The Washington Redskins claimed former Denver Broncos safety Duke Ihenacho (6-1, 207 pounds) off waivers on Sunday.
A third-year pro, Ihenacho started 14 regular season games a year ago, he also started three games in the post-season. For the year he registered 73 tackles, three forced fumbles and six passes defended.
With Brandon Meriweather suspended for the first two games, the Redskins were in the market for a guy like Ihenacho who specializes in playing strong safety.
Ihenacho was cut by the Broncos on Saturday. Where exactly he fits into the scheme of things is unknown at this point, but according to reports Akeem Davis will be moved to the practice squad to make room on the roster.
Brandon Meriweather is on the reserve/suspended list for the first two weeks and will not count against the 53-man roster totals.
It is possible that Ihenacho could end up in a starting role until Meriweather returns.
