Redskins Sign Kicker Kai Forbath, Release Billy Cundiff

512x Redskins Sign Kicker Kai Forbath, Release Billy Cundiff
The Washington Redskins  have signed field goal kicker Kai Forbath who was projected as the second best kicker in the 2011 draft after winning the Lou Groza award (given to the best place kicker in the country) in 2009 at UCLA. Forbath was signed as a un-drafted free agent  by the Dallas Cowbows last year and then put on the non-injured/reserve list and then waived on April 16 of this year, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed him the next day but cut him in camp . Forbath kicked the only points in against the Redskins in preseason this year when the Bucs and Skins met.

This reported signing means the Redskins are sure to now release kicker Billy Cundiff following another poor outing last weekend against the Atlanta Falcons when Cundiff missed a 31 yard field goal(his second in two weeks from that distance) that would have given the Redskins a 10-0 lead with very little time left in the first half.

Updated 5:00 PM Eastern Standard Time….Billy Cundiff has officially been released.

This signing comes after free agent kickers Olindo Mare, Josh Brown and Forbath were at Redskins Park today working out. Forbath will become the 19th place kicker the Redskins have had since 1994.

Forbath was 5/5 in preseason this year but has never attempted a kick in the NFL’s regular season. He made 10 of 13 field goals from beyond 50 yards at UCLA, including the game winning  51-yarder as senior to beat Oregon State, he also hit on 84.2 % of his field goals (72.2 % as a senior).

Here is a draft profile for him from 2011.

Should the Redskins sit Robert Griffin III This Weekend or Play Him?

a2e529aa1331853c5bb047ab628e906f Should the Redskins sit Robert Griffin III This Weekend or Play Him?
If you are a fan of the Washington Redskins and haven’t been stuck in a cave all weekend, you already know that the star quarterback of the burgundy and gold went down with what coach Mike Shanahan described as a “mild” concussion. As in any concussion case in the NFL, Griffin was not allowed back in the game once he showed symptoms of not being fully coherent.

Shanahan went on further to say that Griffin did’nt what quarter it was nor did he know the score of the game. As in all post concussion situations in the NFL, Griffin will have to undergo a series of test to determine if he can play of not. Obviously the Redskins want RG3 in the lineup on game-day, but is it worth it to risk pushing him to fast and risking further injury? Some say yes….while some are saying no. Shanahan said today at his press conference that Griffin was looking fine, no headache, he’s not dizzy or vomiting either which are all symptoms concussion injuries provide.

Those who are saying yes point at the fact that you don’t want Griffin to play scared and that you should send him back out there and hope that he has learned to slide or run out of bounds in those types of situations that he was injured in. While those who say no point at the fact you don’t want to scramble your rookie quarterbacks brain around this early on after the kings ransom we paid for him. Both points are solid so I want to ask you the readers out there just what your opinion is, sound off in this poll and/or comment to give your opinion on this one.

Should the Redskins sit Robert Griffin III This Weekend or Play Him?

  • Sit Him (30%, 86 Votes)

Redskins Final Thoughts: Week 5 | WashingtonExaminer.com
The more I’m around Robert Griffin III the more I’m impressed, just by the way he is with others. He’s not perfect so I’m not going that route. But there’s a savviness that comes through in many ways. Even in press conferences. I’ve seen athletes who come across as, uh, too rehearsed, in fact some may have played quarterback here recently.

Meriweather Still Out; Injuries Force Redskins To Adjust Game Plan ” CBS DC
“The other day we knew Meriweather was going to play. We had a lot of plans for him, a lot of things to do. He actually becomes our third corner in a lot of situations so we had to scrap all that stuff. So, you’re sitting in the locker room crossing things off and thinking of things you can do, and we decided to go with [safety] Reed [Doughty] as the starter. It changed your plans because everybody has their strengths and weaknesses. Meriweather has great strengths because he’s an ex-corner that can play coverage. He’s a really good cover guy and we just lost that ability at the time”, said Jim Haslett.

