Robert Griffin III Wins NFC Player of the Week Honors, Again

000 Robert Griffin III Wins NFC Player of the Week Honors, AgainRedskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III has been named NFC player of the week for the second time this season (the first was against the Saints in week 1). Griffin’s 14-15, 200 yard, 4 td performance was just the second time in the history of the league that a rookie scored a perfect qb rating of 158.3.

Here are some solid facts from Redskins.com.

- Last Redskin to win Offensive Player of the Week twice in one season: Santana Moss (Weeks 2 and 16, 2005)

- Last Redskins QB to win Offensive Player of the Week twice in one season: Brad Johnson (Weeks 2 and 4, 1999)

- Griffin III is the first Redskins rookie at any position to win two Player of the Week awards in a season since the league began awarding them in 1984.

- Griffin III is the first rookie quarterback to win Player of the Week two times since the award began in 1984.

By taking in the information above, it’s safe to say that this doesn’t happen very often — especially for a rookie.

This week’s NFC Offensive Player of the Week distinction is just the latest in a slew of awards Griffin III has earned so far this season, which include:

- NFC Offensive Player of the Week (twice)

- NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month

- Pepsi Max Offensive Rookie of the Week (three times)

- FedExAir Player of the Week

Griffin III is also a candidate — again — for the Offensive Rookie of the Week. Fans can vote online until Friday at 3 p.m. by clicking here.

Here’s a few more nuggets about Griffin III before we part ways:

- Last week, Griffin III became the first rookie in NFL history with 200 passing yards, 75 rushing yards and 4 passing TDs in a single game.

- With 145 passing yards Thursday vs. the Dallas Cowboys, Griffin III can break Norm Snead’s team record for passing yards by a rookie (2,337, set in 1961).

- Griffin III is 94 rushing yards shy of breaking Cam Newton’s NFL record for rushing yards in a season by a rookie quarterback (706).

NFL Admits Mistake in Redskins vs Panthers Game

FDX106 114 2012 133144 high NFL Admits Mistake in Redskins vs Panthers Game
This past weekend most Redskins fans were completely irate at what appeared to be a horrible call, or should I say wrongful whistling. Of course the officials in the game originally tried to say that they blew the whistle after DeAngelo Williams was already in the end-zone, today the league admitted that they were wrong on the play. By admitting this, the NFL is basically letting us know that they changed the landscape of the game wrongfully. Most Skins fans probably already realize that this changed the flow of the game and could be pointed at as the spot where things got bad.

Watching the replay will show you that at least one player (Perry Riley) had an easy shot at knocking Williams out of bounds but he pulled up when he heard the whistle blow, not to mention DeAngelo Hall was held as well.

No one will ever know if the Panthers would have ever scored a few plays later or not, but one thing is for sure…the officiating units each weekend need to be held accountable when they screw up just like everyone else. Of course that’s just my jaded opinion.

DeAngelo Hall Will be Fined, Not Suspended for Outburst on Official

JM248021351516812 image 1024w DeAngelo Hall Will be Fined, Not Suspended for Outburst on Official

Washington Redskins cornerback  DeAngelo Hall will be fined an undetermined amount  of his salary for the situation in last weekends game against in the Pittsburgh Steelers in which Hall was ejected after he took his helmet off and appeared to curse an official.

The league plans on levying the fine and also issuing Hall a formal warning  that any conduct in the future of this nature will lead to suspension. Hall will remain active and will play in the teams game this weekend against the Carolina Panthers.

In a radio interview this week on 106.7, Hall said that the referee was equally at fault and also went on to say “It’s not a system in place where… they’re the good cops and we’re the criminals. It has to be an even playing field, a level playing field. If they want us to go out there and respect them, they have to do the same thing. They have to give us the same kind of respect that I feel like we’ve been giving them as players and as referees that ultimately control some of the calls in these games. Nobody is going out there trying to bully the referees and likewise, they shouldn’t be out there trying to bully us.”

Some players including Redskins linebacker Lorenzo Alexander have gone on record this week as saying they didn’t believe ‘was solely at fault.’

“I don’t know if D-Hall did anything to cross the line, in my opinion,” Alexander said Wednesday. “It was a timeout. He took his helmet off. Fine. All he was doing was talking and it escalated to cussing. He never touched the ref or anything like that. I’m trying to move him back. [The] guy’s kind of chasing him at the same time. So I think both parties needed to do a better job of, ‘Okay, it’s over. Let’s get away from it.’ ”

A Drive Redskins Fans Won’t Soon Forget

Last Sunday Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III had one of the best series of plays that any player could possibly have. The 4th and ten play where he made defender after defender miss until Logan Paulson made the first down grab….the picture perfect touchdown pass to Santana Moss. NFL films put together this feature video highlighting that drive as their “Drive of the Week”.

Enjoy.

Are RG3 and Alfred Morris The Best Rookie Combo in NFL History?

Are RG3 and Alfred Morris The Best Rookie Combo in NFL History?

