Washington Redskins GM Scot McCloughan announced at his press conference today that the team will pick up the 2016 option on the contract of Robert Griffin III.

“We talked to Robert, talked to the agent, very positive, very positive feeling in the building right now.”

The option will pay Griffin $16.1 million for the 2016 season. All first-round picks have the option built-into their rookie contracts, the Redskins exercised Ryan Kerrigan’s just last season. The team has until the start of the league year (in early March of next year) to rescind the option or it will become fully guaranteed.

The move shows that the organization is standing behind Griffin in hopes that he will return to his 2012 form, when he won rookie of the year. After his rookie year no one would have thought this would even be a topic, but after two rough seasons the topic has been discussed openly and often.

Head coach Jay Gruden named him the starter in February and the front office has picked up his 2016 option, the ball is now in RGIII’s court to do the rest.

Griffin, who hasn’t posted on social media since February, didn’t comment on the situation, but in a conversation with NFL Network last week said that he would not let the contract talks affect his play on the field.

Below is a video of Griffin on the TV program “Redskins Nation” talking about being focused on winning in 2015.
