The Washington Redskins have only played one preseason game this year but already have a growing list of injuries. The team placed three players on injured reserve over the last few days alone.
Among that group was second-round pick Derrius Guice (torn ACL), a player most all Redskins fans and beat writers were foaming at the mouth to see this year. Guice, TE Manasseh Garner (ACL), and now WR Robert Davis (broken tibia/torn LCL) have all been added to the team’s injured reserve list, effectively ending their 2018 season.
Davis, a sixth-round pick in 2017, was turning heads at camp this year and was competing for a backup role on the team. He was one of the bright spots of the receiving corps in the teams first preseason game against the Patriots last week. While Davis was no guarantee for a roster spot (the Redskins have several receivers vying for basically one or two slots), it certainly wasn’t an injury the team wanted as he has flashed extreme athletic ability that the team was definitely noticing the last few weeks. Redskins head coach Jay Gruden spoke about the injury Sunday.
“Yes, he is out for the year, unfortunately. He went up for the ball yesterday and he and Danny [Johnson], landed, or he landed awkwardly on his knee and has to have surgery. I just know its season-ending. You know, it will be a major surgery; it’s a nine to 12-month rehab process, PCL I believe and some other damage. So, Robert’s in our prayers, but he will recover quickly. He’s a good, strong, young guy and we’ll take care of him.”
The Redskins also released FB Elijah Wellman with an injury designation. In corresponding moves, they signed TE J.P. Holtz, LB Jeff Knox, and DL Jalen Wilkerson to fill the open roster spots. The team officially put Davis on IR Monday morning, the team signed WR Dan Williams III in a corresponding move to fill his spot to bring the roster total back to 90 players.
The team is also dealing with several players who are currently dinged up including ILB Shaun Dion Hamilton (sore knee), DL Daron Payne (ankle), DT Matt Ioannidis (slight knee strain/sprained ankle), and WR Trey Quinn (ribs). The team has yet to release an official injury report, but those are the significant ailments at the moment. Gruden addressed the injury bug at his presser Sunday.
“All the ones we’ve had we just have to accept, you know Derrius [Guice] was just running, and his leg got stuck in the turf wrong, and Rob [Robert Davis] went up and landed funny on his heel, and just you know so happens it just the way it is. You know, I think there’s a fine line we still have to practice football we still have to get these guys ready to play a game. So you know just trying to do the best we can to stay up. Coach great fundamentals, make sure they get good treatment, hydrate all that good stuff and hope for the best.”
