I’m hearing the #Redskins have told center Will Montgomery he will be released

As others point out, Will Montgomery’s release was with a failed physical designation, according to the NFL transactions list. #RedskinsTalk

Can confirm, via source, that #Redskins have released center Will Montgomery. Had been with the team 6 years. (1st reported: @SkyKerstein).

#Redskins plan to move Lichtensteiger to C. Had hoped to last year, but LeRibeus came in out of shape.

The move may come as a surprise to some but Montgomery had a weak 2013 and the Redskins wanted to make a move prior to last year but couldn’t due to lack of personnel. The signing of Shawn Lauvao and hopefully, the thought of Josh LeRibeus stepping up this season (finally) were two factors in what finally gave the Redskins the ability to cut Montgomery.
Montgomery signed a four-year, $12 million dollar contract in 2012 and was scheduled to count for $3.425 million against the cap in 2014. The release will save the Redskins nearly $2 million in cap dollars and gives them the chance to move guard Kory Lichtensteiger over to center.
