Joe Jacoby was signed in 1981 as a free agent after not being drafted coming out of Louisville. He turned a dim start into a career that included three Superbowl rings and four NFC Championships as well as four straight Pro Bowl appearances from 1983-1986.
Jacoby is up against some stiff competition as six first-year eligible candidates, guard/tackle Larry Allen, kicker Morten Andersen, safety John Lynch, tackle Jonathan Ogden, defensive tackle Warren Sapp, and defensive end Michael Strahan are among the 27 semifinalists being considered for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2013. The long list of players that are waiting, or have been waiting for years to get in including Charles Haley, Cris Carter, Jerome Bettis, Tim Brown and coach Bill Parcells amongst others, are included as well. The full list of semifinalists can be found here.
The senior’s committee also can vote for players not on the current ballot, this year linebacker Dave Robinson (who played for Washington from 1973-74) is among two such players who could be enshrined.
Joe Jacoby is trying to become the second “Hog” to be enshrined into the Hall of Fame, guard/center Russ Grimm was inducted in 2010. The Redskins have 18 Hall of Famers who were long-time players of the franchise but have a ton of players who played for the team and went on to the hall after long careers that began in other places.
Jacoby is currently an assistant coach at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.
