Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall tore his left Achilles tendon for the second time in five weeks according to multiple sources. Hall had surgery to repair the tendon on Thursday.
Hall originally injured his Achilles in week three’s match-up against the Philadelphia Eagles. He had surgery the following week and has been in rehab for the last few weeks.
At this point it is not known how Hall re-injured himself, but the accident happened at home.
It’s also unknown just how much extra time Hall could need after the second surgery as of yet. Many believe it could add another six to nine months onto the original timeline for his recovery.
It’s not all that uncommon for an athlete to re-tear their Achilles during rehab, Eagles offensive tackle Jason Peters did it as well and returned to the NFL with no issues following rehab.
Last February Hall signed a four-year, $17 million extension with a $3.25 million signing bonus. The deal carries a salary of $4 million in 2015, $1.25 million of which is guaranteed if he is on the roster on the 14th day of the league year. His salary cap number is set to be $4.8 million.
The original injury, and now the re-injury will certainly have some effect on if DeAngelo returns to the team next season. He’s already 30 years old and with the emergence of Bashaud Breeland and David Amerson, his contract numbers are a bit steep for what certainly will be a nickel corner.
The Redskins toyed with the idea of converting Hall to a safety in the past, that idea seems feasible at this point, however he has never been the guy you want to do the tackling as the last line of defense.
