain after having his team mates vote for who they believed deserved it. He has reacted by having two back to back games with 4 touchdowns passing and quarterback ratings of over 140 with only one turnover. When you figure in Griffin’s stats it’s hard to imagine that he would not at least receive some sort of MVP thought. On the season he is 206-305 for (67.5%) for 2504 yards and 16 touchdowns with only four interceptions. Griffin has a quarterback rating of 104.6 and is leading the league in yards per completion with a 8.21 yards per play average and has rushed the ball 99 times for 642 yards (6.5 yards per carry) and six touchdowns.
There are two things that could happen that would almost ensure RG3 of a top three MVP finish and in fact could make him the third rookie in NFL history to win MVP in their rookie season. Cleveland Browns running back, Jim Brown won the MVP award in 1957 as a rookie and Houston Oilers running back Earl Campbell also pulled off the feat in 1978. The first thing would be for the Redskins to make the playoffs, which is a possibility as of now but needs to become a reality for Griffin to be a serious candidate. The other thing that could catch everyone’s eyes would be if RG3 becomes the first member of the 3000/1000 club, meaning 3000 yards passing and 1000 yards rushing. Those numbers are well within Griffin’s grasp and could be had well before the season is over.

This topic was a hot discussion this week on ESPN’s First Take as Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith both talked over the thought of RG3 winning the MVP award. Catch the video below.

Robert Griffin III Wins NFC Player of the Week Honors, Again
Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III has been named NFC player of the week for the second time this season (the first was against the Saints in week 1). Griffin’s 14-15, 200 yard, 4 td performance was just the second time in the history of the league that a rookie scored a perfect qb rating of 158.3.

— Randall Liu (@RLiuNFL) November 21, 2012
Here are some solid facts from Redskins.com.
- Last Redskin to win Offensive Player of the Week twice in one season: Santana Moss (Weeks 2 and 16, 2005)
- Last Redskins QB to win Offensive Player of the Week twice in one season: Brad Johnson (Weeks 2 and 4, 1999)

- Griffin III is the first rookie quarterback to win Player of the Week two times since the award began in 1984.
By taking in the information above, it’s safe to say that this doesn’t happen very often — especially for a rookie.
This week’s NFC Offensive Player of the Week distinction is just the latest in a slew of awards Griffin III has earned so far this season, which include:
- NFC Offensive Player of the Week (twice)
- NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month
- Pepsi Max Offensive Rookie of the Week (three times)
- FedExAir Player of the Week
Griffin III is also a candidate — again — for the Offensive Rookie of the Week. Fans can vote online until Friday at 3 p.m. by clicking here.
Here’s a few more nuggets about Griffin III before we part ways:
- Last week, Griffin III became the first rookie in NFL history with 200 passing yards, 75 rushing yards and 4 passing TDs in a single game.
- With 145 passing yards Thursday vs. the Dallas Cowboys, Griffin III can break Norm Snead’s team record for passing yards by a rookie (2,337, set in 1961).
- Griffin III is 94 rushing yards shy of breaking Cam Newton’s NFL record for rushing yards in a season by a rookie quarterback (706).
