This time of year it’s normal for a group of 90 men trying to make a professional football team to have a few injuries. The only thing teams can hope for is when injuries do happen, they are not too serious….there is no avoiding them completely.
Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall had a scare on Sunday. He suffered a bruised back and shouldn’t miss much time, coach Jay Gruden said.
Hall took a hard fall during one-on-one drills with the receivers. Hall leapt to break up a pass, hit the ground hard and did a somersault. Afterwards, while standing on the sideline, his back locked up on him, at that moment he was helped onto a cart and driven to the locker room.
“They carted him off for a dramatic exit,” Coach Jay Gruden said. “He could have walked off and made it a lot easier on me today.”
On a darker note, Darryl Sharpton (ILB) suffered a high-ankle sprain and could miss a good amount of time according to Gruden. The injury puts Sharpton’s roster spot in jeopardy if it lingers on. Sharpton is locked into a position battle at backup inside linebacker and was being viewed as a special teams player.
DeSean Jackson (WR) sat out practice again on Sunday with his ankle sprain. Jackson has been participating in individual drills but that’s it for now. Jackson has yet to run full speed since suffering a minor twist of his left ankle caused by being stepped on against the Patriots in practice Wednesday.
Brian Orakpo (LB) did not practice Sunday as he nursed a thigh contusion, but he could return as soon as Monday.
Chris Thompson (RB) could miss another six or seven days with his ankle sprain.
“It’s disappointing,” Gruden said of Thompson’s absence. “He was progressing very well. He needs the reps to do what we’re asking him to do on game day. If he’s not available to get these reps it will hurt his progress. Injuries happen, unfortunately to him more often than not. He has to figure out how to stay healthy. He has to get back on the field, no doubt about it.”
Phillip Thomas and Ryan Clark (Safeties) remained sidelined with sore hamstring issues. Silas Redd has a minor ankle sprain and should be ready to go tomorrow.
Jason Hatcher (DE) is slowly working his way back into things. Gruden said Hatcher is chomping at the bit to get out and play. Plan is still the third preseason game for his Redskins debut.
Leonard Hankerson (WR) continues to get better with each day but will have to meet with Dr. James Andrews and be cleared before he can start practicing with the team. On Sunday, he did a series of sprints with a sled and 90 pounds of additional weight strapped to him. Hankerson said that he expects to meet with the surgeon next week.
Jordan Reed (TE) missed practice the last two days because of a stomach virus.
Lache Seastrunk continues to have issues with the arch of his right foot, it has not kept him out of practice.
“You got to show up,” Seastrunk said. “You can’t just show up one game and be missing the next game. I mean, you got to be consistent. That’s what all the greats were; they were really consistent. And the days that you don’t want to practice, you have to make yourself practice; you have to make yourself practice hard.
“That’s why I try and do my best every single day. Even though I am in pain, I’m not going to say anything. I mean, I’m going to tough it out, because I want my coach to know that no matter what I’m going to go through, rain, sleet or hail, I’m going to do everything that I can to play.
“Your foot is going to hurt regardless. I mean, I just have to tough it out. It’s not killing me; I’m running. I still got to do what I got to do; I got to show them I’m tough. It’s whatever. I got my pads on, so I’m going to play.”