Just seven weeks into the NFL season rookies Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris have fans of the Washington Redskins excited not only about the future, but about the present as well.  Both have been putting up Pro Bowl type numbers, RG3 is 133-189 for a 70.4 percent completion % (tops in the league), 1601 yards and 7 touchdowns (101.8 qb rating) to go along with 468 yards rushing and 6 td’s rushing. Morris is currently second in the NFL with 658 yards (Arian Foster has 659) on 138 attempts and 5 td’s. If Griffin gets 32 more rushing yards this week the combo will become the first QB/RB rookie combo to both rush for 500 yards in a season.

The dynamics of the Redskins offense are completely different with these two in the backfield this year. The Redskins are a team that has had trouble scoring over 17 points a game for quite some time, not this year as the team has hovered around 30 points a game all season.  In fact, the Redskins are averaging over 175+ yards rushing yards  a game,  and 200+ passing yards a game, that’s something that hasn’t been done over the span of a full season since the 1958 Baltimore Colts did it.

Griffin is the obvious leader of the team this year, but the two complement each other very well. Having Griffin as an added rushing threat has eased the pressure off Morris, and teams are  highly unlikely to try to stack the box against him with the thought of Griffin throwing the ball over their heads for massive gains through the air. It could be argued that both of these talented and young players are having seasons that put them above any other rookie in the league this year. I could easily see the rookie of the year voting coming down to the two of them at the end of the season . No matter what, one thing is for certain, these two gifted young men control the destiny of the Redskins this year, and for perhaps many years to come.

Inside the Rivalry: Redskins vs Giants

32377 10151293332079574 202977956 n Inside the Rivalry: Redskins vs Giants
This Sunday when the Washington Redskins travel to New York (Jersey) to take on the Giants, it will mark the 159th time the two have faced off. The Giants have a series lead of 91-63-4, based largely on the early success by the Giants, the Redskins have beaten the Giants the last two times the teams played.

Over the last 80 years the two teams have given their fans many reasons to cheer. Both teams have multiple championships , multiple Hall of Fame players and coaches, and both reside in what is widely considered to be the best division in football history, the NFC East.

The following video gives an in-depth look at the long and storied history the two share.

Redskins vs Vikings: Five Things to Look For

219189 10151270609824574 249243365 o 1024x802 Redskins vs Vikings: Five Things to Look For
The Washington Redskins will face the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday at FedEx Field as Washington tries to break it’s current home losing streak, which stands at 8 (a number which stretches back to week two of the 2011 season). This game is a must-win for the Redskins with them heading to New York to take on the Giants next week and Pittsburgh the following week after.

  1. Robert Griffin III - Easily the biggest story-line of them all, Griffin still has yet to be cleared to play this weekend but all signs point to him making a comeback this week from last week’s “mild” concussion. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan has already said that the game-plan will stay the same no matter if RGIII plays or not. Griffin’s play making ability is hard to match, so obviously the chances of winning are greater if he is the signal caller who is under center on Sunday.
  2. New Kicker, hopefully better resultsEarlier this week Redskins place kicker Billy Cundiff was released and Kai Forbath was signed to replace him. Forbath, a former Lou Groza award winner from UCLA, has never kicked a field goal in an NFL game but was 5-5 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in preseason this year. In the last few weeks the kicking game, or lack there of, has taken the wind out of the offense on more than one occasion and has hurt the time as far as momentum has been concerned. The Redskins are hoping Forbath can at least be an answer in short range after Cundiff proved inept in that department.
  3. Containing Percy Harvin – With the Redskins secondary being the weak-link of the unit this year, seeing Harvin lined up across the line should be something that defensive coordinator Jim Haslett worried. Harvin has 38 catches on the season for a total of 407 yards and a touchdown, thing is, Harvin has gotten 77.6 % of his yards after the catch, which is amazing. Washington will need to find an answer to Harvin early or look for a long day on defense.
  4. Pressure on the QB – Minesota finds itself near the top of the league in this department and the Redskins offensive line will need to pay extra attention to defensive end Jared Allen if they want to control the tempo of this game. The Redskins have found themselves in un-familiar territory this year as Brian Orakpo and Adam Carriker both went down early on this year. Second year linebacker Ryan Kerrigan has shined and will need to get to Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder early and often. The defensive unit needs one or more people to step up and give Kerrigan some help if the Redskins are to get any better this year, keep an eye on Barry Cofield and Jarvis Jenkins in this one.
  5. Control the clock –  For Minnesota  this game will mark the first time Adrian Peterson has returned to FedEx Field since a season ending knee injury last year, Peterson’s performance will dictate whatever the Vikings do on offense. For the Redskins they will need to get rookie Alfred Morris going early and make the game as simple as possible for Robert Griffin III to be able to manage without mistakes or injuries. Morris will try to become the first running back in NFL history to rush for 75 or more yards in his first six games, he is tied with Eric Dickerson currently with 5.
