Around the NFC East: Draft Grades

1111111nfc 150x150 Around the NFC East: Draft Grades

Each of the four NFC East teams had needs heading into the 2013 NFL Draft.

Now that all the picks are in, let’s take a look at how each team did.

nfl redskins Around the NFC East: Draft GradesWASHINGTON REDSKINS: The Redskins were without a first round selection this year due to the trade with the St. Louis Rams last year that brought Robert Griffin III to the nation’s capitol. Even without a first-rounder, the Redskins managed to make the right choices in an effort to fix the  league’s 30th-ranked pass defense from  last season, with second-round cornerback David Amerson, fourth-round safety Phillip Thomas and sixth-round safety Baccari Rambo. Third-rounder Jordan Reed is a tight end prospect with a great deal of upside who can line up all over the field. Fifth-round picks Brandon Jenkins and Chris Thompson could both prove to be value picks if they can bounce back form injury. Thompson fits Mike Shanahan’s zone scheme and Brandon Jenkins could prove to be a decent edge rusher. Grade: B+

Rd. Pos. Player College
2 (51st pick)  CB  David Amerson N.C. State
3 (85)  TE  Jordan Reed  Florida
 4 (119)  S  Phillip Thomas  Fresno State
5 (154)  RB  Chris Thompson  Florida State
5 (162)  LB  Brandon Jenkins  Florida State
 6 (191)  S  Baccari Rambo  Georgia
7 (228)  RB  Jawan Jamison  Rutgers

nfl cowboys Around the NFC East: Draft GradesDALLAS COWBOYS: The Cowboys found themselves in a dilemma when it was time to draft in the first round, all of the lineman they were targeting were likely off the board already. What the Cowboys did after that was a head-scratcher, they traded back to 31 in the first and received an extra third round pick as well in exchange for their original pick. Not only did the Cowboys give the defending NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers a chance to move up in the draft, but when they did pick they took Travis Frederick, a lineman many had projected in the second or third round. The Cowboys did bounce back with picks in the second and third rounds, taking Gavin Escobar and Terrance Williams. Although the Williams pick is somewhat questionable since wide receiver shouldn’t have been a need that high in the draft for Dallas.  Grade: D+

Rd. Pos. Player College
 1 (31)  C  Travis Frederick  Wisconsin
2 (47)  TE  Gavin Escobar  San Diego State
3 (74) WR Terrance Williams  Baylor
 3 (80) DB J.J. Wilcox  Georgia Southern
 4 (114) CB B.W. Webb William & Mary
5 (151) RB Joseph Randle Oklahoma State
6 (185)  LB  DeVonte Holloman  South Carolina

nfl giants Around the NFC East: Draft GradesNEW YORK GIANTS: The Giants entered the 2013 NFL Draft looking to improve their offensive line. Many have questioned the Giants decision to draft Justin Pugh in the mid-first, when you consider the draft’s early run on lineman you realize that the talent pool was drained, although it was still a reach. Second-round pick Johnathan Hankins will likely fit the Giants scheme and be a decent two-down run stopper. Third-round defensive end Damontre Moore was a particularly good value. Even though the Giants have zero need at quarterback, you’re only as good as your backup in the NFL and to be honest, they weren’t that good there and Ryan Nassib was worth a fourth-rounder. Grade: C

Rd. Pos. Player College
 1 (19)  T  Justin Pugh Syracuse
2 (49) DT Johnathan Hankins Ohio State
 3 (81) DE Damontre Moore Texas A&M
4 (110) QB Ryan Nassib Syracuse
5 (152) DB Cooper Taylor Richmond
 7 (225) G Eric Herman Ohio
7 (253) RB Michael Cox Massachusetts

nfl eagles Around the NFC East: Draft GradesPHILADELPHIA EAGLES: New coach Chip Kelly was looking for building blocks for his new offense and he should get immediate help with first-round offensive tackle Lane Johnson and second-round tight end Zach Ertz. The athleticism of Johnson, a high school quarterback, will make him a prime candidate for Kelly’s up-tempo offense and possible zone-read/read-option scheme. The trade to move up and get Matt Barkley was questionable as many draft experts believe Barkley may never be more than a backup quarterback in the NFL, and the Eagles looked to already have competition at that position. Earl Wolff is an intriguing pick in the fifth-round, he has good speed (4.4 at the combine) and athletic ability (39 inch vertical) but is a bit small. Wolff could work his way into the lineup before the year is finished. Grade: B+

