Redskins Release Injured WR Jerry Rice Jr; Sign DE Jeremy Towns
After falling awkwardly while stretching out for an overthrown pass during last Thursday’s practice, Jerry Rice Jr reached for his left shoulder and didn’t return to practice afterwards. Those with knowledge of the Washington Redskins roster depth at receiver knew that Rice, who was a long shot to make the team to begin with, had seen his last days in burgundy and gold.
The Redskins released Rice on Sunday with the waived/injured designation, the team learned that he suffered a torn labrum and will require surgery. More than likely Rice will not be claimed by another team, if not, he will find himself on the Redskins injured reserve list (IR).
To fill the vacant spot on the 90-man roster, the Redskins signed un-drafted defensive end Jeremy Towns out of Samford University.
The 6-foot-3, 303 pound defender concluded his college career with a senior season that saw him start all 13 games and finish with 54 tackles, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble.
UPDATE 8:14
WR Jerry Rice Jr. (shoulder) cleared waivers and reverts to #Redskins reserve/injured, according to NFL transactions. Does not count vs. 90.
