Tyer was hired by the Redskins in 1971 and was named head trainer in 1976. In his time with the team, Tyer worked in an incredible 602 regular-season games and was a part of five Super Bowl appearances — three of which turned into titles for the Redskins. Tyer also hasn’t escaped team and national praise. In 2000, he was recognized by the NFL as its “Super Athletic Trainer of the Year” and was given the Fain Cain Memorial Award as the NFL’s Outstanding Athletic Trainer by the NFL Physician’s Society. In 2003, Tyer was inducted into the Redskins’ Ring of Fame at FedExField.
