Josh Morgan Hopes to Return for OTAs
Washington Redskins wide-out Josh Morgan says his recovery from ankle surgery remains on schedule and that he’s aiming to be on the field with his teammates when OTA’s begin May 20.
“I feel good,” Morgan said Friday morning at Redskins Park. “Everything’s coming along real good. I’m in here rehabbing every day. I’m doing all the drills. Getting stronger every day. Feeling more confident every day. I just have to get my leg all the way back strong and get excited about playing healthy this year.”
Morgan made his comments while participating in an NFL Play 60 event with dozens of local children. Also representing the Redskins were Tyler Polumbus, Niles Paul, Dorson Boyce, Jordan Bernstine and Ricky Elmore.
Although Morgan led the team with 48 catches last season, he has acknowledged that he wasn’t performing at 100-percent. The 27-year-old broke his right ankle as a member of the 49ers in Oct. 2011 and the injury still hampered him throughout his first season as a Redskin. Against the Cowboys in Week 17, in fact, an ailing Morgan wasn’t targeted once by Robert Griffin III.
“I was as healthy as I was going to be last year,” Morgan said. “I’m just excited about being healthy. There’s nothing worse as an athlete than to go out there and know you’re not 100 percent.”
After the season, which he described as the “most painful” of his career, Morgan had a plate and seven screws removed from his ankle. He also had surgery on both of his hands.
When Morgan was asked in late February about his availability for OTA’s, he said it was too early to know if he would be able to participate. On Friday, he said he’s encouraged enough by his progress to consider full participation a realistic goal.
“I believe so,” he said, asked if he expects to be ready. “I’m aiming to be, honestly. Even though I’m not 100-percent right now, I want to get out there with my teammates because that’s the only way I’m going to get it out of my head that I just had surgery in February. I have to stop thinking about it. That’s the only way I’m going to get my technique back, really get my strength and take off back.”
Morgan added: “The motion in my ankle is great. It’s all about getting the strength back in my leg. Once I do that, I’ll be 100 percent.”
