The Washington Redskins have decided to bring back-up quarterback Colt McCoy back to the team in 2015. According to multiple sources, the Redskins have decided to re-sign the 5-year NFL vet.
McCoy, 28, was the third-string quarterback for Washington for much of 2014 until he was called upon to take over for the slumping Kirk Cousins. McCoy showed flashes but an injury to his neck ended his 2014 season prematurely.
McCoy was 1-3 as a starter in 2014 but did direct the team to a come-from-behind victory over the Tennessee Titans. His lone victory as a starter came in his trip back to his home state of Texas in which the Redskins defeated the Cowboys 20-17 in overtime.
McCoy ended 2014 with 1057 yards passing with four touchdowns and three interceptions while hitting 71% of his passes.
The Redskins now have three quarterbacks on the roster with RGIII, Kirk Cousins and McCoy. Many have speculated that there might be an open competition for the position in training camp, but Redskins head coach Jay Gruden announced at the combine that Robert Griffin III will head into 2015 as the starting QB of the team.
It is unknown if new GM Scot McCloughan was pursuing any other QB’s in free agency, but McCoy’s familiarity with Gruden’s system likely was the reason the Redskins decided to bring him back.
