According to multiple sources, the Washington Redskins have signed former Seattle Seahawks safety Jeron Johnson. Johnson (5-10, 212 lbs) arrived for a visit with the Redskins on Sunday and signed his deal Monday morning.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has reported it to be a two-year deal worth $4 million.
Johnson, 26, played for Seattle from 2011-14, serving as current Seahawks’s strong safety Kam Chancellor’s backup and a special teams standout. In 46 career games, he has 43 combined tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble and no interceptions.
It’s unknown at this point how the Redskins will use Johnson, but with no returning starters at safety from last years roster, Johnson will likely compete to start.
Johnson is now the sixth safety on the Redskins roster, joining Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith, Akeem Davis, Duke Ihenacho, Trenton Robinson and Phillip Thomas.
This latest signing is yet another move directed at improving one of the worst defenses in the league from last season. The team already signed defensive lineman Ricky Jean-Francois, Stephen Paea and Terrance Knighton last week. They also signed former San Francisco 49ers corner Chris Culliver, who is expected to start.
Below are a couple of videos featuring Johnson:
