NFL Players Union Approves New Collective Bargaining Agreement

The NFL players union voted on and approved (1019 to 959 votes) the proposed collective bargaining agreement Sunday morning.

NFL Players Union Approves New CBA

The agreement gives the NFL:

  • 10 more years of labor peace without interruption
  • Players get an increased share of revenue
  • Former players get added benefits
  • 17-game regular seasons
  • Expanded playoff field that will include 14 teams
  • Game-day active roster will increase from 46 to 48 players (one of the extra players must be an offensive lineman)
  • Practice squads will expand from 10 players to 12 in 2020 and 2021 and to 14 starting in 2022
  • Eliminated suspensions for positive marijuana tests
  • New deal will provide neutral arbitration for most discipline cases
  • All starting in 2021
The salary cap for 2020 will be set at $198.2 million, which is a little lower than some teams anticipated. The projected franchise tag numbers are below in light of the new salary cap number.

NOTE: Brandon Scherff’s franchise tag is determined by either the tag number ($14.781) or 120% of his 2019 salary (which would be $15.1 million)…the higher number of the two, will serve as his price, according to the league’s rules on the franchise tag.

In Other News:

The Redskins officially franchise-tagged offensive lineman Brandon Scherff on Saturday. Scherff played and started in 11 games while only giving up one and a half sacks and was named to the Pro Bowl during the 2019 season.

Scherff is entering his sixth NFL season after originally being selected by the Redskins in the first round (5th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft. Scherff has earned Pro Bowl selections three out of four years in his career: 2016, 2017, and 2019.
