Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney was suspended indefinitely by the NFL for gambling on Friday.
Toney and five other players were reprimanded for betting on games during the 2022 NFL season. Lions WR Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill have been suspended for six games, while Lions CJ Moore & Quintez Cephus, plus Commanders Shaka Toney, were all suspended indefinitely (at least one year).
Losing Toney for the 2023 season will emphasize a position that the Commanders were probably already eyeballing heading into the 2023 NFL Draft. While the team is edge-rusher-rich in terms of having Chase Young and Montez Sweat, they have serious questions about getting both star defenders under contract past the 2023 season.
The league made the team aware of the situation early on, and as of publishing, Shaka is still under contract with the Commanders. If they decide not to release him, the 25-year-old would be eligible to apply for reinstatement at the end of the 2023 season.
Statement from the Washington Commanders: “We have been made aware of the suspension of Shaka Toney. We have cooperated fully with the NFL’s investigation since receiving notice and support the league’s findings and actions. All further questions on the topic should be directed to the NFL League Office.”
