The Washington Redskins entered this weekend with two vacant spots on the 53-man roster. On Friday the Redskins waived linebacker Gabe Miller and defensive lineman Robert Thomas.
Today the Redskins signed cornerback Richard Crawford, and safety Jamarca Sanford to their active roster.
Many will remember that Crawford was the team’s seventh round draft pick in 2012. Crawford was waived during the process of assembling the 53-man roster back in August. The thought was that Crawford may not have been ready to comeback at that point from the injury that took his 2013 season.
After being cut, Crawford was signed to the practice squad days later. After just two weeks, Crawford was released.
Jamarca Sanford started 41 games in Minnesota over the past three seasons, recording 216 tackles, two interceptions and seven forced fumbles for the Vikings. He was placed on injured reserve at the end of the preseason and then released off of IR early in September.
Crawford is returning/Sanford is coming in a time of need for Washington, as the Redskins are reeling after losing DeAngelo Hall for the year. Last week against the Giants the Redskins had to start rookie Bashaud Breeland, who was not ready for ‘primetime’. Veteran Tracy Porter returned from an injury that kept him off the field all of pre-season/season and he looked rusty.
Jay Gruden had this to say about the two players on Tuesday:
“Well, Sanford has got some experience at obviously safety and he can help on special teams. We want to take a good look at him. Obviously, Trenton Robinson’s injury right now, we are not sure what his status is going to be so we needed to add another safety. Crawford has got the experience if Porter is still a little bit banged up. We will need another guy there, so he knows the system. Sanford, special teams and obviously has played safety, and we will make a decision later on in the week of who is up and who is not.”