Rd. Pos. Player College
 1 (4) T Lane Johnson Oklahoma
2 (35) TE Zach Ertz Stanford
3 (67) DT Bennie Logan LSU
4 (98) QB Matt Barkley Southern Cal
 5 (136) FS Earl Wolff N.C State
7 (212) DE Joe Kruger Utah
7 (218) CB Jordan Poyer Oregon State
9 (239) DB David King Oklahoma

Redskins win 6th Game in a Row….WE WANT DALLAS!!!

london Redskins win 6th Game in a Row....WE WANT DALLAS!!!
The Washington Redskins held on Sunday to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-20 and improve to 9-6 on the year. The game ended on a forward pass that Nick Foles could not get back to the line of scrimmage, which resulted in a ten second runoff for illegal procedure. Being as there was only one second remaining  the game ended.

The Redskins, lead by Ryan Kerrigan’s two sacks and fumble recovery, are the hottest team in the NFC right now. Rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III looked good in his first outing since injuring his right knee against Baltimore two weeks ago. Griffin was 16-24 for 198 yards and two touchdowns. Griffin threw his 5th interception on the year on a tip pass late in the game.

Alfred Morris rushed twenty-one times for 91 yards and also scored his 10th touchdown of the year, which tied him for the Redskins rookie record with Charlie Taylor. Pierre Garcon had 7 catches for 89 yards and Josh Morgan and Santana Moss both scored touchdowns for the Redskins.

With the win, the Redskins have won 6 games in a row and now will face the Dallas Cowboys next week at home, a game with extreme playoff implications. The game will be played on Sunday Night Football (NBC) with the kickoff time being 8:20.

The Redskins will be playing for their first NFC East title since 1999.

Redskins Beat Eagles 31-6, Still Alive in the NFC East

rg3heavens Redskins Beat Eagles 31 6, Still Alive in the NFC EastThe Washington Redskins thumped the Philadelphia Eagles 31-6, to end a three-game losing streak for the Redskins and the 25 point margin of victory was the largest since Mike Shanahan became the coach.

Robert Griffin III was 14-15 for 200 yards, 4 touchdown passes and a perfect passer rating to go along with 12 rushes for 84 yards. RG3′s perfect passer rating is only the second time in NFL history that a rookie quarterback accomplished that feat.

Brandon Meriweather had a huge impact on the game before leaving the game after tweaking his knee, he had 7 tackles and an interception.

The Redskins, who beat a rookie quarterback for the first time in nine games, next go to Dallas on Thanksgiving for a critical division game. Washington is still very much in the hunt for the NFC East with 4 games remaining on the schedule with East opponents who, for the most part, have been struggling as of late.

Saturday Slop: Barring a Setback, Garçon Will Play; Morris Rewriting Record Books, Expectations

hogs haven daily slop gfx medium Saturday Slop: Barring a Setback, Garçon Will Play; Morris Rewriting Record Books, Expectations

Barring a setback, Garçon will play Sunday | CSN Washington
Pierre Garçon said if he emerges from Saturday’s walkthrough unscathed, he intends to suit up 24 hours later against the Eagles. It would be the first game action for the Redskins’ top wide out since Oct. 7. “I feel all right,” he said after Friday’s practice at Redskins Park. “I should be good to go on Sunday. I’ll see how I feel [Saturday], and I should be out there giving it all I got [against the Eagles].”

Washington Redskins 5 Keys to the Game: Week 11 | Fanspeak Washington Redskins Blog
1. Run The Football: I know they will be tempted to pass the football on the Eagles and their disappointing passing defense, but it is a mistake to try to rely on the passing game. It looks tempting given that the Eagles pass rush hasn’t been potent, and their safeties have been a huge liability.

Meriweather excited about possibly playing Sunday | CSN Washington
“I would be ecstatic,” he said after practice. “I got guys that have been here working hard, trying to keep the ship to together. And it would be great to be out there with them guys.” Meriweather stopped short of guaranteeing that he’ll line up at strong safety against the Michael Vick-less Eagles. But the 28-year-old acknowledged that he feels as good as he did prior to spraining his knee for the first time in the preseason.

