After a week filled with reports about problems between Jay Gruden and the Redskins front office over the handling of Robert Griffin III, the other paper in Washington is reporting that Gruden could lose his job over it. Gruden is in his first year of a five-year guaranteed contract.
Here is a quote from the report:
“Although it’s unknown whether Snyder and Allen eventually will agree to trade Griffin, what has become clear from recent conversations with Redskins officials is that Gruden believes he needs a clean break from Griffin to focus on fixing Washington’s 3-9 mess. And if Snyder and Allen commit to Griffin as the starter in 2015, Gruden could be “one and done,” a team official said, alluding to Gruden possibly being fired despite four years remaining on his guaranteed five-year contract.”
Gruden has failed to do the very job he was brought to DC to do, and that’s help develop Griffin. All of the fault for Griffin’s lack of development is not solely on Gruden, but Gruden’s way of handling the situation after just four games of Griffin starting in his system this year is puzzling. Seeing a ‘QB guru’ basically stating that he can’t develop the quarterback further should raise red flags for everyone paying attention to the football facts here.
Another good question is why did Redskins management hire Gruden in the first place knowing he loved a pocket-passer type of QB (example: Andy Dalton) that completely went away from the things Griffin is good at. If Gruden did, in fact agree to develop Griffin and then just dumped him mid-season, that could be grounds for management having major issues with the rookie head coach.
Much like what the media reports, it’s unknown how much of this is speculation and how much is fact. Only time will tell…The next four games could make or break Gruden’s career path in the NFL as the pressure grows with each loss.
