The Washington Redskins released often-injured running back Keith Marshall Wednesday afternoon. According to the team’s website, Marshall was released with an injury settlement. In a corresponding move, the team signed defensive back Prince Charles Iworah.
Iworah (ee-WAR-uh) was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round of 2017’s draft. He was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs to a futures contract in January but was released in May.
One NFL scout had the following to say about Iworah:
“He has bouncy feet and brings necessary reactive quickness to the position. Has twitch and acceleration out of breaks to chase the rabbit. Explosive athlete.”
The team may have made the move to fill the spot that Josh Holsey will leave vacant (hopefully temporarily) as he begins camp on the PUP list after injuring himself away from the field.
Marshall was drafted by the Redskins in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft but had spent back-to-back years on injured reserve. The odds were stacked against him this year as the team is stacked at running back with second-round draft pick Derrius Guice, Robert Kelley, Chris Thompson, Kapri Bibbs, Martez Carter, Byron Marshall, and Samaje Perine already competing for roster spots.
Redskins head coach Jay Gruden announced Wednesday afternoon that defensive lineman Stacy McGee (recovering from groin surgery) and defensive back Josh Holsey (cut toe) would start camp on the physically unable to perform list (PUP).
“We have two guys opening up PUP. Stacy McGee recovered from his core muscle surgery in the offseason, and then (Joshua) Holsey had an accident, dropped something on his toe he’ll start on PUP also.”
