RG3 Goes to the Kentucky Derby

00rg3 1024x577 RG3 Goes to the Kentucky DerbyWashington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is literally all over the place.

Just last week he was at the White House Correspondents dinner after party, and this weekend he is at the Kentucky Derby.

This kid knows how to enjoy life, and might I add, look good while doing it.

In an interview with NBC, Griffin said he was putting “a small amount of money on ‘Palace Malice’”  the number 10 horse (22-1 odds) to win the race.

Griffin was also asked how his knee was doing in which he responded, “It’s doing great, of course everyone has seen the tape of me doing ‘jumping jacks’, I’m just taking it a day at a time.”

RG3: “People say DC’s my Town not Obama’s, I Don’t Look at it That way, But I can see What They’re Saying”

Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III (or RG3) is being featured in an upcoming ESPN “The Magazine” article written by J.R. Moehringer.

The interview, which is over 5000 words in length, details some of the moments of Griffin’s young life as well as his playing career.

The following are a collection of excerpts from the article:

- In the fall of 2009, just when Briles and the fans in Baylor Stadium were starting to dream big, Griffin went down. Anterior cruciate ligament. The whole Baylor community took it hard (overnight, the stadium was half-empty, Griffin says), but Griffin took it to heart. He personalized the injury, made it his fault. “I saw how many people I let down,” he says. “My head coach cried. My offensive coordinator cried. My offensive line coach cried.”

Then he saw, beneath their sorrow, a genuine concern for him. “Not even worried about the season — worried about me as a person & I saw that in their eyes.”

It broke his spirit. It lifted his heart. Until that moment, RG3 says, he’d never embraced football. He’d always played full speed, all out, but he’d never cherished the game, not until it was taken from him. “I didn’t love football before I tore my ACL. When I came back, I loved it.”

-  He insists that as last season wore on, he became more — you should forgive the word — conservative. Take Week 14, he says. He was leveled, laid out, by Baltimore’s Haloti Ngata, a behemoth descended from the Kingdom of Tonga who, that day, descended from the sky. The hit caused Griffin’s leg to fly straight up in the air, then whipsaw from side to side, like the needle on a lie detector.

“You’ll never see anyone get injured like that again,” Griffin says. “All 350 pounds of Ngata, all the massiveness that is Haloti Ngata, running at you full speed, and as I’m getting down he hits my leg.” Just a “freak” thing, he adds. He was trying to stop running, trying to slide. What more do people want? Everyone harasses Griffin to change his game, he says, “but what everyone doesn’t realize is — I did change my game.”

- Kirk Cousins, the Redskins’ talented backup, who relieved Griffin in the Baltimore game and again in the Seattle game, recalls eavesdropping on an intense sideline conference between Griffin and Shanahan: “Robert, you’re clearly limping, you’re not at full strength, do you think you need to come out? And I’m not quoting anybody, I’m just paraphrasing. And Robert’s attitude was: I’m okay. I understand there’s a limp, but I’m going to be okay. I brought us this far, I want to finish this thing.”

Cousins adds: “I think it was tough for Coach Shanahan to tell him no. And it was tough for Robert to back down. Both of them were in a tough spot, each guy’s word against the other.”

- “If I had another incident like the Ngata hit, I’m out of the game. You pull yourself out at that point. You learn from your mistakes.”

What about the Seahawks game? “I don’t feel like playing against the Seahawks was a mistake. But I see the mistake in it.”

Come again?

“With what happened and how everything was running — you take me out. If that happened again next year, I’d come out of the game and sit until I was 100 percent healthy.”

- When Griffin woke in the operating room, he once again saw his entire football family with tears in their eyes. The family members were different — Dan Snyder, Redskins owner; Bruce Allen, general manager; Tony Wyllie, head of public relations — but Griffin’s feeling of gratitude was the same. “It’s tough for professional athletes to trust anyone in this business,” he says. “When the owner of the team, the general manager of the team, the PR director of the team, they’re all there, that’s how you know: I can trust these guys.”

- “A lot of people have said DC’s my town, it’s not Obama’s town,” RG3 says. “Obama’s the second most popular person in the city. I don’t look at it that way. But I can see what they’re saying.”

- The hair, he says, began as a mild rebellion. His parents decreed that he couldn’t wear it long until he left their house, so he grew it out the minute he left. His sister braided it the first time; his mother braids it best. Now it’s his signature. He couldn’t cut it if he wanted to. He’d be the Felicity of football. “People associate me with braids,” he says. “It lets people with long hair say: Look, my long hair does not define me. Just because I have long hair and I’m African-American doesn’t mean I smoke weed.”

RG3 Thanks Redskins Fans for Coming to Draft Day Party

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III made an appearance at the 2013 Redskins Draft Day Party at FedEx Field this past Saturday and was greeting by exited Redskins fans.

RG3 decided he wanted to show the Redskins faithful just how far he had come by doing jumping jacks on stage. (That video can be seen by clicking HERE)

Griffin has fond memories from last season, “You’ve got to start with the last game against the Cowboys,” Griffin said. “Alfred Morris runs for 200 yards, does a great job. Then we go back to the game on Thanksgiving and we spanked the Cowboys.”

“We made Cowboys Stadium our home. And that’s what we want to continue to do,” he said.

“We’re having a great draft right now, and I’m all in for Week 1, just like you guys are right now,” Griffin said. “You guys saw me jumping. I mean, I can run a little bit. I’ll be good. No worries. I’ll take it slow, but in the same time, I’ll be ready to go.”