Robert Griffin III Must Succeed In The Run Game If The Redskins Are To Beat Atlanta ” CBS DC
Make no mistake about it quarterbacks Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III are the future of the NFL. The game is evolving to a point where one day, every NFL quarterback will  be required to run like Mike Vick and throw like Drew Bees (some say RG3 already fits the bill).  Look for NFL coaches to continue to implement college style formations and plays into their respective gameplans.  The NFL will never completely resemble the NCAA, but it’s easy to see that certain collegiate staples are beginning to find a cozy home in the National Football League.

Garçon Ready To Go For Third Start
“You have to go out there and play hard and try to set the tone for the team, the offense and help the running backs get more yards when you’re blocking for them.  It’s part of the game,” Garçon said.  “You just have to go out there and give a great effort.  That’s what coaches ask for and that’s what we’ve got to give them every time.”

Need to Know: Who has the better offense? – Rich Tandler’s Real Redskins
It all adds up to the Redskins being ranked third in the NFL in terms of yards gained with 1687 while the Falcons are 15th with 1461 yards. The Falcons have faced tougher defenses in terms of yards given up in their four games than have the Redskins. Atlanta’s offense has gone up against three defenses ranked 13th or better and the Redskins have faced three that are 19th or worse including the 30th- and 32nd-ranked units.

Morris has only one speed
“Alfred is very conscientious,” offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said Thursday. “He never feels like he’s arrived. He’s working every day in practice [and] walkthroughs.” Shanahan added: “He only goes one speed. We try to slow him down in walkthrough [because] he’s running as hard as he can.”

RG3 will need to set rookie record again
Prior to the scoring change, Griffin was credited with 252 rushing yards, the most any Redskins rookie quarterback has had in a season. As a result of the changes, Griffin now is credited with 18 fewer rushing yards. That makes his total 234 for the season, six yards short of Sammy Baugh’s rookie record of 240 yards.

Need to Know: Moss accepting his new role – Rich Tandler’s Real Redskins
His numbers aren’t off because he’s playing poorly, they are off because he’s getting fewer opportunities. After being the team’s primary receiver since coming to the team in 2005, Moss has taken a back seat to Pierre Garçon, Josh Morgan, and Leonard Hankerson.

Sacks lacking up front for Redskins – Washington Times
Through four games, the Redskins have seven sacks but none from their down linemen. Getting less production from those positions in a 3-4 defense is common, but linemen are determined to make more of a tangible impact. “I believe that the sacks will come,” Kedric Golston said. “There’s really no excuses, whether it’s max protection or quick throws. It’s our job to get the quarterback down on the ground.”

Redskins vs. Falcons: 5 Questions – Washington Times
Which defense will stand up? Atlanta has the third-highest scoring offense in the NFL, averaging 31.0 points per game. The Redskins rank fourth at 30.8. Only two games have a greater over/under than the 50 points oddsmakers assigned to this one. The Redskins’ defense is way better on third down (34.1 percent), though, than Atlanta’s (48).

RGIII visits Broad Run game
Because Robert Griffin III isn’t actually a real person but rather a cyborg sent from outer space to set offensive records and inspire teammates and make both hard-core football fans and suburban parents swoon, he decided to show up at Broad Run on Friday night and pose for photos with cheerleaders and assorted students while wearing a breast cancer awareness shirt.

The Future Of The NFL: Mobile Quarterbacks -
The game is moving at a different speed than that of the 1960′s,70′s, 80′s, and even 1990′s. It’s a whole different animal. As defenses get faster, offenses have to find ways to subvert that speed. The solution? More speed. Ever hear of the old saying “Fighting fire with fire”? I’m pretty sure Steve Young and his 49ers used that term when talking about how to get around defensive speed.

Trent Williams, Fred Davis earn back Redskins teammates’ trust – The Washington Post
“That’s a driving force behind a lot of things that I do as of now,” Williams said this week. “I made a mistake, and I kind of use it as a learning experience. Of course, I alienated my team for four games and wasn’t able to be there. I was a captain at the time, and that made me feel even worse. This year I’m just trying to prove to them that I’ve grown up a lot and that’s not me anymore.”

