Barry Cofield has been out since the beginning of the year with what doctors determined as a high-ankle sprain. The Redskins put him on the physically-unable-to-perform list (PUP) with a designation to return.
The PUP designation rules allow teams the option to bring a player back before week 6 instead of losing said player for the entire year, like in years past. Once the team reaches the week 6 point they then have 3 weeks to activate the player or he will be deemed ineligible and placed on the injured reserve list.
The Redskins have used up all the time they can in the process of trying to get Cofield in playing shape and must make a decision on if they will place him on injured reserve or activate him.
“It’s this week”, Jay Gruden said at his press conference on Monday. “We have to make a decision I believe by Wednesday. We’re going to talk about that when we get done here.”
Gruden understands what Cofield brings to the team, he just wanted him to be 100% before getting back on the field.
“He just adds more depth. He’s obviously a good player. We think a lot of him, and in his absence guys have stepped up and done some good things. But it to add another big body to the mix, as far as rotations are concerned, it can’t hurt, especially one with his ability. When he was playing for us earlier this year, I don’t think he was quite 100 percent. You could see that. Now, we feel like he’s back to close to 100 percent. He’s looking good out there. So, he’ll add to the depth.”
The Redskins will likely activate Cofield within the next two days before the deadline for a decision even comes. In order to activate Cofield the Redskins will have to release a player from their 53-man roster.