The Redskins open the season against the Philadelphia Eagles in a Monday Night Football NFC east rivalry match-up.

Redskins Injury/Rehab Updates

mike shanahan 150x150 Redskins Injury/Rehab UpdatesWashington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan on Wednesday updated the statuses of several players recovering from surgeries.

“We’ve got a lot of guys with treatment right now, a number of guys that will be question marks with OTAs [next month] because they’re going through rehab, which you typically go through this time of year. But I’m hoping everybody should be ready for summer camp [in late July]. There are still a couple guys that are question marks, but I think collectively we’re pretty close to being full go.”

All quotes are attributed to Mike Shanahan…

QB Robert Griffin III (right knee ACL, LCL, medial meniscus): “I think what players do, and anybody does, trainers, they tell you to look at the muscles and you see his quads and his hamstrings. You see him working out with weights, his flexibility, how hard he’s working. Everybody’s very optimistic and they say he’s ahead of schedule.

“Human nature is you have to let a ligament heal. You cannot force that. It’s a time frame that you’ve got to make sure that you don’t push it too hard, and that’s all we’re saying. We want him to work as hard as he can. Do what you can with the muscles around the knee but don’t do anything too quick because we don’t want to set it back. We want it to heal first.”

TE Fred Davis (left Achilles’ tendon): “Fred has made some strides. I think we’ll find out in OTA’s exactly where he’s at but he’s feeling good.

DE Adam Carriker (right quadriceps tendon): “I can’t give you a percentage—I can’t say if it’s 70 or 80—but he’s making strides. It’s much better than it was a month ago, so we’re going to let the due process take care of itself and I’ll update you the more I know.”

ILB London Fletcher (elbow, left ankle): “The elbow surgery went well. The ankle surgery went well. With the elbow, it’s relieved a lot of tension. I understand that with [head athletic trainer] Larry [Hess]. The ankle, he has already gotten in the weight room working out so, he’s doing well.”

RB Roy Helu (left foot/big toe): “He’s still a little bit sore. I still think he’ll be able to go here over the next couple weeks. He’s not 100 percent but he’s close to it. He did set it back about a week ago but according to Larry, he still thinks there’s a chance, so we’ll wait and see.”

SS Reed Doughty (foot; same injury as Helu, Shanahan said): “Reed’s close to 100 percent right now. I think he’ll be able to go.”

OLB Brian Orakpo (left pectoral muscle): “Rak’s 100 percent.”

ILB Keenan Robinson (right pectoral muscle): “He’s doing pretty good. He’s doing pretty good. Just like ‘Rak, it takes a little time. …I’d say Keenan, at least the doctors think he’ll be ready to go in about a month, so we’re hoping to have him ready for OTA’s.”

Mike Shanahan on RG3 Comeback: “Mother Nature Will Take Its Course”

When Mike Shanahan took to the podium earlier today for his press conference, he had one message to send to all of those who have been wondering about the health concerns of playing Robert Griffin III too early after returning from a serious knee injury. The Redskins are going to do everything in their power to not rush him back to soon.

On how surprised he is with what he’s seeing from quarterback Robert Griffin III:

“The one thing I don’t want to do is I don’t want to see anything too quick. I mean we’re dealing with an ACL. That takes time. Mother Nature is going to take its course. The thing that you love about Robert is he’s working the muscles around it. He loves to work. He does everything we ask him to do and then some to get himself ready.”

“There’s a time frame and there’s Mother Nature that’s involved and that ligament takes time to heal, so we’ve got to make sure that he doesn’t go too quick, because we don’t want him to do anything too quickly because he could set it back. When you work as hard as he does and your muscles are strong around the ligament, sometimes guys have the tendency to go too quick and we’re going to try to make sure that he doesn’t.”

On if he consistently talks to RGIII about not rushing through rehab:

“Well, I think what players do, and anybody does, trainers, they tell you to look at the muscles and you see his quads and his hamstrings. You see him working out with weights, his flexibility, how hard he’s working. Everybody’s very optimistic and they say he’s ahead of schedule.”

On Griffin III’s injury and what collectively he and the staff would have done differently:

“I think it’s been talked about enough. What we’re going to do is make sure Robert’s 100 percent. I get a feel with people the more I’m around them. I think players get more of a feeling for me, but the one thing you want to make sure of is how somebody practices gives them an opportunity to play in the game. If somebody does, what you think, someone might get injured, it’s your gut to take somebody out. Sometimes it changes from year to year. I know mine does with different players.”

“Every situation is different and sometimes you make the right call. There are times you don’t, but at the end of the day you’re always hoping that you’ll learn from your mistakes, whatever they are. At the end of this year, when we go into next year, one thing we want to make sure of is Robert never plays if he’s not 100 percent, so if he does tell me something, I’m not going to believe him this year compared to last year…That was a joke. That was a joke, I think [said while laughing]. But anyway, we’ll have fun with that.”

On what he meant when he said Griffin III will “set a record” for coming back:

“I didn’t say that. You’ve got to quote me the whole saying. I said, ‘If hard work had anything to do with it’…That’s what I’m talking about with Robert. I said Robert works so hard that if hard work had anything to do with the recovery, he’d set a record. That’s the way he is.”

“But we’re dealing with ligaments, we’re dealing with tendons. You can’t rush that. But around his knee will be the strongest support group you’ll have, and if you have a guy that does that, works that hard, then he’s got a chance to do something special.”