Washington Redskins pass defense hindered by instability at safety – The Washington Post
But things haven’t gone as scripted, with Meriweather hurt and Jackson serving a suspension by the NFL for violating the sport’s substance abuse policy. The Redskins again are left patching together a lineup at safety to face the unbeaten Atlanta Falcons and their highly productive quarterback, Matt Ryan, Sunday at FedEx Field.

Alfred Morris Has Been Impressive so Far This Season

alfredmorris Alfred Morris Has Been Impressive so Far This Season

Washington Redskins rookie running back Alfred Morris celebrates a touchdown.

Washington Redskins rookie running-back Alfred Morris has been everything you could ask for in a six round draft pick so far this season. The Florida Atlantic product that was once thought to be to slow to make it in the NFL has been hard at work trying to prove his doubters wrong. So far this season he has rushed 61 times for 263 yards and 3 touchdowns. His 263 yards have him 9th in the NFL in rushing, and his 3 touchdowns have him tied with 6 other players, including Robert Griffin III, for 1st. All of that, and he still drives a $1300 dollar vehicle to Redskins Park everyday.

The 23-year old Morris is quickly making his case to be  ”the next Shanahan back” that the Redskins have been looking for. Many were shocked and said “who” when they found Morris’s name at the top of the depth chart after the team cut Tim Hightower this year, most of those who were shocked, now have fallen in love with the 5-10 and 218 pound back that goes by the handle @Trey_Deuces on twitter. The reason it has been easy to fall in love with him is simple, the kid knows how to hit the holes and looks like a natural fit in the zone blocking scheme Mike Shanahan has made famous. His ability to complement RG3 has helped the Redskins become the top scoring team in the league so far this season.

It may come as a surprise to some, but Morris has been a Redskins fan for some time now (as he told @BurgundyBlog in an interview this past May) so it’s a dream come true for him. Much is still unknown on just how well Morris will hold up to the grueling beat-down NFL running backs undergo, but he is already turning heads and becoming a house-hold in the Redskins community!

Redskins linebacker Lorenzo Alexander was fined $15,750 for unnecessary roughness during the Rams game. Rams cornerback Janoris Jenkins was fined $15,750 and defensive lineman Robert Quinn was fined $7,875, both for unnecessary roughness.

Redskins Final Thoughts: Week 3 | WashingtonExaminer.com
Losing Pierre Garcon for another week won’t help the Redskins. However, even without him last week the offense moved the ball and was in position for another 30-point plus game.  Had they scored on that last drive, or had Aldrick Robinsonheld onto a deep ball inside the 15, they would have had a huge day.

Shanahan said Garcon pushed hard during Friday’s practice but his foot remained sore and he was unable to participate in full team drills.

“It was unexpected, really,” Johnson said. “I’m very thankful for the opportunity they’re giving me to come back.”

Alfred Morris has been fast enough to churn out yards
“I think with those fast guys, those [NFL scouting] combine fast guys, you don’t see as many long runs,” Shanahan said. “Game speed is about carrying your pads, pressing blocks, putting your foot violently in the ground and how much you accelerate out of the cut. Al is a guy that once he puts his foot down, he actually gains momentum from that. He can put his foot in the ground and accelerate out of it and actually run faster out of the cut than he did going into it.

Redskins-Bengals: Five story lines to follow
Secondary adjustments: In each of the past two weeks, the Redskins’ defensive backs have been vulnerable to opponents’ double moves, and they also have given up seven pass plays of 25 yards or more. In the words of defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, “Stuff like that shouldn’t happen.”

Bengals defensive player to watch: DT Geno Atkins
“Usually interior guys don’t get a whole lot [of sacks],” Redskins left guard Kory Lichtensteiger said. “Those are big numbers for him. I see a pretty dynamic guy that plays run and pass both very well. I don’t think he’s very heavy, but the weight that he has, he uses effectively. He’s got power and some finesse, too, so you’ve got to prepare on all fronts.”
