Bacarri Rambo’s Idol was Sean Taylor

431865 10151659967254574 2046710501 n Bacarri Rambos Idol was Sean TaylorAs many of us know, Sean Taylor was a special individual who inspired many. One of those “many” as it turns out is one of the newest members of the Washington Redskins.

Sixth round pick Bacarri Rambo’s idol was the late Sean Taylor.

In an interview at the Senior Bowl with Fanspeak.com‘s Steve Shoup, Rambo was asked “Were there safeties that you looked up to when you were younger?”

Rambo replied, “I used to look up to Sean Taylor. Rest in peace to a great man, he was a great player. I really respected him, and  looked up to him.”

“Right now (out of active players), I’d say Ed Reed. I just like his playing style. I just try to do certain things like him, like reading the quarterback and just playing certain types of coverages. And just having that knack for the ball.

When asked The Redskins need some safety help. What would it mean to you to be drafted by a team that a guy you idolized played for?”

Rambo replied, “It would mean a lot to me. It would be just such an honor just to play for them. I would really enjoy playing for them. It’s a great city and I know that I get a lot of love and support from a great fan base.”

When asked What’s the one part of Sean Taylor’s game that you really try to model yourself after?”

Rambo replied, “His hard-hitting. He had great instincts and he was a hard hitter. So that’s something that I tried to put on the field along with the great ball skills by Ed Reed. So that’s two combinations of safeties that I tried to put together and bring to the table for my team.”

If you take a minute and watch his highlights you can see the similarities in how they play, in all respect to Rambo, he’s no where close yet to filling the shoes of either of those men, but he has good size, an athletic skill and a decent set of hands, all of which are  factors that will play in his favor as competes for playing time with the Redskins.

One thing I will give him, he already has the best name ever for safety.

When asked if he believed his name was a great name for a rangy, hard-hitting safety, Rambo replied, “Yeah, it’s pretty nice. Thanks to my dad for all that. For chaining me to that. So, I give all the credit to my dad.”

Phillip Thomas Says “I’m Going to be the Steal of the Draft”

37048 10151659611064574 1640807303 n Phillip Thomas Says Im Going to be the Steal of the DraftWashington Redskins 4th round draft choice Phillip Thomas spoke with the media after being drafted 119th by the Redskins.

On slipping in the draft….

“I feel I’m going to be the steal of the draft.”

The Redskins selected two players who led the Football Bowl Subdivision in interceptions over the past two seasons (David Amerson, 13 in 2011; Phillip Thomas, eight in 2012). Safety Bacarri Rambo was second in the FBS in interceptions in 2011 with eight.

“It’s just instincts, man,” Thomas said of the interceptions. “We changed our whole defense around last season and in a 3-4 defense and that created a lot of pressure and do a lot of different things. I was able to just play a little looser and use my instincts and be the ballhawk I always knew I was.”

On if he would rather play free safety or strong safety…

“My style allows me to play both,” Thomas said. “I’m great at getting the ball when it’s in the air. Also, I did a lot of things as far as blitzing and playing in the box. I feel I can do both. I’m an interchangeable safety who can make plays in the box and play in the [deep middle] and make plays in the air.”

Phillip Thomas is a life-long Redskins fan, when asked who his favorite player was he replied, “Sean Taylor.”

“To watch him play the game as aggressive as he was and as great a player as he was…” Thomas said. “He studied film and did everything he had to do and was a perfectionist at the game.”

Five Years Later, a Fanbase Still Mourns the Death of Sean Taylor

Untitled 3 Five Years Later, a Fanbase Still Mourns the Death of Sean TaylorThe morning of November 27,2007 was a surreal moment for many of the fans of the Washington Redskins as well as for the loving family of Sean Taylor. That morning we all woke to hear that Taylor, who had been shot the day before in what appeared to be a home invasion robbery gone wrong, had died. Looking beyond the fact that Sean was the best player the Redskins had on their roster at the time, he was also a pillar in the Redskins community and a loving father who had worked hard to change his life from the troubled past it had seen.

What is even worse is the fact that no one in Sean Taylor’s family has been allowed to have closure in this situation. The five young men who were arrested for the murder have yet to see trial as their case continues to be postponed over and over. As of right now, the five are set to go to court on April 5, 2013, some 5 and half years after they were arrested.

Redskins fans will forever remember a player who ascended to the top of the league in just three years as a feared free safety. Those same fans will remember the connection they felt with that young man and the pain of losing him at the age of twenty four as well. Five years later his fans still honor his memory daily, with Facebook pictures, posts and prayers of Sean. In a way, he has become a burgundy and gold angel for all of us to remember and a constant reminder of just how precious life is.

The Washington Redskins had a promotion this summer to name ten new former Redskins to their list of greatest all-time players, and Sean Taylor’s was at the top of that list (video below). Although he didn’t play long enough in the NFL to make the hall of fame, he will forever be enshrined into the hearts of Redskins fans worldwide.

RIP Sean Michael Maurice Taylor

As most fans of the burgundy and gold already know, the Washington Redskins had their ‘Redskins 10 for 80′ contest for the fans to vote on exactly who they believed should be added to the all-time Redskins team. A few years back the first 70 were announced, but this year in honor of 80 years in existence, the team decided to add ten more players to the list.

The team announced the winners at the 51st annual Redskins Welcome Home Luncheon Friday. The new add-on’s to list include vital pieces in the Redskins front office during the Superbowl years in the 80′s and 90′s as well as all-time greats who were very deserving of the honor.
