DeAngelo Hall joined LaVar Arrington on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, DC., earlier this week to discuss rejoining the Redskins.
He had the following to say.
On why he decided to return to the Redskins at a greatly reduced salary after being released earlier in the off-season:
“It was about being where I felt comfortable, a place where I felt like I could definitely succeed, and a place I felt like had a chance to win. I can remember a couple years ago when I took that deal and left Atlanta and went to Oakland, I kind of found out the hard way not all money is good money. If a team wants to pay you $7-8 million and you’re struggling to go to practice, you’re struggling to play in games, your heart’s not in it, that’s no way to play football. When I feel like I’m not having fun and my heart’s not in it, I’m gonna hang it up. I felt like Washington was a place that I definitely wanted to be a part of.”
On if he thinks this team is good enough to win a championship:
“I think so. You add our quarterback, one more year smarter, tougher, wiser, knowing what he can do, what he can’t do. The defense, they have a lot to prove. We actually made some plays when we needed to, but we definitely didn’t play to the best of our ability. I think that’s gonna be a challenge to us, myself included. … But I definitely feel like we got a chance to do something special, absolutely.”
On being upbeat despite the fact the Redskins have been hamstrung by cap sanctions:
“Any time you take an $18 million cap hit, man — you can do that to any team in the National Football League, and they’re gonna struggle to compete. We were able to do it last year and win the division, something we hadn’t done in a long time. And you get Fred Davis back healthy, Orakpo back healthy, to get me back on the roster after being released early in the free-agency period, it’s huge. It’s huge. We were able to get quality players — players we felt like could help us win games — but didn’t have to go over the top and spend money.”
On money not being a factor:
“I’ve been blessed in this league to make a lot of money, so for me it wasn’t all about the money. I’m 29 years old, so hopefully if I can go out there and … help this team win a lot of football games and make plays, the rest of it is gonna be taken care of.”
On offers he received from other teams:
“A couple teams gave me some offers that definitely made me think, but like I said, ultimately I had great communication with Coach Shanahan throughout the whole process, with Raheem [Morris] … so the lines of communication were definitely open. I wasn’t shy about letting everybody know I definitely wanted to go back to Washington, but if it didn’t work out, I definitely had some other options out there. Just happy that we both could agree on things. This obviously wasn’t the most money I could get, but it made the most sense for me and my family.”
Hall has been a guy that many Redskins fans either love or hate. No matter which category you fall into, everyone should see this as veteran, team-first mentality coming from DeAngelo. It’s refreshing to know the players want to play in Washington now a days instead of worrying they are only here to collect paychecks, like in the past.
