The Washington Redskins entered Sunday on a four game losing streak since losing Robert Griffin III and sitting in the basement of the NFC East.
The team needed a major spark, and a victory of course, in order to keep any hope alive for the year.
Kirk Cousins has at times looked like a top-notch quarterback in that four game span, but he has also looked like a turnover machine as well.
The Redskins entered Sunday with the second worst turnover ration in the NFL at -9. That basically means they had turned it over nine times more than they have taken it away, which is not a formula for winning football games.
After Cousins committed his second turnover of the game, Jay Gruden decided it was time to make a change. The Redskins brought third string qb Colt McCoy in the game to start the second half. The very first pass play was a 70-yard touchdown pass to receiver Pierre Garcon.
It was the longest touchdown pass of McCoy’s career and his first scoring toss in the NFL since December 2012 for Cleveland.
McCoy completed 11-12 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown for the game.
Cousins had a fumble and interception in the first half, raising his giveaway total to 11 this season. He was 10 of 16 for 139 yards in the half.
Kicker Kai Forbath was successful on a 22-yard field goal at the end of regulation to give the Redskins a 19-17 win.