Morris isn’t sweating Eagles’ wide-9 | CSN Washington
“They do pose a threat with the four D linemen, a lot of penetration, a good front four…so with that mindset, I gotta go out there on the fly and adjust, adapt as I always do. You know all the defenses are pretty much different, even if it’s the same scheme, you know the players in that scheme are going to be different so it’s going to be a challenge and I look forward to it.”

Eagles-Redskins Q&A with Kevin Ewoldt from Hogs Haven – Blogging the bEast
I think that people are generally familiar with RG3’s body of work so far this season, but what about Alfred Morris?  RG3 is of course the golden child and the face/future of the franchise, but has Morris actually been more important to the success of the offense, and what makes him so effective? Morris means SO much to this offense. I knew he was something special when one of his first carries of pre-season he trucked Lance Briggs. No one does that to Briggs. With the running options between Morris and Alfred…LBs have to hold. Have to. With RGIII’s accuracy, that leaves holes. Losing Fred Davis has meant so much though. He was the leading Redskins WR in targets.

Redskins Final Thoughts: Week 11 | WashingtonExaminer.com
I do like Alfred Morris to have a good game. The Eagles have not allowed a 100-yard rusher, but let’s not throw confetti and call them a great run-stopping defense. They allow 4.2 yards per carry and a number of backs have had strong games vs. them – six have gained at least 60 yards and in each case they’ve averaged at least 4.4 yards per carry. The reason no back has rushed for more than 100 yards is that only one back, Atlanta’s Michael Turner, has carried more than 19 times against them.

Eagles officially name Foles to start at QB against Redskins
The Philadelphia Eagles named rookie Nick Foles their starter at quarterback for Sunday’s game against theWashington Redskins at FedEx Field. The Eagles ruled quarterback Michael Vick out of Sunday’s game because of the concussion that he suffered during last weekend’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Jammal Brown misses another practice with hip injury
“Same thing as yesterday,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. “Still sore. We’ll evaluate that next week. … The hip was sore – both the left and right side. There was a little bit of a setback. We’ve got another week to get a chance to look at him. Hopefully, he gets better.”
Despite being the 13th running back selected, Morris has started every game this season and is the No. 2 overall rookie for rushing yards, trailing only the Buccaneers’ Doug Martin (862). “We knew Alfred had a chance to be good,” offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan noted recently.  “But if we thought he was as good as he’s been playing, then we probably would have drafted him before the sixth round.

Shanahan Gives Final Word Before Eagles
On tackle Trent Williams’ ankle injury: “I don’t know when it happened to be honest with you. He’s just sore and you could see it on Monday and Wednesday. It’s better right now, so that’s why we have him listed as probable.”

Might not see Michael Vick for a while – NFC East Blog – ESPN
Burkholder, whose work in this particular area helped form the basis for the NFL’s concussion-recovery protocol, used the terms “foggy,” “not very alert,” and “heavy-eyed” to describe Vick and said he’s “not even close” to returning. Rookie Nick Foles will start at quarterback in Vick’s place Sunday against the Washington Redskins, and it sounds as though the Eagles will need Foles to start more than just this one game.

Need to Know: ‘The right way’ needs to start Sunday – Rich Tandler’s Real Redskins
Mike Shanahan has repeatedly said that he is rebuilding the Redskins “the right way” as opposed to doing a quick fix. But at some point, the rebuilding need to bear some fruit in the form of wins. That point has arrived. The Redskins do not need to go on a run and make the playoffs. But they can’t lose to an Eagles team that is in disarray. They need to be competitive in Dallas on Thanksgiving. They can’t let a team like the Browns start feeling better at their expense. The Giants and Ravens at least need to be pushed to the limits by the Redskins.

Why are the Eagles struggling? – Washington Times
“Everybody has great talent. Obviously some have a little bit better than others, and you would think that team the way it’s built would be maybe first or second in the division right not, battling for a position,” Redskins special teams captainLorenzo Alexander said. “It comes down to execution and when you have a lot of turnovers like they have, that can put you on the losing end of the stick a lot of times.”

