Commanders Release Three Players, Clear More Cap Space

The Washington Commanders were busy Friday afternoon as the team released three players from their active roster. The team let go of veteran LT Charles Leno, TE Logan Thomas, and center Nick Gates was notified he’ll be released on March 13. The moves save the team nearly $14 million in cap dollars.

Leno was set to count for $15,530,000 against the Commanders cap in 2024 (according to Spotrac); releasing him saves the team $7,280,000 in salary cap space but will leave them with an $8,250,000 dead cap hit in the process. Releasing Thomas clears $6.54 million in cap space for Washington., not to mention he turns 33 in July.

Gates’ contract is a bit trickier; releasing him gives the team a $5,323,334 dead cap hit while only saving them $333,333. Apparently, someone didn’t like what they saw. It should be noted that new offensive line coach Bobby Johnson also coached Gates in New York.
