Redskins Sign Offensive Tackle Willie Smith
The Washington Redskins intend to completely rebuild their offensive line one piece at a time. Tuesday the team signed another lineman to add to their crowded list as the team signed veteran tackle Willie Smith.
Smith (6-5, 310 lbs) actually began his career with the Redskins as an undrafted free agent in 2011 out of East Carolina University. Smith was a high-school receiver who only started playing on the line in college. He showed signs of being gifted athletically but lacked strength at that time. The thought was he needed time in the weight room and a chance to better condition himself for the NFL game.
Smtih was thrust into a starting role for three games with the Redskins when Trent Williams was suspended by the league.
During the final set of cuts in 2012, Smith was released by the Redskins, he eventually signed with the Oakland Raiders and started seven games for them. The San Diego Chargers signed Smith midway through the 2013 season, but he’s only started one game since.
To make room for Smith the Redskins let go of offensive tackle Tovar Allen. The Redskins now have six tackles on their roster with Smith, Williams, Brandon Scherff, Tom Compton, Morgan Moses and Takoby Cofield.