Washington Redskins vs. Philadelphia Eagles Preview with Grant Paulsen | 4th & Pain with Adam Carriker and Chuck Carroll
It’s amazing what a bye week can do for a team’s fortunes. Adam Carriker recently said of the Washington Redskins season: ‘It ain’t over, folks.’ And how right he is. The week off has done wonders for Washington as the New York Giantsare falling back to the NFC East pack.

Kai Forbath’s kicking shoe is three sizes smaller than his regular shoe
“I go through a little process with it,” he explained. “We have this shoe oven. I think it’s initially made for hockey skates. You put the shoe in the oven for about 10 minutes, take it out, put it on real quick while it’s still burning hot. And I have to jam my foot in and wear it around for about 10 minutes. I do it again the next day. And then I kick in it for about 10 minutes a day for two weeks until it’s finally somewhat comfortable. So it’s about a two week process to break in each shoe.”

HTTR 24-7 – Defensive Dysfunction: How Mike Shanahan Can Fix His Achillies Heel
Bobby Turner is still the running back’s whisperer, a guy who can seemingly coach anybody. Ike Hilliard doesn’t have much of a track record, but considering he lost his best receiver, he’s done a solid job of developing the talent he has to work with. Chris Foerester hasn’t gotten enough credit for developing Trent Williams into an emerging elite talent, and he’s helped shaped Will Montgomery and Chris Chester (two guys who were largely liabilities in 2011) into top performing offensive lineman.

Mike Vick Likely to Miss Sunday’s Game Against the Redskins

ScreenShot2012 11 11at2.55.37PM crop exact Mike Vick Likely to Miss Sundays Game Against the Redskins Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid said Monday that his star quarterback Mike Vick, has a “significant” concussion and is likely to miss Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins. Vick has been somewhat injury prone for the last couple of seasons and it’s widely thought that perhaps this is more of a case of a collection of head injuries that have finally took there toll on the Eagle signal caller.

It’s no secret that the Eagles have a horrible offensive line and have had major issues protecting Vick this season. If in fact Vick cannot play, rookie Nick Foles (a 3rd round draft pick last year) will take over for Philly at quarterback.

Redskins vs Eagles Preview (Week 11)

vickvsrg3 Redskins vs Eagles Preview (Week 11)

This weekend when the Washington Redskins play host to the Philadelphia Eagles, it will mark the 155th time the two teams have squared off. It will also mark the first meeting between Robert Griffin II and Mike Vick, well if he can play that is. Vick suffered a concussion last week in the Cowboys vs Eagles match-up and will have to undergo a series of tests this week to even get cleared to play.

The Redskins come into this game after much needed bye week, they have lost their last three games, the Eagles themselves are in the midst of a five game losing streak and have a veteran coach in Andy Reid who is struggling to hold onto his job at the moment. SportsBetting.ag has the Redskins as a slight 1 and a half point favorite which reflects exactly what it should about this match-up, which should be a close game. It’s no secret that both of these teams have not played well this season even with the improvement of the Redskins offense, they still find themselves in last place.

The Redskins must follow the trend set by pretty much every other team the Eagles have played this year, put pressure on the Eagles week offensive line and contain Vick while putting hits on him as much as possible. There is a chance that Vick will not play in this game, if that happens look for rookie Nick Foles to take over the quarterback position. Foles looked good in preseason, but had a rocky start to his career last weekend against Dallas.

The Redskins defense needs to find a way to step things up in this game and contain not only Vick, but LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson as well. The Eagles have weapons, they just seem to be having issues using them. Almost certainly the Eagles will focus the majority of their attention on Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III. Griffin has the ability to take games over and no one knows mobile quarterbacks better than Andy Reid, although Reid has never faced or coached a player quite like RGIII who can throw like a top tier qb, as well as run like wide receiver.

Brandon Meriweather is expected to make his regular season, Redskins debut. Meriweather may not single handily change things, but at this point the Redskins will take any help he can give to the porous secondary.

With the current state of the NFC East having the Giants (who have lost 2 straight and have a tough schedule left) at 6-4, the Cowboys at 4-5 and the Eagles and Skins at 3-6, no one is out of contention quite yet. Although the losing team from this game can almost certainly start thinking about next year.
