Stephen Bowen Agrees to Restructure Deal, Saves Redskins $1.9 Million

Reports circled last week that defensive end Stephen Bowen had restructured his contract with the Washington Redskins although no information was known about the deal at that point. A quick look at the current cap situation as of today at the NFLPA website shows the Redskins have $4,170,393 in cap space. Bowen was set to count $4 million against the cap this season, but now will count roughly $2.1 million according to a league source. The Redskins will save roughly $1.9 million in salary cap room by restructuring the deal. Bowen agreed to lower his base salary from $4 million to $1.6 million. Playing time incentives could help Bowen earn some of that money back, $1.45 million to be exact and per-game roster bonuses totaling $750,000. Which basically means if he plays he will earn more. Bowen continues to rehab his knee following off-season surgery. It’s unknown when he will ready, but Jay Gruden has hinted at a week one return, it all depends on how far along he his in a few weeks.
