Redskins re-sign safety Deshazor Everett

The Washington Redskins started to work on their secondary Tuesday when the team decided to bring back one of their own. While terms of the agreement are not yet available, safety Deshazor Everett was re-signed to a multiyear deal.

Everett was a restricted free agent that the Redskins view as a backup safety and key special team’s player. Last season, Everett played in 14 games, starting eight, while recording 52 tackles (31 solo). He also defended five passes and forced a fumble.

Everett (6-0, 195) first entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the 2015 season. Since joining the Redskins on August 1, 2015, he has appeared in 41 career games, recording 61 tackles (38 solo), a forced fumble and an interception.

The team also announced they have waived tackle Kevin Bowen, and running back’s Kenny Hilliard and Dare Ogunbowale.

The Redskins decided to not place the team’s franchise tag on quarterback Kirk Cousins for the third time, effectively ending the drama that has followed both the team and Cousins for multiple seasons. Cousins is expected to sign with one of four different football clubs once free agency opens next week. Rumors have stated the deal he will sign may be in the 3-year, 90 million fully guaranteed ballpark. Only time will tell if this is the right move for Washington. In the meantime, the Redskins will move ahead with Alex Smith at quarterback (at about 13-17 million cheaper next season than Kirk) and will now have more money to finish building their defense and also re-sign other valuable pieces, such as inside-linebacker Zach Brown.
