Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan in Washington D.C., is reporting that free agent cornerback Quentin Jammer is visiting with the Redskins tonight.
Jammer, an 11-year veteran who turns 34 in June, has spent his entire career with the San Diego Chargers. He remains an unrestricted free agent.
Mike Jones of the Washington Post tweeted this not long after Paulsen’s report:
Washington failed in its attempts to sign both Aqib Talib and Antoine Winfield since free agency began in March. Talib opted to re-sign with New England, and Winfield chose Seattle over the Redskins and the Minnesota Vikings.
Jammer presents a unique type of player for the Redskins. He played safety while in college at Texas and took a few years to convert to being an NFL cornerback. The Redskins could pick Jammer up and perhaps use him at either corner or safety depending on what position they may draft for in this years draft.
This years draft is deep at corner and safety and the thought at the moment is that the Redskins, who are looking to upgrade at both positions, will be able to pick up one or perhaps two secondary players who can contribute this year. Adding Jammer to the team would allow Washington to be more flexible in their drafting process.
It should also be noted that Quentin Jammer was drafted with the 5th overall pick in 2002 by A.J. Smith while he was the general manager in San Diego. Smith now works for the Redskins as a front-office consultant.
The 6-foot, 204-pound Jammer has 719 career tackles and 21 interceptions. Jammer recorded 64 tackles, 1 forced fumble and 3 interceptions in 2012.
