The Washington Redskins opened their 2017 training camp on Thursday as day 1 in Richmond, Virginia brought hot temperatures and the look of a team wanting to prove the naysayers wrong.
The Redskins are looking to improve on their last two seasons (9-7 & 8-7-1) in 2017 and believe that the roster is deeper than it’s been since head coach Jay Gruden arrived in 2014. Wednesday the team went through their mandatory conditioning tests and the team placed four players on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Thursday the Redskins had an early morning walk-thru practice followed by a full afternoon practice. Washington announced in between the sessions that they had officially released linebacker Houston Bates after placing him on the PUP the day before. In a corresponding move, the franchise also signed tight end E.J. Bibbs to help fill the void for Jordan Reed, who was one of the four players put on the PUP, and Vernon Davis, who is dealing with a tweaked hamstring. Gruden stated his case of wanting to bring Bates back once he is healthy at his daily presser.
“Houston, he’s obviously injured right now and he’s going to hopefully get himself right,” said Gruden. “Once he gets healthy towards the end of the year, there’s a chance that we could bring him back or next year when he’s 100 percent fully. We needed a spot for the tight end because of Jordan [Reed] and Vernon [Davis] has got a little bit of a tweaked hamstring but he’s going to practice, so we had to make a move unfortunately. Houston was a great leader for us on special teams, a great player for us and hopefully, we’ll see him again soon.”
Thursday’s practice was highlighted by two Kendall Fuller interceptions, and stand-out play by Junior Galette, Josh Doctson, Terrelle Pryor, as well as rookies Jonathan Allen, Ryan Anderson and Chase Roullier.
